MARRIAGE IN JAPAN
Explanatory Notice to British Nationals getting married in Japan.
If you are a British National and wish to marry in Japan, the Japanese authorities require you to present a certificate
stating that you are free to marry. The British Embassy in Tokyo and Consulate-General in Osaka can provide this
service.
From 1 March 2015, the Consular Section will issue a new-style affirmation or an affidavit to marry. The local
authorities have confirmed that they will accept this document provided that it is submitted together with a British Birth
Certificate. This replaces the old-style Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) for British nationals marrying in Japan under
local law.
You must prepare an affirmation or affidavit of marital status, following the template on the 2 pages above, before
you attend the Consular Section. An Affidavit is a religious oath, whereas an Affirmation is a non-religious oath. You
can either type in your information using the Word document version or handwrite it using the PDF version.
Please note that if you print the above form (pages 1 and 2) as a double-sided document you will not need to pay for a
notarial service to ‘unite’ the two pages. If you present two sheets that have not been ‘united’ by a consular officer the
Japanese authorities may refuse to accept the document.
You must make an appointment with the Consular Section and attend in person to sign the document before a
consular officer. Please ensure you are allowing enough time for the Japanese authorities to process your
documentation prior to your wedding.
You should bring supporting documents relating to the facts indicated on your affirmation/affidavit. Please refer to
the list below for possible documents.
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
 Original UK passport
 Official ID or document showing your current address (e.g. Residence Card if you live in Japan)
 Original birth certificate which shows your parents’ full names and mother’s maiden name
 Original deed poll (if you have previously changed your name)
 If you are a widow/widower, present original death certificate of deceased spouse, or a certified copy.
 If you have previously been married, present original divorce decree absolute/annulment papers, or a certified
copy.

Please pay fee 4 in Japanese yen, see Japan - Consular Fees for current yen exchange rate
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
 Under the Perjury Act (1911) it is a criminal offence to knowingly make a false declaration. Offenders face the
possibility of a fine and/or a jail sentence.
 You should register your marriage at the local ward or city office once the affirmation/affidavit has been completed.
You must submit your birth certificate along with the affirmation/affidavit. You should check with the local ward or city
office for information about the length of time your documents will take to process, ensuring that you allow enough
time before your proposed wedding date.
 You and your fiancée/fiancé must fulfil all other requirements of the Japanese authorities in preparation for your
wedding.
 An affidavit/affirmation does not make your proposed marriage valid under UK or foreign law, or guarantee to the
local authorities that you are free to marry. You may wish to seek legal advice about the validity of your Japanese
marriage in the United Kingdom. Consular staff are not legally trained; thus, they are unable to comment on this matter.
Please note that procedures for same-sex consular marriages at the British Embassy in Tokyo are different as these
are not conducted under Japanese law. Please refer to the Marriage Tool for further details.
