ホームステイを終えて The Final Homestay
先日、村での最後のホームステイが終わりま
した。
私事になりますが、私は幼い頃から父の仕
事の関係で国内外の転校を繰り返してきまし
た。辛い別れを乗り越えるために、「生きてい
れば会える」がいつの間にか私のモットーに
なっていました。世界のどこにいてもインター
ネットでつながれる世の中ですし、お金さえあ
れば飛行機でどこにでも行くことができます。
再会のための必要最低条件は、「生きている
こと」です。
私は今回、２軒の家庭でホームステイをさ
せてもらったのですが、いずれも最後の別れ

は想像以上に辛いものでした。私たちが日本
に帰国したら、次会えるのはいつになるだろう。
経済的にホストファミリーが日本に来ることができるようになる日は来るだろうか。いつか私がザンビアに戻ってき
たとき、彼らは健在だろうか（ザンビアの平均寿命は４９歳）。
このボランティアに応募するまで、私はザンビアのことをほとんど知りませんでした。これからザンビアと日本が、
もっともっと近くなることを願います。
It was our final homestay last week.
I used to transfer a lot since my childhood due to my father’s job. I experienced a lot of farewell. “We can
meet again unless we die” has been my motto without notice to get over the bitter farewells. Nowadays,
we can be connected through the internet wherever we are. We can also go anywhere because there’s
transportation. We can see each other again but the minimum requirement is to be alive.
Two families hosted me during my stay in Zambia. Sadness saying good bye to the families was far
beyond I had expected. When will it be for us to see each other again? Will the time come that my host
families will be able to afford coming to Japan? Are they alive when I come back to Zambia someday?
(The average life expectancy in Zambia is said to be 49.)
To be honest, I hardly knew about Zambia before applying this volunteer. I hope Zambia and Japan will
get much closer in the future.

村滞在を終えて The final week of staying the village
ついに最後の村での滞在が終わりました。今週からホームステイ先の家に女の子が二人増えました。4 歳と 7
歳の子供で二人ともママが引き取って面倒を見るそうです。サーベイで訪問した家庭でも親と離れ、他の家庭に
引き取られ暮らしている子供たちが多い印象を受けました。
ザンビアの子供たちは小さくても働き者で、家の仕事もよく手伝っています。小さくても大きなバケツを頭に乗せ
て運べることに驚きました。4 歳の子はまだうまく運べないので毎朝服がびしょびしょになっています。私も初めて
頭の上にバケツを乗せて運んでみましたが意外に痛くて長い距離を歩くのは大変でした。私が頭にバケツを乗せ
るのに成功した時は井戸周辺が大歓声に包まれました。
二か月と大変短い間にも関わらず、皆さんには娘のように接して頂き、ザンビアの人々の温かさを感じる毎日で
した。こうして毎日一緒にいた人たちとも、もう会えないかもしれないと思うと一つ一つの出会いの大切さを改めて
感じます。環境も文化も違う外国人である私をごく自然に家族の一員として受け入れていただき、楽しい時間を
共に過ごさせていただいたこと、本当に感謝しています。あと残りわずか一週間ですが、悔いのないよう頑張りた
いと思います。
We finally finished all survey in villages. I got 2 new family members in my house. One is 4 years old girl,
the other one is 7 years old girl. My host mother is going to look after them as daughters. I got the
impression through the survey that there are a lot of children who are not staying with parent.
Children in Zambia work very well to help their parent at home even they are young. It surprised me that
even small girl can carry a big bucket of water by their head. But the 4 years old girl was not used to
carrying a bucket of water yet, so she always got wet after carrying water. I tried to carry a bucket of
water by my head this time, but it unexpectedly hurt and hard to walk a long distance. When I succeeded
in putting the bucket on my head, a great cheer arose from neighbors.
I appreciate that everyone accepted me as a member of family and spent such a nice time together.
There is only one week left for me in Zambia. I would like to make it valuable every day.

クッキングデモンストレーション Cooking Demonstration
今週は村での調査、最後の週でした。調査
に並行してクッキングデモンストレーションを
した時の様子をお伝えしようと思います。私
たちのチームは、カフエ・チランガ両郡で一日
ずつクッキングデモンストレーションを実施し
ました。まず驚いたのは、日本の料理教室と
は違い品数がとても多いこと。メインであった
豆を煮る方法とオクラの調理法に加え、私た
ちも日本風の料理法を紹介しました。
私たちが紹介したのは、油をあまり使わない
調理法です。村でのホームステイを通して、
料理に使う油の量に驚き、このデモンストレ
ーションをすることにしました。醤油やだしな

どの日本の調味料が無いので日本風を作る
ことは難しかったので、ヘルシーな料理を作
ろうということで、油を使わずに鶏を調理することにし、蒸
し鶏と焼き鳥、チキンスープを作りました。
出来上がった料理は、シマと一緒に参加者みんなで食べ
ました。様々なローカルベジタブルや豆料理が並び、パ
ーティーのようでした。参加者はみなとても勉強熱心で、
とてもやりがいのあるデモンストレーションになりました。
今回取り上げた調理法をぜひいつもの食事でも実践して
ほしいと思います。
This week was the final week of survey in the village.
We also conducted cooking demonstration while
doing survey. Our group held 2 demonstrations in
Kafue and Chilanga districts. I was surprised at the
number of dishes. We were going to introduce the

method of cooking beans and okra. In
addition to those, we also introduced Japanese style cooking.
We showed them how to cook dished with less oil. We were very surprised at the amount of oil they use
into the dishes especially in soup so decided to cook it. It was difficult to cook Japanese food without
Japanese seasoning like soya sauce, we made 3 kind of chicken dishes without any oil; steamed one,
grilled one, and chicken soup.
After finish cooking, we eat all the dishes with nshima. There were so many relishes like vegetables and
beans and it looked like a party. Participants are very eager to learn how to cook more healthy diet so we
were very happy to tell them. I would like them to practice what they learn in the demonstration at home!

農村滞在を終えて Finishing village stay
三週目の村での滞在の最終日にチョングウェ・ルフンサ郡の農業省のオフィサーたちと今週の調査分析や私た
ちが去った後の活動についてのミーティングを行いました。そこで、この二ヶ月の活動のインパクトを一時的なも
のにしないためにも私たちが来る前と全く同じ状況に戻るのではなく、この二ヶ月で得た調査データやフィールド
での経験などを活かして活動の質を向上させていって欲しいと伝えました。すると、オフィサーから「車などの活
動に必要なリソースが無くなるため再びボランティアが来る以前の活動状態に戻ってしまうのは仕方ない」と言わ
れてしまいました。JICA ボランティア活動の本質や意義をまだしっかり理解してもらえていなかった事に対して残
念に思ったと同時に、この非常に正直で素直な返答に驚きました。もし日本人であれば、同じように思っていたと
しても「はい。頑張ります。」と言い意見の対立を避けると思います。そうすれば、円滑にミーティングが終わり彼ら
も早く帰ることもできます。そう考えてみると、このオフィサーたちが正直な気持ちを私たちに伝えてくれたことが
ある意味嬉しく思えました。わざわざこれほど正直に意見をぶつけてくれているのだから私もここは引いてはいけ
ないと思い、グラフを書いたり言い方を変えたりして様々な方法で自分たちボランティアの思いを伝えました。す
ると徐々に理解を示してくれ、「リソースに限界がある状況は変わらないけれど、今回得たデータやフィールド経
験を活かして今後の活動の質を高められるよう努力する。」と言ってくれました。こうして私がしつこく自分の意見
を伝えることができたのも、この三週間を通してフレンドリーに接してくれ、信頼関係を築き易くしてくれたオフィサ
ーのおかげであると思います。ジョークを交えたりして楽しく且つ真剣に終始活動を共に行ってくれたオフィサー
に改めて感謝した瞬間でした。
On the last day of our village stay, we
had a meeting with Chongwe and Rufunsa
district officers of the ministry of agriculture
in order to analyze this week’s data and
discuss the schedule after we leave. In the
meeting, I told them that we would like
them to improve the quality of activities
more than before not to make the impacts
temporary. However the officers said, “It
cannot help but to have the same quality
of activities as before again because we
do not have resources such as a vehicle”.
I felt little disappointed about the fact that
they did not understand a purpose of JICA
volunteer activities of this two months, but
at the same time I was surprised about

we will try” to avoid being opposed to my
opinions even though they had the same opinion as the officers’. If they said so, the meeting would have
done smoothly and they could have gone home earlier. Thinking about their response in this context
made me happy about the fact they told me their opinion very honestly. Their honest response also made
me not give up to tell them my opinions again, so I told them again and again with different ways of
expression and even graphs. Then, they gradually understood my opinion, and told me “We will make
efforts to enhance the quality of our activities even though the situation that we have limited resources will
not change”. I believe that their friendliness and how we were able to trust each other through three
weeks made me tell my opinion again and again without hesitation. It was the moment that I thanked
them and the time that we had fun with jokes and worked for the same goal together.

「生きる」という喜び The joy of “Living”
今週、私はチランガ郡滞在中に 22 歳の誕生日を迎えました。短期隊員のメンバーと同僚のカウンターパ
ートがサプライズを計画してくれていたようで、ザンビア式の祝福の仕方で誕生日を祝ってもらいました。クッ
キングデモンストレーションに来ていた村のマダム達にも盛大に祝ってもらい、とても良い思い出となりまし
た。
ザンビア人に誕生日を祝ってもらったことで私自身ひとつ感じたことがあります。農村で調査をしていると、
「子どもは 10 人いたけど 2 人死んでしまった」とか「先週甥が死んでしまった」という声を聴くことがあります。
ザンビアでは多くの「死」が身近に頻繁に訪れているように感じます。そんな死が近しい場所にある環境で、
自身が一年生きたことを体感する誕生日という日は大変喜ばしい日であると言えます。医療技術が発達し、
大きな食糧問題もない日本で暮らしていると、「生きていること」のありがたさを強く実感することはあまりな
いのかもしれません。
しかし今回ザンビアの人々にザンビアのお祝いの仕方で祝福してもらったことで「生きていること」の素晴
らしさを体感することができました。いきなり村に入ってきた「ただのムズング」の誕生日をどうしてこんな満
面の笑みで、盛大な拍手で祝うことができるのでしょうか。それは誕生日がその人にとってかけがえのない
日であると、ザンビア人がよく分かっているからであると思いました。そのザンビア人の暖かい心に大変感銘
を受けました。
私のザンビア滞在は迫るところあと 1 週間となり、できることも限られています。最後までできる限りの活
動を行い、ザンビア社会にどうにか恩返しができればと強く思います。

Zambian style. Madam who gathered
in the Cooking-demonstration also
celebrated me, they gave me very
happy memory in my life.
I felt a sense of anything by
celebrated my birthday by Zambian.
When I conducted survey in rural
area, I often heard “I had had 10
children but 2 children had been
dead”, “My nephew was dead last
week” and so on. I felt that it seems to
come “death” frequently and close to
in Zambia. In such a case that they
lived each environment cheek by jowl

say great delight. It may not realize
the importance of “life” much in Japan where the medical technology developed and there is not a
big food problem.
However I could realize “life is precious” because in this time I could be celebrated by Zambian
people with Zambian style. Why did they celebrate the birthday of “an ordinary Muzung” who
suddenly entered the village with their face beaming with smiles, by clapping of hands? I think that
because Zambian knows the birthday is irreplaceable for each people. I was strongly impressed such
a Zambian spirit.
There is hardly any activities I can because I will stay Zambia for only a week. I would like to do
everything I possibly could, and I would like to repay an obligation to Zambian society.
