Isolation
Between 1200 and 1600, there were many civil wars.
In 1600, when the Tokugawa Shogunate came to power, it united Japan once
again. In order to keep unity, the Tokugawa wanted all foreigners to leave Japan.
In 1640, the shogunate expelled all foreigners, outlawed Christianity, and greatly
reduced trade. No Japanese were allowed to leave the country.
This began a period of isolation that lasted for 200 years.
In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States came to Japan.
Perry wanted a trade agreement. He brought four warships and a large force.
This strong military show both impressed and frightened the Japanese.
They gave Perry the trade treaty he wanted. Japan soon signed similar trade
agreements with other Western nations. Isolation had been broken.
Many Japanese were outraged over treaties the shogun made with Westerners.
The samurai in southern Japan began attacking European ships and a full
rebellion began. The Tokugawa family shogun ruled for 200 years until many
Japanese became outraged over treaties. In 1867, the rebels overthrew the
Tokugawa Shogunate.
