Why ski or snowboard in Hakuba?
Hakuba has an average snowfall of 11 metres each season. The Hakuba Valley
incorporates 10 ski resorts, over 200 runs, 139 lifts and free shuttles to get you from

When to go?
第
岩岳
Resorts are typically open from early December to late April, however the best time to
go for quality snow is from Christmas until the middle of March. Those who love sunny
days will prefer to come in March where the big snowfalls still occur, however are
usually interspersed with high pressure systems ensuring plenty of sunshine.

Tip - Trains don’t need to be booked in
advance, nor does the bus from Nagano to
Hakuba. Coach buses and shared taxi’s
must be booked in advance.
Ask your Liquid Tours consultant for
detailed information and quotes on how to
make your journey. Transfers included in
your package can be customised to suit
your arrival times and needs.
• Enjoy live music, slope side, at The Marillen.
• Be sure to visit the ‘make your own pizza’ restaurant for lunch at Cortina.
• Go to ‘The Pub’ in Wadano on a Saturday night for a lively party.
• Chuo Taxi (shared taxi) is the easiest way to get from Narita to Hakuba.
• Choose a Saturday as your rest day - Tokyo weekenders can be out in force!
• Bring slippers to wear indoors as many properties ask you to take your shoes off indoors.
Did you know? The Japanese characters
for Hakuba 白馬, mean white horse.

Hakuba 47 and Goryu are interlinked resorts. Both resorts are known for consistent
powder and great snow suitable for both skiers and boarders of any standard. Hakuba
47 has an excellent terrain park including a halfpipe and boardercross course. Night
skiing is open at Goryu until 10pm.
The terrain at Cortina is reasonably small compared to the nearby resorts. The
real treat for skiers and snowboarders here is the tree skiing.
Cortina usually receives more snowfall than other resorts
so on a powder day people flock to Cortina.

How to get there
Staff Tips
• Go night skiing at Grand Hirafu
(included in your Niseko lift pass) - it has
arguably the best night skiing in the world.
• Stay in the lower village for better value, still
close to the lifts but much cheaper!
• Pack extra, extra warm clothes - it is very cold.
• Avoid the Chinese New Year Period,
accommodation is expensive and the
village is packed.
From Sapporo Chitose airport or
Sapporo city:
• 2.5 hours by train and bus - train to
Kutchan and bus to Hirafu. ($$)
• 3 hours by direct bus to Hirafu. ($)
Niseko is a well established tourism destination with great access (once you have
arrived in Sapporo), with direct buses leaving almost hourly during peak season.
When flying from Australia you will need to catch an extra flight up to Sapporo, as
opposed to accessing the resorts on the main island. Niseko is indisputably Japan’s
number one international ski resort, with the highest number of foreign visitors and the
best tourism infrastructure. The catalyst for all this is Hokkaido’s famously light and
fluffy powder snow, delivered by air systems over Siberia and made possible by
Niseko’s cold temperatures. If you are looking for a luxury ski holiday in Japan, Niseko
is the destination for you with a plethora of modern Western accommodation available.
Due to the large numbers of Australian tourists almost everything in town is in English,
and most staff speak English (if they aren’t Australians themselves), making it
extremely easy to get around town, order meals and organise extras such as ski hire,
lessons and tours.
Best time to go?
Niseko enjoys a longer season than its counterparts on the main island of Japan due
to its latitude, with consistent snowfall from early December to early April. The first two
weeks of March are a great time to go, it is still generally snowing heavily and consistently, and most accommodation is at a 30% discount to their January rates.
13
The main ski areas in Niseko are Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono.
They are all skiable on the one lift pass called Niseko United All Mountain Pass.

Rusutsu is a typical ski resort born of the 1980s ski boom in Japan; that is, a large ski resort with a
large purpose built (and quirky) hotel at the base, and nothing else. Being only an hours bus ride from
Niseko, Rusutsu shares its neighbour's exceptional snowfall, however with much smaller crowds. It
is definitely a resort for the enthusiasts due to its ski in/ski out access to A-grade powder snow and
lack of nightlife.
Rusutsu Accommodation Packages
Stay in large Western style rooms right on the snow, with onsens, restaurants, bars and even a
swimming pool all within the hotel. Great for a family holiday or as an add-on to your Niseko stay.

Furano is located in central Hokkaido and is easily accessed by a three-hour bus ride from New
Chitose Airport. Those who love corduroy will love Furano.
The grooming is near perfect with different degrees of difficulty. Furano maintains a strict ‘no
off-piste’ policy, though it's done by nearly all. Furano receives less average snowfall than Niseko
and Rusutsu, about eight metres, but the snow quality is known to be lighter and fluffier. It also has
more blue/sunny days than any other resort in Hokkaido offering spectacular views.
Tips: Furano is a great stop over before or after a trip to Niseko.

flow from 30 sources, which means each onsen contains a different set of minerals. There
are 13 free public access onsens, and most of the accommodation in Nozawa Onsen has
its own. Along with its onsens the town is most famous for its Dosojin Fire Festival held on
the 15th of January every year. This involves the men of the village battling each other to
burn down a huge wooden tower, a truly unique spectacle to witness!
Staff Tips
• Book early if you want to stay during Nozawa's famous Fire Festival on the 15th of January.
• Take waterproof shoes for the evenings. Heavy snow + heated roads = big puddles
• Don’t worry about getting a room with a shower, there are 13 free public onsens and most of the
accommodation in Nozawa Onsen also have their own onsen.
• Avoid the weekends if possible.
• Eat early, after 9pm it’s hard to find a meal.
• Take a walk and get lost in this tiny village, you might just find some wonderful temples.
• Climb the observatory near the top of Sky Line Link for breathtaking views.

options.
Food and Drink?
On the mountain you’ll find heaps of Japanese eateries. Off the mountain you’ll find restaurants serving reasonably
priced traditional Japanese meals, pizza and pasta. Most hotels also include a Japanese or Western breakfast.
There’s a couple of bars to keep you entertained, but if you are heading to Myoko it is definitely for the bottomless
powder and rich culture and less about the party scene.

international mountain resort. This makes it one of the oldest established ski areas in the world. It was also a
traditional retreat of Japan's Imperial Family for many years.
Liquid Snow Tours staff tips:
• Stay near Akakura Kanko or Akakura Onsen resort where most visitors tend to base themselves.
• If you're an experienced skier visit Seki Onsen on a powder day.
• Pack your phrase book or download a language app.
• If you plan to ride backcountry, be sure to take your own equipment. A backcountry guide can

TOKYO
It would be a sin to travel to Japan and not spend some time in the
world’s largest city, with over 34 million people in the immediate Kanto
area. Not only is Tokyo huge it is super quirky and bursting with unique
experiences. Some highly recommended spots are:
Ueno: experience some Japanese history and culture in the art galleries and museums.
Asakusa: get a glimpse of ‘Old Edo’ where you can find temples and shrines steeped in tradition.
Imperial Palace: enjoy the natural beauty, massive stone walls and quiet moats, easily accessed
from Tokyo station.
Party spots: if you are looking for a fun night out Tokyo is full of good spots. Shibuya has an
abundance of bars, and the superclub Ageha is one not to miss on a Saturday night.
Tsukiji fish market: get up bright and early to see the world’s largest fish markets in full swing.
Jimbocho: for all your ski and snowboard needs.
Citadines Shinjuku

Extend your stay in Japan
with a two or three night
add on package.
There’s literally hundreds of ski resorts in Japan. After many hours of product testing
in the Japanese ski fields the staff of Liquid Snow Tours have put together their pick
of add-on ski resorts to ensure you’re getting the most out of your Japan snow trip.
The resorts featured as ‘add on packages’ are smaller than the two largest ski
resorts of Hakuba and Niseko, however they are definitely worth the visit. A two or
three night stay would be the perfect addition to any seven night package. Add on
packages start from $400, but like any of the Liquid Snow Tours packages they can
be customised to suit your travel needs.
Cortina
Hakuba’s freeriding Mecca located 30 minutes from the main village. Staying in the ski in/ski out Green Plaza
hotel will guarantee first tracks each morning!
Myoko Kogen
Myoko Kogen is only a 2 hour drive from Hakuba, however its closer location to the sea and elevation give it
a slightly different snowfall pattern to Hakuba.
Nozawa Onsen
Nozawa Onsen is a quaint skiing village steeped in tradition, from the hot spring onsens to the izakayas and
the ryokans. Most of the village is within an easy walk of the 20-chairlift resort which has plenty of powder
runs to satisfy the most avid powderhound. See page 20 for more information on Nozawa.
Madarao
Madarao is a mid-sized resort that features great tree skiing and reasonably steep bowls if you want them. A
few days at Madarao would be more than enough, though it also connects on top with another resort
Tangram so you could experience both resorts if you wanted. More info on Madarao is available on page 25.
Rusutsu
Rusutsu is blessed with the same light dry powder. However it lacks the crowds that can sometimes be an
issue in Niseko. Only a 60 minute bus trip from Niseko (and closer to Sapporo airport than Niseko) a 2 or 3
night stopover in Rusutsu after a stay in Niseko is the perfect cap-off to a powder trip. For more info on
Rusutsu see page 18 of this booklet.
Furano
Furano is located in central Hokkaido and is easily accessed by a 3 hour bus ride from New Chitose Airport.
Those who love groomers will love Furano. If you’re heading to Niseko, but want to experience a little more
of the Japanese ski resorts Furano is a really fun resort to check out – also great for the families. Also great
for the families. See page 19 for more information.
