「駅の方へ」の日本語につられて to the direction としないこと。in the direction of ∼
で「∼の方向へ」という意味になる。
答 John is walking (in) the direction of the station.
訳ジョンは駅の方向へ歩いている。
その事実は，科学の観点からすれば，非常に重大です。

「科学の観点から」は，すぐ from the viewpoint of science となる。ここでのポイン
トは＜of＋抽象名詞＞＝形容詞である。「非常に重大だ」は very important と書ける
が，これを of importance を用いて表現している。very は副詞で形容詞の important
にかかっているが，importance と名詞になると very では修飾できなくなる。名詞の
修飾には形容詞を用いよう。ここでは great が用いられている。

Driving is a lot of fun.の a lot of も fun が名詞のため very を用いることができない
ので，形容詞句の a lot of を用いている。
答 The fact [is of great importance from the viewpoint] of science.
残念ですが，10 人もの人が病気ですので，今夕の会は中止にするしかないですね。
Unfortunately, [ in / less / no / people / sick / than / ten / with ] bed, we’ll have to
cancel the meeting this evening.

挿入部分を完成させるわけである。「10 人もの人が病気ですので」の部分は分詞構文
を使いたいが∼ing が見あたらない。代わりに with があるので付帯状況を表す表現が
作れそうである。sick があるので＜with＋目的語＋sick＞の形を作る。「10 人もの人
が」は no less than ten people でいいだろう。sick in bed は「病気で寝ている」とい
うこと。付帯状況を作る with の用法は大切なのでしっかり学習しておこう。＜ with
＋目的語＋形容詞・副詞・前置詞(句)・分詞＞と目的語のあとにはいろいろな品詞が
くる。
答 Unfortunately, [with no less than ten people sick in] bed, we’ll have to cancel
the meeting this evening.
その湖の美しさはとても言葉では言い表せなかった。【並べかえ，１語不足】（中央大）
[ the lake / description / beautiful / was ].
description は describe「描写する」の名詞形で，「描写，記述」。「言葉では言い表せ
ない」は「言葉を越えている」ということで beyond が不足している。 beyond
description で「言葉では言い表せないほど」の意味である。
