2-13 接続詞 that
（１）名詞節の意味を持たせる that
that を従属(従位)接続詞として、文の前に付けると、その文を『∼であること』の意味
を持つ名詞のような文=名詞節に変えることができる。that を頭に持つ節を特に that 節と
も言う。とても簡単な操作だが、意味や働きは、非常に大きい。
《設例 1》名詞節にするのはとても簡単だ。
【a】 that + I have the book. （私はその本を持っている）
→ that I have the book （私がその本を持っていること）
【b】 that + He can drive a car. （彼は車を運転できる）
→ that he can drive a car

次の文の先頭に従属接続詞 that を付属させて、
『∼なこと』を表す名詞節（ that 節）に
して和訳しなさい。
1.
She can use the computer.

You are learning judo.

That picture is Yumi's.
5.
I know his name

（２）that 節は、文の「中」に文を入れる形を取る
「∼であること」の文全体を、別の文の目的語として使い「∼であることを…する」の
しゅせつ
じゅうぞくせつ
しゅせつ
意味を表す。この時「…する」を主節、
「∼であること」は従属節という。さらには主節と
じゅうぞくせつ
ふくぶん
従属節を持つ文を、複文というから覚えておこう。
そして、これは英語独特の形をしいている。
《設例 2》次の複文で、日本語から『主節』と『従属節』を見分けなさい。また以下の文
が英語になった文をよく観察しなさい。
◇that 節全体が目的語 O になる。文の、主語 S・述語 V・目的語 O を示す。
【a】私は彼女がそれを知っていると思う。
→
I think that she knows it.

主節は「私は…と思う」、従属節は「彼女はそれを知っている」が正しい。また、図式化すると、上のよ
うになる。目的語は that she knows it まで全部だ、と気が付けるようになろう。
【b】彼女は明日は晴れだといいなと思っている。

that 節全体が think（∼を思う）
・hope （∼を希望する／だといいなと思う）
・know（∼を知っている）
・believe
（∼を信じている）・などの他動詞の目的語になっている名詞節だ、と判別できるようになろう。

［基本 2］
主節と従属節を見分けて、和訳しなさい。
1.

She hopes that she can go to America some day.

（３）従属接続詞 that は、目的語であることを表している場合に限って、省略。
that はその後にある節が文全体の目的語になっているときは、省略されることが多い。
主節の本動詞の後ろに、また主語の形の語が来るのは、奇妙だし、逆に英語が分かる人（あ
るいは分かってきた人）には『続けて目的語になっている名詞節が来るな』と予想・判断する
からだ。
《設例 3》that 節が目的語の場合に限って、that は省略できる。
◇that があると思って和訳しなさい。
【a】 I know (that) he learns judo.

【b】 Do you remember (that) today is my father’s birthday?
【c】 He doesn’t know ( that) the car is mine.

例にならって２つの文を従属接続詞 that を使わないで１つの文にして和訳しなさい。
《例》 He will be a good player.
