VISION AND GOALS
The mission of the alternative learning
center is to encourage and promote
student development of behavioral,
academic, and social skills in order to be a
more productive and educated member of
the family, community, and society.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The ALC is designed to provide continued
educational opportunities for students
who have been involved in serious
disciplinary incidents, or who have been
placed by their parents as a result of an
escalating pattern of academic and
behavioral difficulty. The curriculum,
textbooks, and supplementary materials
used in the ALC meet expectations
defined by the Virginia Standards of
Learning. Every effort is made to provide
continuity with the student’s course load
prior to entry into the ALC, and
individualized instructional plans may
allow for some credit recovery.
Our goal is for all students placed by the
Fairfax County School Board and/or
Hearings Office (or by an IEP team
following a hearing) to meet their
probationary conditions and return to a
traditional school program. Consideration
for re-entry into a traditional school will be
contingent upon each student’s
successful completion of all Fairfax
County School Board, Hearings Office,
and ALC program requirements:
 Improved attendance
 Appropriate behavior
 Focused academic effort
Our goal for each parent-placed student
will be to learn new skills and strategies
that will promote success when the
student returns to his or her base school.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS
AND SUPPORTS
The focus of Positive Behavior
Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to
provide a clear and consistent system of
expected behaviors for the entire school.
Through PBIS, we intend to create and
maintain a productive, safe environment
in which all school members understand
behavioral expectations and why these
behaviors benefit the school community
as a whole. Our behavioral expectations
will focus on three areas: respect,
responsibility, and readiness.
Respect: The ALC provides an
environment of mutual respect. Students
are expected to respect others and most
importantly themselves.
Responsibility: The ALC encourages
students to be responsible for their own
actions, inactions, and words. The ALC
also encourages students to become
active participants in their own education.
The ALC assists students in developing
responsible relationships within their
schools and communities.
Readiness: In order to prepare for the
“real” world, students are expected to be
prepared for their lessons including
having the most important tool—a
positive attitude.
WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT
The ALC provides a weekly report to
parents and students to inform them of
their academic and behavioral progress.
RESTORATIVE JUSTICE
With small class size and low student to
staff ratios, ALC staff members seek to
develop and build strong relationships
with students and families. Through
relationship building, ALC students (and
parents) begin the “restorative” process
upon enrollment. Restorative justice
practice is a way of thinking and
responding to those that have been
harmed by conflict and wrongdoing, and
provides an opportunity for the students
to understand that their actions affect
others. Students learn to be accountable
for their decisions, and learn that it is
possible to make amends for past
mistakes and move on. This practice
and philosophy serves as the framework
throughout enrollment as students
develop and monitor, with the support of
ALC staff members, academic,
behavioral, and personal goals.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
COMMUNITIES
The ALC employs best practices and
cultivates a collaborative professional
culture to achieve our collective purpose
of learning for all students. All practices
within the ALC are examined through the
lens of the impact they have on student
learning.
