After the regular school year ends, we will enjoy four more weeks of Summer School. Summer School is not only a time for children to learn in a more relaxed, less formal school environment but is also considered a time where students can consolidate and extend their current skills and knowledge, especially in English. This year, our 2015 Summer School Program will commence from Monday, 22 June and conclude on Thursday 16 July. The classes will run daily from 8:45 am until 2:45 pm. Please note that for classes to commence, we will need a minimum number of children in each class. In order to align with our newly adopted, wholeschool IB curriculum, we have revised our Summer School model to exclusively focus on Communicating and Creating with Confidence in English (This includes new course offerings and an IB aligned curricula). Communicate and Create with Confidence in English will provide an inclusive, engaging, language rich learning environment for every student by allowing each student to expand their interpersonal communication skills (BICS) while increasing socialwell being at the same time. AIMS and Objectives of our AJIS Summer School Program 2015 Students will be supported in their inquirybased learning with the following benefits: ● Support phase progression through the language phases ● Authentic confidence in speaking in English ● Reinforce creative reading and writing skills in English ● Community building and social skills in English ● Promote the IB learner profile in English ● Highquality, engaging supplemental resources 3 We welcome all students from AJIS to attend Summer School. As we have revised our Summer School model, the new AJIS program is differentiated for both proficient English speakers and nonproficient (IB grade level ) students through new course offerings, highquality resources, and a comprehensive, corresponding curricula. The entirely new offerings include but are not limited to the following: IB Diploma Program preparation, problem solving (strategies sources from Stanford University), and agenda setting, celebrating diversity, team building, etc. In addition, all courses have been revised. At this time, this IBDP Preparation / leadership course if only offered to Secondary students. As you may know, children in the intensive program, or students who have joined mainstream in term 2 and 3 are required to attend Summer School. Further, their Summer School enrollment fee is part of their regular school year tuition fees. Children may be nominated by their teacher to attend Summer School if the teacher feels that the child will benefit from the consolidation and / or extension that Summer School will provide. Please note that a child who has had 20 unexcused absences is required to attend Summer School to complete course requirements. Please note the following information: Students are not required to wear their uniform, however, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for school and their summer school activities. Students will swim during PE time. Please have swim wear with students. Once classes have been finalised, a schedule of daily activities per grade level will be forwarded to each individual child. Mainstream teachers will work with your child to consolidate what they have learnt during the academic year in a creative and fun filled way. In kinder, there will be a focus on early literacy and numeracy practices throughout our carefully constructed, fun filled thematic activities. There will be water play, arts and crafts, music and movement. In the elementary, the focus will be literacy elements such as fluency, writing styles, comprehension, vocabulary development and grammar and usage. In numeracy, the focus will be on problem solving and computational skills to assist children with their math. In this manner, each class will operate in its own unique way. At this stage, the teachers participating and offering classes are listed below: K2 Ms Teresa Velez This course will offer fun filled and cool activities to K2 children or children who wish to join K2 in the coming school year. The course will keep children busy with a variety of activities that will also support the school curriculum in a more relaxed, learning environment. Children will unleash their creative sides with arts and crafts, music and movement, and cooking experiments. Water play activities will be an essential part of the program, especially when the summer temperature starts soaring high. Children will also learn essential skills needed to prepare them for a smooth transition to the next grade level. For newcomers, this will give them a great opportunity to get used to school and meet new friends. There will be a short and simple culminating program on the last day of summer school, where parents can come and watch the children perform and show what they have learned. K3 Ms Amia Piamonte Summer School lessons will focus on different themes. We will include Language Enrichment Program developing different areas reading, speaking and listening skills through nursery rhymes, games, action songs, (music and movement) and story play. Numeracy will also be focused on solving simple story problems involving addition and subtraction.The students will also enjoy water play activities on the start of hot summer days. K4 Mr Duncan Harris An inquiry based unit on insects and creepy crawlies. The class will be studying Language Arts to get ready for Grade 1 via our Daily 5 programme as well as reviewing the year in maths. We will also be having water play on sunny days! 9 G1 EAL Ms Harsha Daryanani Our theme for Summer School this year will be Animal & Plant Adaptations. We will work on the concept of causation as we discover how and why plants and animals adapt. We will also consider our responsibilities as global citizens to protect the habitats. We will have a fun filled four weeks as we read books, watch video presentations and spend time outdoors observing plants and animals. We will also work on reviewing our Grade 1 math concepts. G1 & 2 Mr James Lara Using an “Ocean Ecosystem” theme, students will learn essential English Language Arts skills through a variety of activities such as: 1.) Read fiction and nonfiction ocean theme books; 2.) Engage in ocean ecosystem theme spelling, vocabulary exercises and games, and do integrated Math activities; 3.) Write an oceans themed story describing two or more events, include some details about what happened, and use sentence order, verb tense, and words to put the events in order; 4.) Practice basic keyboarding/typing exercises, and try to type a few examples of vocabulary words learned; 5.) Perform an oceans themed reader’s theater script and a final group singing of an oceans song as the culminating activity to be presented to the parents at the end of the course. G2 /3 Ms Bel Buguis Continue to enhance students' skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing through the use of nonfiction texts, poetry and educational games. G3 & 4 Ms Emie Lara Grade 4 Literacy Program focusing on: 1.) Reading Comprehension 2.) Language Grammar & Usage 3.) Vocabulary Development 4.) Numeracy focusing on Computational Application G5 Mr Bob Meyer We will review the skills taught in grade five and teach some skills that will help them make an easier transition to grade six. We will do this through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. MI Mr Ken Remaly In Summer School, the class of Middle Intensive students will continue to develop their reading and communication skills. For their main activity, they will work together to produce a movie adaptation of a famous book. The students will fill all the moviemaking roles, including script writing, camera operation, actors and producers. 10 Music Mr Nobuhito Koike K2/K3 With the line of "How we express ourselves", Students will learn various instruments and fancy movements according to the songs. They also learn how to dramatize the story that is written for the songs. K4/Gr.1 Students will enrich the music activity especially for the note writing with the line of " How we organize ourselves". The goal within four weeks is to compose more than one simple song and perform to the audience. Gr.2/Gr.3 Students will learn Orff Instruments in groups. This course will be mostly students centered activity. Students will be able to show from "How to take care of the instruments" to How to organize the team performance" within four weeks. Gr.4/5 Students need to chose one story to make BackGrand Music. They will explore various kind of Percussive instruments to make BGM to the story. Students will show deep understanding of the story that they chose with the music. PE and/or Swimming Mr Michael Stewart & Mr Jason Faulkner Students will participate in swimming activities and other physical activities (outdoor games). Swimming sessions will focus on water safety, skill instruction for freestyle, and organized games such as water polo. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in swimming races at the end of the summer program. Students should be prepared for swimming sessions with swimwear including cap and goggles with name on. Students should also bring regular PE gear (appropriate athletic clothing) to school for outdoor games. Japanese JSL and/or Kokugo Ms Miki Tanabe and Mr Atsushi Taguchi 3 Kinder classes Miki Tanabe has been teaching all three kindergarten classes as regular classes during summer school. Grade 1 and up JSL/Kokugo Students will review and improve their grade level Kokugo skills in reading comprehension, writing (composition), kanji, and oral communication. Students will also experience many fun activities such as, playing Kanji Karuta, reading Japanese Folktale, and other cultural games and activities, such as Origami, Shodo. MYP and DP Program The Secondary classes will develop a program that fits the needs of each student. Courses will focus on Language Arts in the areas of both communicative and academic English, expressing thoughts and opinions in both written and spoken forms. Students will have the opportunity to participate in specialized subjects in math and other subjects. Also this year, the DP preparation course will be opened. Grade 6, 7, & 8 Mr Horace Gaco ( Math ) Grade 6 & 7 Easy way in learning Algebra 1 concepts. Week 2: Term Exams / reflections Week 3: They will start working on short skits in small groups Week 4: They will practice their skit, make some props, and get ready to show their skit. UI2/3 Mr Borrvs Ferrick Students will have three weeks to create a highinterest, research based project. From the initial brainstorming to the final presentation, they will apply the skills that embody the goals of the MYP Learner Profile in personally relevant ways. At the end of Summer School, they will have produced a tangible trophy of their learning. Interspersed throughout the four weeks will be fun and challenging activities, which will take advantage of the warm weather and the schools many facilities. Grade 9 and up High School Mr John Bullock In order to prepare students for the rigor and pace of the Diploma Program, the summer class will be focusing on metaskills such as speed reading, memorization, notetaking and organization. The classes will not only help students in the DP program, but in life in general. Even students not specifically targeting an IB Diploma will benefit from this program. Japanese JSL and/or Kokugo Ms Miki Tanabe and Mr Atsushi Taguchi Students will review and improve their grade level Kokugo skills in reading comprehension, writing(composition), kanji, and oral communication. Students will also experience many fun activities such as, playing Kanji Karuta, reading Japanese folktale, and other cultural games and activities, such as Origami, Shodo. Music Mr. Nobu Koike MS Students will review the theory of music from the basics in order to compose an age appropriate melody. They will be asked to criticize their composition as well.
