In a recent case involving an individual claiming to belong to the long lost Turkish Brotherhood, a deceitful person has been luring our Brothers in order to gain legitimacy by using a bogus BOC emblem. To my knowledge there is no Turkish Brotherhood and no Turkish Brothers in existence today. Moreover, the Turkish Table has been officially withdrawn from the Directory by the Assembly of national Captains at the last World Zaf in France (2014). I'm not interested in dictating who our Brothers befriend or what group they join. I am merely recommending that before accepting a friend request from an apparent Brother you make sure the individual befriending you is in fact a Brother. May I take this opportunity to remind you not to use our email address, Facebook or any other Brotherhood link, to send religious, political or other comments or information not related to our fraternity. Sailing the Atlantic in January is one of those times. So what about doing it by ocean liner? Well, some things are much the same as when sailing ......., Another snag is, you cannot chose who will be sitting at your dinner table. Your cabin is relatively spacious and is equipped with telephones and things. On balance, crossing a wild Bay of Biscay in an ocean liner is more comfortable than in a small sailing boat, but mooring Another disappointment is the fact that corporate schedules dictate that it is necessary to flit from one Caribbean Island to the next in quick succession, leaving only enough time ashore to buy a postcard and see yet another volcano. The food, however is very good and undoubtedly this is a very civilised way to cross the Atlantic. but other things are very different, - like a very powerful heads flush! is trickier, and I guess, rather more pricey. Instead of friendly yottie with whom you can have a drink and a yarn, you are more likely to find yourself sharing a jetty with another equally grotesque floating apartment block. Somehow I wish I had been smart enough to sail it properly, when my body was young enough to be able to keep such an appointment. By the way I shall not be wearing red stars on my tricorn! Frère Boz The TORtuga Post 5 NORWAY In Defense of Our Norwegian Brothers Brothers, I attended the 2014 International Captains’ Meeting in France as a Second to the then US Captain, Charles Hankins. During the meeting, there was discussion of placing the Norwegian Table on probation due to inactivity. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Norwegian Table was allowed to remain as a Group A Table but with a warning to basically shape up their Brotherhood activity. While not denying the wisdom of that decision, I do want share with my international brothers my experience with those Viking brothers. I have known many of these brothers for over ten years. They are officers on the tall ship STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL and they frequently dock in my city, Norfolk, VA. We have had many good evenings together and they have quartered on my boat and in my home on occasion. They have also welcomed many of our brothers and their first mates aboard the STATSRAAD for a grand reception every year they have been here in port. I have found them to be excellent brothers. They lead a wonderful yet arduous life sailing the oceans and training cadets for the Norwegian Navy. Their schedule at sea prohibits them from having the normal monthly boucans with their shore side brothers but they still are a viable table with ten brothers. The STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL was in Norfolk this past November. I spoke with Brother Marc Seidl about the possible probation of his table which he was not aware. I asked him to write me about his table and its activity with the Brotherhood. Below is his response to me that I would like for all of the Brotherhood to see. Orza! F. Scott Ripley US National Captain Orza Scott, Let me start by saying how wonderful it was for us Norwegian Brothers to get together with the Chesapeake Brotherhood once again, in keeping with the good tradition we have had over so many years now. I am writing in reference to the information you shared with me concerning discussions about the Norwegian Table at the International Captain’s meeting in France this year, where it had obviously been debated whether or not our Table should be put on probation. I was very surprised to learn this, since we consider ourselves a very enthusiastic group of Brothers that regularly travel the world and meet other Brothers in the true spirit of what Brotherhoods should do. We are a small Brotherhood and unfortunately none of us had the opportunity this year to represent our Table in France, which I understand was a tremendous success. We actually did consider the possibility at one point, but were informed that there were no more places available, although we did learn that were some more added later. We did however manage to have 3 interactions with Brothers in the US this year, in Savannah, Annapolis and in Norfolk, and have been doing so every year since 2002, when we come to the US with the STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL, and almost half of our Brotherhood members. It is always great to have the US Brothers at both of our big receptions and to be received by them at their homes. So, we do not understand why we should be put on probation, we feel that we are trying to be good Brotherhood representatives whenever the possibility arises. We have always informed all Brothers considering travel to Norway to inform us, so that we can host them. Also we still have ambitions to gather Brothers from all over the world to come and sail with us on one of our open sailing voyages – I will be posting our schedule when I arrive at home from sea. In the meantime it can be found on our website at www.lehmkuhl.no I guess that the most important thing we may have to do to in the future is to inform more about our activities, so that more of our Brothers understand what the Norwegian Brotherhood is about. In the meantime, I hope you are willing to be an advocate that can inform the International Captain’s Committee of our Table’s status as you know it. We had a good over winterage with Boucans in Upperlands ( the Nothern Table ), Dun Laoire ( the Eastern Table ),and Galway ( a joint Western and South-Eastern Tables ). The plan for this year is to have a Boucan on Clare Island on May 15 and 16, a Zaff in Castletownbearhaven in Bantry Bay on the weekend of July 25 , and a Boucan on Inish Bofin , Co. En su momento más álgido, llegó a constar de 76 Hermanos y ha participado a varios zafarranchos internacionales en Belgica, Chile, Italia, Caribe, etc. Igualmente hemos celebrado una infinidad de zafarranchos nacionales aun cuando, por las características de nuestros integrantes, hemos siempre dado preferencia a la navegación más que a las reuniones protocolares. Aun cuando 76 individuos pueden parecer pocos en relación con otras Hermandades mundiales, 5 de ellos le han dado la vuelta al mundo en sus embarcaciones, 6 han circunnavegado Sur America por Cabo de Hornos, 10 han cruzado el Atlantico, 25 han navegado a lo largo y ancho del Caribe y gran parte de los restantes han surcado constantemente rutas marinas de menor significación fuera de los litorales nacionales, interpretando de esa forma, navegando, el espíritu del Octálogo que nos rige. Desgraciadamente, el “tiempo” responsable de la muerte de 18 hermanos, así como imprevistos y lamentables acontecimientos políticos y sociales (actualmente bien conocidos en el mundo), han golpeado duramente a nuestro País y a nuestra Cofradía. El tremendo deslave del litoral Guaireño del año 2000 y EL DETERIORO DE LA SEGURIDAD tanto marítima como terrestre durante la mayor parte de esta última década, han mermado nuestra participación formal a grandes zafarranchos e impulsado el éxodo de muchos de nuestros integrantes a buscar residencia provisoria en litorales de otros países. Sin embargo, eso no ha influido en la unidad de sus integrantes, mancomunados alrededor del Octálogo y del espíritu fraternal y participativo, característico de nuestra Hermandad. Aun separados y con muchos hermanos esparcidos por el mundo, junto con el nombramiento de nuevos dignatarios, nos hemos trazado el plan de reclutar e incorporar nuevos jóvenes aspirantes y normalizar nuestra situación para fines del presente año, fecha en la que anhelamos poderles proporcionar la información que SECOIN nos pide ahora. Con gran pesar en nuestros corazones comunicamos que el domingo 9 de Febrero, ha zarpado al Mar de la Eternidad nuestro Venerable Hermano El Hermano Vikingo fue un gran Capitán y líder de la nao Concepción, Capitán Nacional en los años 1973 a 1975 y también en los años 1993 al 1995 (dos períodos). En esa segunda singladura fue el mayor artífice del equipo organizador del Zafarrancho Mundial 1994 que se hizo con mucho éxito en Chile. Fue también el primer SECOIN en los años 1994 a 1997. Sus restos mortales fueron velados en la Parroquia San Agustín en Concepción y sus funerales fueron el lunes en el Cementerio General de Concepción después de una misa en la misma Parroquia a las 1130 hrs.
