2014 JAL Scholarship Program Application and Selection of Participants The JAL Scholarship Program was continuously held since 1975 with the aim of enhancing the younger’s understanding of Japan and promoting mutual understanding beyond national borders as well as developing young women and men who will assumed future leadership roles in Asia and Oceania region. We append below the full details of the program for your easy reference. 1. Duration 2 July - 22 July 2014 (21 days) (Please refer to page 8 for the program schedule) 2. Participants One participant from Singapore (Singapore citizen) 3. Main theme Discovery for Enchantment of Japan 4. Language “Japanese” All the lectures and discussions will be prepared and conducted in Japanese. 5. Visiting cities & Action areas: Tokyo City of Kanazawa, City of Hakusan (Both in Ishikawa Prefecture, northwest Japan) 6. Program Outline (1) Opening Seminar & Closing Seminar Both seminars will be held in Tokyo. Participants will acquire and develop comprehensive knowledge and a clear understanding of this program’s theme. In the Closing Seminar, they will conduct a presentation regarding what they learnt throughout the program duration. (2)Field Work Field Work consists of visits to various facilities and historic sites, joint field surveys with Japanese students, and interviews with local people. Participants with have opportunities to visit the actual field site so that they can increase their awareness of Japan. (3)Students Session & Group Discussion Participants will form groups mixed with Japanese students to conduct group discussions and surveys for specific agendas. (4)Asia Forum in Ishikawa” This forum will consist of lectures and a public symposium. Participants will give presentations based on their Field Work, Student Sessions and Group 1 Discussions. (5) Home stays (Tokyo & Ishikawa Prefecture) Participants will deepen their knowledge and understanding of Japanese customs and ways of life by experiencing Japanese lifestyles first-hand. 7. Application and Selection Process etc. (1) Application Criteria Participants must: Possess a Japanese Proficiency Test Level 1 certificate (All the lectures and discussions will be prepared and conducted in Japanese) Be between the age of 20 to 25 years old (inclusive) when the program commences. Be a Singapore citizen is an undergraduate/postgraduate university student in Singapore. Be healthy, of a cheerful disposition, and able to get along well with others. Have an interest in Japan and be willing to experience Japanese culture and customs. (2) Important Reminder Participants must: Maintain self-discipline and be actively involved in the program activities. Bear in mind that this program is a group activity. Straying from the group will not be permitted. Attend all classes, all sessions, and all activities scheduled by the organizer. Take the specified transportations and flights to/from Japan. Changes of flights for personal reasons will not be permitted. Adhere to the deadlines set for report submission (3) Selection Procedure The student selection process of the JAL Scholars Program consists of two stages. The first stage is the submission of an essay, whilst the second stage is an interview. The essay theme for the 1st stage of the selection is “Discovery for Enchantment of Japan”. (4) Costs involved (a) Costs borne by JAL Foundation and Japan Airlines Two-way economy class airfare on Japan Airlines between Tokyo and the airport nearest to the student’s residence served by JAL All transportation in Japan during the official program. This includes domestic air/rail travel to cities outside Tokyo Overseas travelers' accident insurance Insurance in case of sickness, injury or theft (excluding cash, cheques etc.) for the duration of the official scholarship program in Japan. All accommodation, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner for the duration of the official program at lodgings that will be arranged by the JAL Foundation. (b) Costs borne by Participant All expenses, apart from the above-mentioned costs. (5) Submission Format Attached application form to be completed in Japanese. Successful applicants will be invited for an interview on 6th March 2014.
