Koko was among the five seniors who were honored this year. The honorees were introduced during the Brunch and also at a ceremony immediately before the introduction of the Cherry Blossom Queen and her Court in the Peace Plaza. Annual Cleanup Satsuki Bonsai Show Potluck & Raffle Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Bonsai Show Holiday Faire & Bake Sale Senior Holiday Luncheon • NEWS Donations to the SMJACC The Center is always grateful to the community for all of the donations that we receive. The latest campaign is to replace the cushions and their covers that are used with the folding chairs in the Gardeners’ Hall. Ikuko Sakai donated the material, and she and Keiko Kurosawa sewed new cushion covers. The next time you come to an event at the Gardeners’ Hall, remember who made sitting more comfortable. • Holiday Fair and Bake Sale We will be holding the annual Sale this year on Saturday, November 14, 2015. If you have gently used goods, especially Japanese items, that you no longer need, please consider donating them for our sale. Thank you. • Tombo Kayo Club Photograph courtesy of Koko Orio and Anna Sawamura • San Mateo Public Library The San Mateo Public Library will be holding various events in May in conjunction with Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at the Main Library at 55 West 3rd Avenue. The Toyonaka Friendship Festival of performing arts will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 2:00 pm. Other events include an Origami and Calligraphy event for children on Saturday, May 23rd from 11:00 am, and a Young People’s Concert on Sunday, May 31st from 2:00 pm. Contact the San Mateo Public Library for more information about these and other events at 650-522-7818 or go to their website at www.smplibrary.org . The Tombo Kayo Club meets regularly in the Gardeners’ Hall on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month from 6:00 pm. The Club started in 2009 and has a performance every other year, and their next one will be in 2016. Members of the Club also perform in other events, e.g. in the Kayo Parade at the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival. If you are interested in joining the Tombo Kayo Club, please contact Mr. Takaishi at 650-303-3539 or Mr. Nakamura at 650-888-5275. • Operation Recognition The San Mateo County Office of Education’s Operation Recognition presents diplomas to those whose high school education was interrupted due to wartime circumstances. Current residents in San Mateo County may qualify if they served in the U.S. Armed Forces in World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War with an honorable discharge OR were interned in a Japanese-American relocation camp during World War II.
