Within a Japanese context, what, specifically, does globalization mean? Based on an understanding of globalization in a Japanese context, I will discuss practical goals for English language education in Japan. By introducing certain questions, I will actively challenge participants to critique these goals and to come up with their own. Questions I will ask include: What “English” should language educators and students aim for? Is it necessary to acquire native-like English? In today’s world, who is a native speaker, and does it matter? How does mastering English influence one’s own cultural and linguistic identities? How should educators and learners attend to issues of L1 and L2 cultures? How does research address these, and other related, questions? Finally, how should language educators teach and position English? To what extent is Japan’s position in the world affected by how we answer these questions? グローバリゼーションとは何か、なぜ日本の英語教育に直接的な影響を与えているか。日本におけるグローバリゼーションを理解した上で、日本の英語教育が目指す目標を語る。参加者は、グローバリゼーションの影響による英語教育の目標についてクリティカルに考え、自身の教育目標にたどりつくように導く。どのような英語を目指すのか。英語母語話者のような英語を目指す必要があるのか。英語母語話者とは誰のことをいい、そのようなこだわりは大切であるのか。英語習得は、自身の文化・言語アイデンティティにどのような影響をあたえるのか。教育者や学習者は第Ⅰ言語や第２言語文化の問題に注目すべきか。教育者は英語をどのように教え、どのように考えるべきなのか。以上の質問の答えをどのように出すかにより、世界における日本の立ち位置が影響を受けるのか考える。講演者経歴 Short Biography of the Lecturer Albert Lehner is Director of the Language Center at the University of Fukui, where he is a professor and Director of the Language Development Center, a state-of-the-art self-access center. He received Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Formerly, he directed three other university English programs in Japan and one in the U.S. These include: Akita International University, Temple University Japan, Huron International University Tokyo, and The Franklin Institute of Boston (U.S.A.). He served as a professor and also director of the Graduate Program in ELT at Akita International University (Japan) as well as full-time English language instructor at Sophia University (Japan). Al has conducted numerous workshops for high school English teachers across Japan for 10 years and published independently as well as jointly with Ryuko Kubota, Peter Elbow, and Eleanor Kutz. 福井大学教授および語学センター長。専門は英語教授法および応用言語学。英語教育で名の高いハワイ大学で哲学博士（応用言語学）取得。福井大学赴任以前は、日本の３校の大学（秋田教養大学、テンプル大学日本校、ヒューロン国際大学日本校）および米国の Franklin Institute of Boston の計４校において英語プログラムのディレクター。上智大学で専任英語講師、秋田情報大学において、英語教育大学院の教授および大学院統括。１０年間日本国内の高校教員にワークショップを行い、単著および著名な研究者である、Ryoko Kubota、Peter Elbow、Eleanor Kutz と共著がある。連絡先 Contact：外国語学部英語スキル委員会椿まゆみ Mayumi Tsubaki [email protected]
