Unfortunately, pro-democracy (1)campaigners in the West have too often (2)failed to understand the
problem. By (3)encouraging young people in repressive regimes to blog and use social networks to enjoy
freedom of (a)expression and challenge their governments, commentators and politicians have put these
people’s lives in danger. Such public encouragement has also (4)highlighted the importance of the Internet to
these governments, . . . .
Commentators have also failed to understand the extent to which (5)censorship can be customized under
repressive regimes. They (b)mistakenly assume that such governments are faced with a “(A)独裁者’s
(c)dilemma.” In this dilemma, any dictator who wants to introduce modern internet and communications (B)
技術 (t-) must also accept the introduction of free speech and (C)民主主義. . . . They can quickly find
which sites should be blocked, and which users’ internet access should be (d)circumscribed. While this goes
on, the population in general can enjoy the Internet as freely as anyone on the planet.
Morozov’s arguments have been greeted with mixed (D)賞賛. While reviewers have generally accepted
his arguments of the dangers of the Internet, they have often seen him as too (e)pessimistic. The rise of the
Internet is inevitable; they wonder if he is similar to those who first opposed mass print journalism, or radio,
or television. Morozov argues that he is not – he would simply like us to be more (E)〜に気付いている of
how the Internet has created threats to our freedom.
