Myers, University of Michigan, USA Dear Colleagues, Interstitial lung diseases, and in particular idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), are attracting increasing attention with the advent of new antifibrotic medications. The correct diagnosis is of utmost importance. Multidisciplinary discussion between clinicians, radiologists and pathologists is firmly established as the diagnostic gold standard for IPF. According to international guidelines, in order to render the diagnosis IPF in the setting of a typical picture of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), all other known causes have to be excluded. In case the radiological picture is unclear, Histopathology is diagnostic. But what is the UIP pattern? Which differential diagnoses have to be thought of? What are the specific pathological criteria for UIP, and how sure can you be? We want to invite you to our interdisciplinary Mini-Symposium to shed light on those up-to-date, interesting and important questions. Invited by our Lung pathology group, Prof. Jeffrey L. Myers, University of Michigan, USA, an internationally renowned pathologist, expert on interstitial lung diseases and co-author of consensus-classifications on the topic will present his view. His special lecture will be complemented by talks by our local experts on the clinical and radiological perspective.
