Peden Hiroko Tamaki “I guess if you were outside looking in, it was really impressive to see everyone – people who have never spoken to each other, don’t even speak the same language, and have never trained together – working efficiently side-by-side,” said Staff Sgt. Michael S. Rice, a military policeman and patrol supervisor. “That’s the purpose of our job. It doesn’t matter who you are, I have a job to do and that’s what I’m going to do. That’s the way the local police department looks at it too.“ The accident was devastating, drawing the attention of nationwide media. However, Chibana attributes the Marines’ training and calm in the face of a stressful situation to the quick, effective response they provided. “That accident set unprecedented severity (for this kind of trailer accident). The chief presented the awards to the Marines for their immediate response to the Jan. 13 wreck that occurred in Zukeran, Kitanakagusuku Village. The accident happened when a flatbed semitrailer unhitched then collided with two passenger vehicles. The incident resulted in the death of three Japanese motorists and the injury of three. Lance Cpl. Steven Danisi, an accident investigator, happened to be driving behind the (flatbed semitrailer) and saw the accident, according to Moriyoshi Teruya, an assistant police inspector with the traffic investigation section, Okinawa Police Station. “He pulled over and immediately worked on rescuing victims, and sent a radio notification to his office,” said Teruya. “The five Marines came to the scene, and together they responded to the accident (until) the Japanese police arrived.” Once the Marines were on site, they were able to assist many of the victims while waiting for Okinawa police officers, according to Danisi. “The Camp Foster military police arrived and helped get people out,” said Danisi. “(Marine Corps Fire and Emergency Services personnel) showed up on scene to get the people that were trapped in the vehicles out. The local police arrived minutes later. We all tried our best to help them out and get the individuals out of the cars, so they could get the proper medical attention they needed. An Okinawa resident was crossing Route 58 near Onna Village when a moped struck him. Three Marines, Staff Sgts. Anthony J. Sanders and Jon Joyce along with Sgt. Joshua K. Kuykendall, noticed the man who appeared to be injured lying in the road on their way home and rushed to provide aid. “We were headed back to Camp S c hw ab a f ter enjoy i ng d i n ner i n American Village,” said Sanders, a recovery chief with Amphibious Assault Company. “ We saw the man lying in the road and first-responders hadn’t arrived yet. (He) looked like he needed help.” With help from other Japanese citizens, the Marines created a safety area around the injured man and proceeded to provide appropriate aid using various items they had on hand. They used pieces of clothing to brace the v ictim’s head and neck, according to Kuykendall, a quality control chief with Amphibious Assault Co. They used a backpack to help brace his back and, when he began to shiver, a sweater was used to keep the victim warm. The assistance they provided was greatly appreciated, according to Capt. Yoshimitsu Ginoza, a chief paramedic with the Onna Detachment, Kin District Fire Station. “There are no street lights at the site of the accident while traffic load is high. The Marines took action swiftly and controlled traffic, which prevented a second or third accident,” said Ginoza days later. “They also kept the inju red man wa r m w it h their clothing. We really appreciate them.” The Marines credit the variety of training they received while in the Marine Corps for their ability to provide appropriate aid. Kuykendall said knowledge attained during recruit training, field training and numerous safet y procedures followed daily provided the understanding and skills necessary for the precarious situation. “We acted together as a team, helping each other to help the injured man,” added Kuykendall. Fifteen Marines, along with some of their family members, volunteered to share a small part of their culture by teaching English to Okinawa children Feb. 22 at the Nago City Youth Center as part of a Nago City Board of Education program. “The Nago City Board of Education has various programs for promoting English education, and this (event) is one of them,” said Miyuki Aragaki, a supervisor with the board of education. The volunteers taught the participants how to speak conversational English using a variety of phrases. “We are here to make sure that (Okinawa children) are comfortable speaking (English),” said Cpl. Curtis K. Brown, an event participant and ammunition technician with Combat Logistics Regiment 35. During the event, partici- pants introduced themselves and played some games in the morning. In the afternoon, they watched a performance of the play “Snow White” by the Marine volunteers and parents. Then they split into teams and were challenged to formulate a sequel to the play in which they had to include certain English phrases, and the U.S. volunteers had to use certain Japanese phrases. The event allowed both U.S. service members and Okinawa citizens to interact outside of work or business, according to Lt. Col. Devin O. Licklider, an event participant and pilot with III Marine Expeditionary Force. “It’s firsthand interaction, not just being in the same place (with little) interacting at all,” said Licklider. “We actually got to talk and find out what they enjoy.” Interaction between the two groups was initially limited by the inability to fluently speak each other’s languages, but as the event continued communication became easier, according to Minami Kise, a student at Haneji Middle School. リック・Ｒ・ハラー上等兵） Lance Cpl. The III MEF Band also entertained the audience, according to Matsumoto, encouraging FC Ryukyu and the band to collaborate on future events. “They were very impressed,” said Matsumoto. “Some of them were taking pictures or watching with rapt attention. We are very glad that we requested (for the band to play at the game). The band performed at the Family Mart Dream Match, an exhibition game between two well-known women soccer teams, March 23 at the Okinawa Comprehensive Athletic Park in Awase, Okinawa. The match was between the International Athletic Club Kobe Leonessa, winners of the Mobcast Cup International Women’s Club Championship in 2013, and the University of California, Los Angeles Bruins, the U.S. college team that won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Championship in 2013. The III MEF Band traditionally plays concerts for the community at militaryoriented functions. But, when Okinawa soccer club FC Ryukyu invited it to perform at the match, the band took the opportunity to perform at a new venue for a new audience. “(The soccer game) was the first time for many of the Japanese audience to see (the band), and they were curious,” said Mari Matsumoto, a public relations officer with FC Ryukyu. “It was fantastic, and I was impressed because we usually don’t get to see their performance at soccer games. The musicians and four color guards were professional, coordinating each and every move well, and it was fun to watch. The music was very good, too.” For many members of the UCLA team, this was their first time traveling to Okinawa, and their first experience with the III MEF Band. “It’s amazing getting to travel across the Pacific to Japan,” said Abigail L. Dahlkemper, a defensive player for the Bruins. “I think seeing the skills that these players bring, being able to play here, and getting to experience the culture together as a team is definitely going to help us (bond). With every challenge, they were very patient, very professional.” With their demonstrated professionalism, the interns contributed to building direct relationships between medical providers at the Naval Hospital and their Japanese counterparts on Okinawa, according to Chen. “They provided over 800 medical translations for patients and staff and completed several important translation projects over the course of the year,” said Chen. “They provided basic life support training to over 100 American and Japanese health care providers. The interns, having just spent a year filled with valuable experience, learned about and were each a part of the Western-style medicine and care provided through the hospital. The interns rotated between 12 medical specialties at the hospital and further honed their practice patterns by undergoing an evidence-based medicine curriculum, according to Lt. Cmdr. Jenny P. Chen, program director. The interns also served as medical translators for Japanese spouses who seek care at the hospital. The interns also served as liaisons between the Naval Hospital and Japanese hospitals on Okinawa. “The interns have coordinated transfers of numerous American patients requiring care at Okinawan hospitals for services not available at our facility, such as pediatric intensive care, cardiac catheterization, and certain subspecialized surgical procedures,” said Chen. “By building bridges with Okinawan physicians, they have ensured that our patients receive the very best care available.” The internship program serves as a springboard for those who want to study or practice medicine in the U.S., according to Reiichiro Obata, one of the interns. “This is a very attractive program, which has helped interns to go to the United States after graduation for more than 20 years,” said Obata. “The medical culture in Japan and America are somewhat different, and the medical practice I want to do is closer to that of the States.” While practicing the Western-style of medicine in the English-speaking environment of U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, the interns vastly improved their language skills. “The language barrier was the toughest challenge, but now I understand much better and I can carry discussions in English,” said Keiji Akamine, another graduating intern. “I examined patients and reported the results to the hospital doctor. Then we discussed what the best treatment would be. I think that helped me improve my English.” This year’s group of interns faced some extra challenges starting with a typhoon that struck on their scheduled interview day to the hospital’s relocation from Camp Lester to Camp Foster, according to Lt. Cmdr. Evan Williamson, assistant program director. “The day of their interviews (we were hit by) Typhoon Jelawat. We will be able to get to a more formal agreement in the future.” During the exercise, simulated evacuees were brought aboard Camp Hansen by bus, ambulance and an Okinawa Prefectural Police helicopter. Marines and sailors gave it their all in a friendly table tennis tournament against the Kin Town Table Tennis Club Feb. 15 at the Kin Town Education Center Gym. “A group of Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Regiment 3, Combat Logistics Battalion 4 and 9th Engineer Support Battalion have been training on Wednesday evenings to learn and better understand the game (of table tennis),” said Navy Lt. John W. Potter, the chaplain for CLR-3 and CLB-4. “They’ve played in small tournaments before with other Marines. However, I thought it would be a good idea for them to (take on) a more experienced group. Playing with the Kin Town Table Tennis Club is a great opportunity.” The tournament started with practice matches pitting service members against club members for familiarization. “I haven’t been playing table tennis that long,” said Pfc. Yu Lee, a motor vehicle operator with CLB-4. “However, I do play normal tennis which really helps, but playing with the Kin Town team really showed me how much more I have to go to improve at table tennis. Their team is extremely good.” Following the completion of the practice matches, the tournament began. “The tournament started with five roundrobin groups consisting of four players each,” said Potter. Editor: How long have you been working at the mess hall? Tamanaha: I have been working at the mess hall for about 23 years. Working at the Camp Foster mess hall was my dream when I was working as a cook at a civilian hotel in Naha. Then I became a master labor contract employee on the U.S. military installation and started working as a security guard, but l transferred to the Foster mess hall a few years later. So my dream came true. Editor: W hy was you r dream working at the mess hall? Tamanaha: Mess halls of- fer so many menu choices and recipes, I can learn a variety of dishes. For example, if you look at potato dishes, there are so many varieties here. Also, a recipe can call for one thing, but if I ask Marines how they prepare it back in their hometown, they may tell me how they might cook it a little differently where they came from. I am constantly learning new dishes. However, it’s important to note that mess halls across the Marine Corps offer the same menu. Marine Corps headquarters in Washington D.C. sends out an annual plan of master menus for each season of the year to ensure standardized calorie consumption. Editor: What are the challenges you face? Tamanaha: The challenge is the difference in customs and ideas. There are times that I may think it’s better to do something one way, and Americans may think it’s better to accomplish the task another way. But our manager is very helpful and supportive of Japanese employees. He talks to each of us in person, which makes it easy for us to talk to him. I think communication is essential for teamwork, and we are doing a good job because we are a good team. I am very appreciative (of being able to work here). Japanese employees and Marines are very close at the mess hall because every one of us works closely together with Marines side-by-side. Editor: How many customers do you serve? Tamanaha: We offer three meals a day and normally serve 400-500 customers at each meal, including both enlisted and officers. The number of customers can increase up to 800 when new Marines arrive on Okinawa because they gather on Camp Foster before they are sent to their assigned camps or installations. Editor: What makes your job rewarding? Tamanaha: After Marines finish their work, I want them to relax when they eat. Serving the food they enjoy and seeing their happy faces are the source of my motivation.
