ヤコービがレッシングを訪問した折、彼から引き出した信念の言葉「ヘン・カイ・パ
ン（一即全）」は当時の知的世界に暴露されてスキャンダルを惹き起こした。レッシング
の言葉は、スピノザの「神あるいは自然」のギリシア語版であり、スピノザの汎神論的
世界観は無神論とも目される当時のタブーだからであった。レッシングの言葉を引き出
すためにヤコービが読ませたゲーテの詩『神的なるもの』はしかし、
「存在の連鎖」とい
う伝統的観念に、当時一般に流布するに至った「世界の複数性」の観念をかけ合わせて
初めてよく理解される。唯一神の無限に多様な現れとしての宇宙には、地球以外にも知
的存在者が住まうのであって、
「存在の連鎖」は知的完成度のスケールにおいて全宇宙を
視野に入れて形成されてある、とレッシングは考える。地球上の人間よりも完成度の高
い理性を備えた、別なる世界の存在者は、神の似姿にそれだけ近いのであって、彼らは
人間にとって形成のお手本であり、また人間が輪廻して後、別なる太陽系の惑星の上で
成る姿である。レッシングは「三位一体」を象徴的に理解し、これを宇宙の形成と人間
の歴史の二相に、つまりは空間的時間的な展開の相のもとに解釈するが、この応用的な
予型論は、複数化した世界である自然全体が、神の似姿として新たなる神性を保持し、
それに人間が与るための、啓蒙主義期の新しい哲学的神学という性格を持っている。
