OSAKA--Police arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the slayings of two
schoolchildren missing for more than a week who had reportedly planned to go to
Kyoto together.
The girl's horrific end has dominated news coverage in Japan for several days. The
body of a boy was discovered on Aug. 21 before police arrested Koji Yamada, 45, on
suspicion of abandoning the body of 13-year-old girl Natsumi Hirata. This is usually a
prelude to more serious charges after intensive questioning.
Hirata's body was found dumped in a parking lot of a trucking company in Takatsuki
in Osaka Prefecture on Aug. 13. Her face was almost completely covered with duct tape
and she had multiple cuts to her body. Police determined that she died of suffocation.
Meanwhile, authorities said the body of another victim, 12-year-old Ryoto Hoshino,
was found after investigators tracked the suspect’s car and searched a mountainous area
elsewhere in the prefecture to which he had driven earlier Friday.
