The prefectural flag is cinnabar brown, with the symbol in white centered in the middle. The standard size is 140cm by 200cm. 県の木 秋田杉［昭和41年に決定］ 県の鳥 やまどり［昭和39年に決定］ 秋田県の天然杉は美しい木目と強い材質が特長 で、日本三大美林の一つに数えられています。 キジ科の鳥で、おもに県内の内陸部の山地に住 み、古くから県民に親しまれています。 Prefectural tree : Akita Cedar [Designated in 1966] Lumber produced from Akita's virgin cedars is beautifully grained and extremely strong. A forest of these trees is one of the three most beautiful forests in Japan. Prefectural bird : Copper Pheasant [Designated in 1964] The copper pheasant belongs to the order of Galliformes. Mainly found in the mountains of inland Akita, they have been loved by locals since long ago. 県の花 ふきのとう［昭和29年に選定］ 県の魚 ハタハタ［平成14年に決定］ ＮＨＫが全国から 「郷土の花」 を募集したことがきっ かけで、秋田の花に選ばれました。別名「バッケ」 。 しょっつる料理などで古くから県民に親しまれて きたハタハタ。初冬に産卵のため接岸します。 Prefectural flower : Butterbur Sprout [Designated in 1954] Butterbur sprout was chosen as Akita's flower when the television company NHK made a program about hometown flowers nationwide. It is also called 'Bakke'. Prefectural fish : Sandfish [Designated in 2002] The Sandfish has been well known among the people of Akita for a long time through it’s use in Shottsuru stews and other dishes. Continuing in the wisdom and endeavours of our predecessors that helped build our prefecture we are working with a wide range of people to further develop our diverse culture, traditions and specialist industries. Currently, Japan is responding to the information age, globalization, environmental problems and other new tasks. In contrast, people’s sense of values are also changing, and the value of a relaxed lifestyle spent in a beautiful natural environment is being re-examined. Beautiful nature, the beautiful “Akita Bijin” represented by the figure of Ono no Komachi, the Akita cedar (one of Japan’s three most beautiful trees), the legendary delicious Akita rice “Akita Komachi”, and Akita’s delicious sake (rice wine) are all valuable resources and a source of pride for Akita. The sixth largest Prefecture in Japan, Akita encompasses an area of 11,600 square kilometers and has a population of 1,167,000. The 40 degrees North latitude and 140 degrees East longitude lines intersect in Akita. Beijing, Madrid and New York are also on the 40 degrees north line of latitude. In addition to the opening of joint offices outside the prefecture and overseas, the three prefectures and Hokkaido continue to expand mutual cooperation with the implementation of a common tax for industrial waste. Preparations for Akita "Wakasugi" Sports Festival in 2007 continues to progress with the deciding of 51 municipalities that will host the 41 main events, and the 21 sports events that citizens can freely participate in. Approximately 50000 athletes and affiliated groups from around the country will converge on Akita for this National Sports Festival.
