As the second term is in the middle of the school year, it is time for many schools to organize events such as field days and campus festivals. The 1st of September is the Disaster Prevention Day. In the hope that a devastating disaster like the Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1,1923, will not be repeated, earthquake and fire drills are practiced at schools, local communities, municipal offices, and private companies, all over Japan. September is also the month for typhoons. When a typhoon hits an area, trees crash to the ground, crops are ruined, and rivers and canals are flooded. When a big typhoon is coming close to Japan, the television and radio will broadcast minute-by-minute information about its possible course, wind velocity and amount of rainfalls foreseen. And all the radio stations broadcast around the clock on the typhoon. During the first half of September, when the Pacific Ocean high pressure system prevails, the late summer heat will be expected. After mid-month, the temperature drops in the mornings and evenings, and a sense of autumn is in the air. We enjoy the chirping, or rather pleasant music of crickets and other insects through the long autumn nights.
