Communication
When I was in college, I majored in Communications. I was interested in the way people communicate
with each other. Did you know that you are communicating even if you don’t speak? Body language, eye
contact, and even clothing can send a message. You will be communicating a lot with your classmates to
prepare for the school festival. So let’s talk about communication!

Tips for Good Communication
Good communication is the most important skill you can learn. It will improve your relationships,
school life, career and self-esteem. So here are some tips to help you have good communication:
1. Body Language
Smile, make eye-contact and face your partner.

2. No Distractions
Turn your head and torso towards the speaker and lean forward. Avoid looking at your phone or

the clock.
3. Ask Questions and Listen

Ask questions. Show you are interested in what your partner is saying.

Listen carefully to your partner and repeat the last thing they said.
4. Be Prepared for Small Talk

Small talk, for example: the weather, sports, and recent events are good topics for conversation.

Here is a word to help you remember good topics for small talk: “FORD”.

Have you ever made a call to your friend’s home phone number? When I was an elementary and
junior high school student, my friends and I didn’t have cell phones. So, if I wanted to talk to my
friend, I had to call her home phone number. In that case, I would have to talk to whoever answered
the phone. For example:
Erika’s mother : Hello.
Me : (Oh, not Erika…) Hello. I’m sorry for calling so late at night.
This is Nanami Numakura. May I speak to Erika, please?
Erika’s mother : Hi, Nanami. I’ll get her. Hold on, please.
Me : Thank you.
Most of you don’t have to do that because cell phones are popular now. You can communicate with
your friends directly at anytime and anywhere. I was so nervous when I called her home phone
number, but I think it was the first step in learning how to communicate with older people. Cell
phones are convenient and useful for us, but we miss an opportunity to communicate directly with
older people. Please think about the merits and demerits of using your cell phone.

~英語表現Ⅰ(2年選択)~
のぞき見!
「英語表現Ⅰ」は2年次生の選択科目で、週2時間の授業です。先日、
“Shopping Activity”を行いま
した。カリン先生が持ってきた様々な種類の服をお店のようにハンガーにかけ、clerk(店員)と customer
(客)になり、買い物表現を学びました。
“Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for a ~.”
Cash, please.
