Cadre organisationnel
The Capacity Development Office (CDO) of the United Nations Department for Economic
and Social Affairs (DESA) is recruiting an intern to assist with the management of a large
development aid programme. The Development Account (un.org/esa/devaccount/) is a
capacity development programme of the United Nations Secretariat aimed at enhancing
capacities of developing countries in the areas of economic and social affairs. It has an annual
budget of around $20 million, funding projects implemented by 10 entities of the UN
Secretariat (DESA, the five UN Regional Commissions, UNCTAD, UNEP, UN-Habitat and
UNODC). The programme was originally established in 1997 and since then 300 projects
have or are being implemented for a total budget of $186 million. The CDO is seeking highly
motivated graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in development
cooperation work within an international organization in order to supplement their studies.
This internship is a practical educational experience and will provide interns the opportunity
to work in a multicultural, intergovernmental organization. Under supervision, interns are
assigned projects and tasks that are relevant to their educational background and interests and
provide them with the opportunity to apply and further develop their theoretical knowledge. •
The duration of the internship is for a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 6 months,
pending on the needs of the department • The internship is UNPAID and full-time.• Interns
work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department
or office to which they are assigned.• Travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas), and
living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution. •

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any position in the professional or
above categories, within the UN Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of
their internship. Any employment with the UN at that point in time shall be subject to
established recruitment and selection procedures.
Responsabilités
Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Reviewing project documents using the logical
framework approach and programming and evaluation guidelines; • Participating in review
group meetings and follow-up actions; • Summarizing and evaluating progress reports of
ongoing projects; • Supporting the update the of the Development Account website by
providing substantive content; • Updating the internal electronic document management
system; • Conducting ad-hoc document and internet research; • Compiling statistics and
analysis of specific aspects of programmes; and • Other responsibilities as required.

ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural

The intern is expected to: Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United
Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and have a
demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds
and beliefs.
Formation
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met: • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be
enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum
Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined
above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
• Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Expérience professionnelle
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
However, applicants are encouraged to list all relevant work experiences in their
personal history profile.
Connaissances linguistiques
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the
advertised internship, fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of French is
desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian
and Spanish) is an advantage.
