Giraffes
Giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth. They are about five
meters tall and can weigh more than one thousand kilograms.
Females are a little smaller than males. People thought for a
long time that giraffes were very quiet, but recently they have
discovered that most of the sounds they make are too low for
humans to hear.
Giraffes live in Africa, from Chad to South Africa. Giraffes
can live in grasslands, savannas, or open woodlands. They
prefer places that have a lot of acacia trees. Acacia trees are
their favourite food. They can eat around fifty kilograms of food
per day.
Giraffes don’t sleep very much. They usually sleep for about
15 minutes in twenty-four hours. Giraffes’ enemies are lions
and hyenas, but a giraffe can kill a lion with its powerful kick.
