「新しい命の始まり」

「一粒の麦は、地に落ちて死ななければ、一粒のままである。
だが、死ねば、多くの実を結ぶ。」（ヨハネ福音書１２：２４）
イースター（復活祭）おめでとうございます！！イースターと共
に今年も春が巡ってきました。日本は早々と桜が満開のようです
ね。アメリカも首都ワシントンＤＣのポトマック河周辺の桜並木
が満開になり恒例
の「桜祭り」が盛
大に開かれまし
た。この有名な桜
並木は１９１２年
3 月 27 日に、東京
の尾崎行雄市長が
中心になり３０２０本の桜の苗木を、アメリカとの友好にと贈っ
たものです。３年後の１９１５年にはアメリカから４０本の「は
なみずき」が東京に贈られました。昨年（２０１２年）に日米友
好の桜 100 年記念にこの記念切手が発行されました。
3 月 31 日に私達は輝かしい主の復活を、岡田圭牧師の素晴らしい
バイリンガルの説教と、豊かな音楽礼拝でお祝い致しました！！
独唱（ソプラノ）の森谷直美さんとピアノ伴奏の三本志保さん。
バイオリンの坪田昌代さんとピアノ伴奏の奥田知寿さん、礼拝奏
楽者の洪マリさん達が心を込めて、豊かな音楽の賜物を捧げて礼
拝を盛り上げて下さいました。新しい方々やゲスト、教会員のご
家族などで、出席者は今までに最高の合計４４名でした！！
一昨年帰国された元教会員・萩原高行・朝恵ご夫妻が、ホー
ムカミングでＮＹ訪問され、イースター礼拝にご出席。嬉しい再
会となりました！鈴木智子さんのお姉様・平間幸子さんと子供た
ち（優実ちゃん琢磨君）は学校の春休みにＮＹを訪問され、イー
スターに鈴木一家と共に出席され嬉しかったです！最近ＮＹ駐在
として一家で来られたばかりの、吉枝道生・恵ご夫妻と娘たち
（滴さん、陸ちゃん）はインターネットで我々の教会を見つけて
出席された素敵なクリスチャン一家です！竹友安彦先生・晴子ご
夫妻のご長男一家（竹友まさひこ・Ruth 夫妻と、息子さん達
（Erik & Edward）の「竹友三世代」が出席され最高の喜びでし
た。礼拝後のランチョンもイースターの喜びに溢れ、一生懸命に
歌う子供たちの讃美が本当に可愛かったです！John Parisis さん
がピアノ演奏をされて、祝福されたイースターになりました！！
１９４５年４月９日にデイートリッヒ・ボンフェッファーは
絞首刑になりました。彼は「これがわたしの命の終わりです。で
も命の始まりです。」と語って処刑されました。彼の命は終わり
ました。「すべてが終わった」のです。でも彼は復活のキリスト
と共に始まる新しい命を信じていたのです。我々の眼には彼の人
生は未完成で意味が無かったように見えますが、我々の命は神様
が支配しておられ、神様のみ手に導かれているのです。「わたし
たちは、生きるとすれば主のために生き、死ぬとすれば主のため
に死ぬのです。従って、生きるにしても、死ぬにしても、わたし

remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears
much fruit.” (John 12:24)
HAPPY EASTER!
When
Easter
arrives,
spring has come, new life
reappears in nature. The
beautiful blossoming cherry
trees all over in Japan and
along the Potomac River in
Washington D.C. inspire conversation and admiration.
These beautiful trees from the city of Tokyo are a
gift of friendship to the people of the United States of
America on behalf of the people of Japan presented on
March 27, 1912.
Yukio Ozaki, the mayor of Tokyo, and several
others in Japan and the United States, supported this
Cherry Blossom Project to commit to strengthening
U.S.-Japan friendship. In 1915, three years after the
gift of cherry trees from Japan, the United States
Government reciprocated with a gift of 40 flowering
dogwood trees to the people of Japan. Today the
National Cherry Blossom Festival draws more than a
million visitors. The Commemorative stamp issued in
2012 is pictured on the left column of this page.
A joyous Easter was celebrated with a total 44
attendees of our church families, friends, guests, and
new friends whom God has sent to us on March 31.
Visitors from Japan were: former UJCW members,
Mr. & Mrs. Takayuki & Asae Hagiwara who came to
“Homecoming” NY, and celebrated Easter with us!
Tomoko Suzuki’s older sister Mrs. Sachiko Hirama,
with daughter Yumi, and son Takuma visited from
Tokyo. We also welcomed first time attendees, the
Yoshieda Christian Family: Mr. and Mrs. Michio and
Megumi Yoshieda, and two daughters, Shizuku and
Riku. They recently arrived in NY from Aichi
prefecture. The Taketomo Family attended with three
generations: Mr. Masa and Mrs. Ruth, and their two
sons, Erik and Edward attended with grandpa and
grandma, Dr. Yauhiko and Mrs. Haruko Taketomo!!
Our Easter Service was greatly blessed!

たちは主のものです。」（ローマ１４：８）
「人間にはただ一度死ぬことと、その後に裁きを受けること
が定まっている…」（ヘブライ人への手紙９：２７）中世の修道
院には「メメント・モリ（汝の死を覚えよ）」と書かれていたそ
うですが、私達は自分の死の備えを常にしておくべきだと改めて
思わされます。私達は命、死を支配する事は出来ません。人間は
すべて死なねばなりません。人生は短いものです。愛する者の死
に出会った時、自分自身の罪深さを知らされ、もっと愛してあげ
るべきだったと後悔します。せめてもう一度チャンスが与えられ
たなら、もっと愛を示したいと言う思いを抱きます。・・・
私がホノルルのヌアヌ組合教会の日語部牧師をしていた時
2000 年８月に日本で妹が心臓麻痺で急逝しました。妹の死は私に
十字架のイエス様の死を見つめさせてくれました。その後、
度々、散歩したり、黙想したり、教会員の方々の葬儀や埋葬など
で、ホノルルのパンチボール（太平洋国立墓地）を訪れたもので
す。第１次大戦以来、戦争で命を失った多くの方々の墓地を歩い
て、若者が捧げた「犠牲の死」に痛みを覚えずには居られません
でした。そして「死」は他の人々への「犠牲」でもあると思いま
した。特に「愛する者の死」は残された者に何か新しいものを残
し、新しく死の意味を考えさせ、「永遠の命」とは何か？永遠を
見つめる信仰を深めてくれます。どのような死でも周りの者に、
新しい実--和解、赦し、平安、愛、家族としてお互いに愛し合い、
支えあう事など、新しい果実をもたらすものだと思います。

When Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged by the Nazi on
April 9, 1945, he said, “This is the end for me,
beginning of life.” His life ended. “It is finished!” We
may see Bonhoeffer’s life as incomplete and
meaningless. However, in God’s eyes, it is completed.
It is finished. Bonhoeffer believed the beginning of
New Life with our Risen Christ. We may feel that our
life is incomplete but it belongs to God. Halleluiah!
Christ is risen, indeed!
“And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once,
and after that the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27) In the
medieval monastery, there is a Latin saying “memento
mori” (remember that you must die). We human

い、頭を垂れて息を引き取られた。」（新共同訳聖書、ヨハネ福
音書１９：３０）この「成し遂げられた」と言う言葉は口語訳で
は「すべてが終わった」と訳されていました。我々の眼にはイエ
ス様の死は無意味で未完成に見えます。この「すべてが終わっ
た」とはどういう意味でしょうか？イエスに与えられた神様の業
は完成したと言う意味でしょう。イエス様の人生から何も取り去
ったり取り除けたりする必要はないという「完成した」と言う意
味です。イエス様の死は神様の意志の元にあり、イエス様は神様
のご意志を完全に成し遂げられたのです。イエス様は「頭を垂れ
て息を引き取られました。」父なる神の意志に従うしるしとして
頭を垂れて神のみ旨を受け入れられたのです。
「一粒の麦は、地に落ちて死ななければ、一粒のままである。
だが、死ねば、多くの実を結ぶ。」（ヨハネ福音書１２：２４）
この一粒の麦は地に落ちて、完全に死んだことによって多くの実
を結んだのです。特にお互いの人間関係を強め助け合うようにし
てくれました。霊の実— 平和、愛、赦し、和解— これらはもっと
深い意味を教えてくれます。同時に「一粒の麦」とは我々に命を
犠牲として捧げられたイエス・キリストを指しています。クリス
チャンとして家族の死は、残された家族の絆を強め、十字架に近
づけ、神様ご自身が一人子であるイエス・キリストの死によって
深く痛みを感じておられることを知るのです。復活されたキリス
トの喜びが深い悲しみを乗り越えさせてくれます。我々はやがて
天で愛する者と再会して永遠に神様の愛の元で過ごすと言う希望
を与えられております。復活のキリストと共に新しい命に生きる
者とされ、与えられた人生を力強く歩み出しましょう。「だれが
世に打ち勝つか。イエスが神の子と信じる者ではありません
か。」（ヨハネの手紙一、５：５）ハレルヤ！アーメン！！
beings cannot control life. Life is in the control of God.
We must
humble ourselves. We are mortals.
Everybody will die. Our lives are really very short.
The death of loved ones teaches us how sinful we are,
and we regret that we did not do more for the person.
A person did not want to die in the hospital or nursing
home or that person perhaps wanted to have a special
Japanese meal. We have the feeling that given one
more chance, we could do more to show our love.
My sister’s death in 2000 taught me to look at
Jesus’ death on the cross. “When Jesus had received
the wine, he said, `It is finished.` Then he bowed his
head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:30). In our eyes,
Jesus’ death may seem meaningless and ends as
incomplete. What is the meaning of “It is finished”?
The work given to Jesus by the Father was now
completed. Nothing more needed to be added and
nothing could be taken away from it. Jesus’ death was
under God, his Father’s will. Jesus accepted God’s
will. He fulfilled God’s will. He bowed his head and
gave up his spirit. Those who died by crucifixion
normally raised their heads at the end to gasp for
breath and then dropped them when they died. Jesus
bowed his head before he died as a sign of submission
to the Father’s will, and to show he gave his life of his
own volition and not because he was powerless.
After my sister’s death I often went to Punchbowl,
the National Cemetery for the Pacific in Honolulu,
Hawaii, to walk, meditate, and sometimes for church
member’s funerals to officiate. I thought that death is
a sacrifice of life for others. After your loved ones
passed away, did you experience any new thing in
your life or feel any meaning from the death? I believe

桜は１９９０年に、我々の教会がヒッチコック
教会との友好のしるしに贈ったものです。１９
９０年１０月２８日の日曜日に植樹式が行われ
た記録がヒッチコック教会のニュースレター
(１９９０年１２月号)に載っています。

Chizu Okuda, Piano; and our church pianist, Mali
Hung complemented the glorious spirit-filled service.
With joyful hearts to God, we thank them for their
gifts to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. Easter
luncheon was also a very happy occasion to share
delicious meal and warm fellowship. A “Family Mini
Concert” was also enjoyed during fellowship time. The
highlight was the children’s singing of Japanese
Sunday School hymns, and pianist John Parisis who
exuded a delightful and happy spirit! Let us fill our
lives with fresh and renewed spirit with Christ!

（このニュースレター記事は元ヒッチコック教会員、現在,日本キ
リスト教団・枚方マラナ・タ教会牧師：久下倫生牧師が日本から
送ってくださいました。）
我々のユニオン日本語教会は、１９８９年に創立されましたの
で、この「八重桜贈呈式」は創立二年目に行われたのです。
その後、ヒッチコック長老教会礼拝堂は１９８６年６月に火災で
全焼した後、１９９１年に再建された新拝堂の記念にと、礼拝堂
の前庭に植樹されました。ニュースレターによると、当日はあい
にく雨がひどかったので礼拝堂内でユニオン教会の初代牧師：安
藤ゆり牧師とＳＭＪデイレクター・中嶋剛牧師の二人が、ヒッチ
コック長老教会の主任牧師（ボブ・マクレナン牧師：Rev. Bob
MacLennan) に苗木を贈り、その後教会の前庭に植樹されたと
ニュースレターに書かれていました。植樹されてから２３年が経
ち大きく成長した「八重桜」は、大きなピンクの花を豪華に咲か
せて人々を楽しませてくれています！やはり「桜」は日本とアメ
リカの友好のシンボルです！

gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23) Walking through Punchbowl, I was
very thankful that so many young people sacrificed
their lives for social justice, human rights,
discrimination, equality, and freedom. These s lives
were sacrificed for nations and for people of the world.
Therefore, let us continue to carry out these reasons
for their sacrifices. Punchbowl was originally called
Puowaina which in Hawaiian means “hill of sacrifice.”
What is the meaning of this sacrificial death? On
Memorial Day, May 29 let us be thankful we are living
in peace because of their sacrifice.
We perceive the meaning of “a grain of wheat falls
into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain;
but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24) This

grain fell and died truly began to bear much fruit
especially in strengthening relationships and caring
for one another. The fruits of the spirit--peace, love,
forgiveness, reconciliation--have given me deeper
meaning now. At the same time, the real meaning of
“a grain of wheat” is Jesus Christ who sacrificed his
life for us. For us as Christians, the death of a family
member brings us closer to Jesus’ cross and we
understand God’s pain in the death of his only beloved
son, Jesus.
However, we have hope in the
Resurrection of Jesus. Joy of the risen Christ
overcomes the deep grief. I hope for the time when we
will be united again with our loved ones in God’s
loving and eternal care. Praise God!
Let us begin to walk in new life with the Risen

and Resurrection.”
Rev. Dr. Jun Yoshimatsu (The Good
Shepherd UMC, Bergenfield, NJ) offered
his inspiring and informative lecture. We
all appreciated the very meaningful day!

Cultural Arts Festival : ４月１８日（木）
リビング・イン・アメリカ（英語クラス）
ヒッチコック長老教会の英語クラス(Living-in-America)も２０
12 年―２０13 年度が終わりに近づきました。今年で３6 年目とな
るこの英語クラスは多くのボランテア・スタッフの下で、毎週木
曜日の午前中、多くの生徒が参加しています。今年の登録生徒数
は１０８名（３月２１日現在）です。登録者の約７０％が日本人
です。参加者一同毎週楽しく学んでいます。年間カリキュラムに
は、英語の歌、見学、アメリカの祝日や習慣に関する学び、アメ
リカ人の家庭訪問などが組み込まれています。今年のコーデイネ
ーターはリンダ・キャンプ(Linda Camp)さん、ダイアン・ギス
モンド(Diane Gismond)さん、エレノア・ノーベンバー(Eleanor
November)さん、の３名。毎週ギターで歌の指導はレニー・シー
ル(Rene Thiel)さんです。先生方のご奉仕に感謝致します。
例年、年度末に行われている「文化紹介フェステｲバル」
が今年は４月１８日（木）９時３０分から１１時まで３０分まで
開催されます。他国の興味深い文化紹介が毎年楽しみです！クラ
スごとに各国の歌やダンス、楽器演奏、民族衣装、クラフトや文
化紹介等が披露されます。来月の月報でご報告します。
Cultural Arts Festival of Living-In-America
April 18, Thursday
Living-in-America is a Hitchcock Presbyterian Church
outreach program started in 1976. During the 2012-2013 year,
there are 108 people registered as of March 21, including
approximately 70% Japanese wives. Every Thursday morning,
this program provides English conversation classes during the
school year. Singing, cooking, trips, learning about American
holidays and customs, and visiting American homes are
included in the program. It is a very
successful and enjoyable program!
Coordinators for 2012-2013 are Diane
Gismond, Linda Camp, and Eleanor
November. The music leader with her
guitar is Rene Thiel.
The Annual Cultural Arts Festival is
Thursday, April 18. The festival is a
time for students to share their cultural
traditions with performances, craft demonstrations, and
exhibitions. The students are planning and practicing with
joyous and appreciative attitude! We thank God for Hitchcock
Church and the many faithful volunteer teachers for this
informative and popular program offered for many years.

The beautiful double Cherry Blossoms will blossom soon on
the front lawn of Hitchcock Church. This Japanese Cherry
Tree was a friendship gift from Union Japanese Church to
Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, our host church in 1990.
“A flowering Japanese cherry tree for the lawn of the new
sanctuary has been given by the Japanese congregation that
worships at Hitchcock. During a brief ceremony on Sunday,
October 28, 1990, held in the
sanctuary because of a drizzling
rain, the gift was presented to the
congregation by the Revs.
Takeshi Nakashima and Yuri
Ando and received by Bob
MacLennan. Afterwards, a more
hardy group took part in the
actual tree planting.”--Hitchcock Presbyterian Church,

ン・ノートン牧師(Rev. Jon Norton)が 5 月
に引退されます。ノートン先生は 1994 年にＮ
Ｙ地区長に就任されてから今日まで、温かい
包容力と理解ある指導をして下さり、我々の
教会員一同に慕われてこられました。長年の
ご指導とお交わりに心より感謝致します。
Retirement Celebration for
Rev. Jon Norton
May 19, Pentecost Sunday, 4:00 p.m.
The Rev. Jon Norton, Executive Minister of RCA, NY
Synod, will retire in May. We will dearly miss Rev. Norton
and his caring and friendly leadership and also his inspiring
sermons ever since he became Executive Minister to Synod
of New York in 1994.
The Synod of New York is planning the Retirement
Celebration honoring him on Pentecost Sunday, May 19,
at 4:00 p.m. at DoubleTree Hotel, 455 South Broadway,
Tarrytown, NY 10591
＊Dinner: $50 per person
