Both resorts are known for consistent powder and great snow suitable for both skiers and boarders of any standard. Hakuba 47 has an excellent terrain park including a halfpipe and boardercross course. Night skiing is open at Goryu until 10pm. The terrain at Cortina is reasonably small compared to the nearby resorts. The real treat for skiers and snowboarders here is the tree skiing. Cortina usually receives more snowfall than other resorts so on a powder day people flock to Cortina. From Sapporo Chitose airport or Sapporo city: • 2.5 hours by train and bus - train to Kutchan and bus to Hirafu. ($$) • 3 hours by direct bus to Hirafu. ($) Niseko is a well established tourism destination with great access (once you have arrived in Sapporo), with direct buses leaving almost hourly during peak season. When flying from Australia you will need to catch an extra flight up to Sapporo, as opposed to accessing the resorts on the main island. Niseko is indisputably Japan’s number one international ski resort, with the highest number of foreign visitors and the best tourism infrastructure. The catalyst for all this is Hokkaido’s famously light and fluffy powder snow, delivered by air systems over Siberia and made possible by Niseko’s cold temperatures. If you are looking for a luxury ski holiday in Japan, Niseko is the destination for you with a plethora of modern Western accommodation available. Due to the large numbers of Australian tourists almost everything in town is in English, and most staff speak English (if they aren’t Australians themselves), making it extremely easy to get around town, order meals and organise extras such as ski hire, lessons and tours. Best time to go? Niseko enjoys a longer season than its counterparts on the main island of Japan due to its latitude, with consistent snowfall from early December to early April. The first two weeks of March are a great time to go, it is still generally snowing heavily and consistently, and most accommodation is at a 30% discount to their January rates. 13 The main ski areas in Niseko are Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono. They are all skiable on the one lift pass called Niseko United All Mountain Pass. HANAZO NO RESO NISEKO MT ANN UPURI Niseko Village Map Guests typically stay in Niseko Village or Hirafu.
