LHC、今年 9 月の運用再開で正式決定
欧州原子核研究機構（CERN）は 9 日、昨年 9 月に冷却用ヘリウム
磁石（Dipole Magnets）と四極磁石（Quadupole Magnets）が損傷し
流出事故を起こして以来、停止状態が続いてきた大型ハドロン衝突

中国 通信衛星の故障でテレビ番組が一時中断
国家広播電影電視総局（国家広電総局）は 9 日午前 10 時 59 分
通信衛星「キン諾 3 号」と国家広電専用ネットワークを通じても伝送を
56 秒、次世代通信衛星「中星 6B」が故障、中央電視台（CCTV）、
行っているため、「中星 6B」故障中に全国各地で放送されている番組
中央教育電視台（CETV）および 23 省の衛星テレビのあわせて 150 番
に影響はなかった。今回衛星が故障し信号が中断、多くの視聴者に
組がすべて中断したと発表。中断した 150 番組は、午前 11 時 47 分
影響を与えた。これに対し関係部門は謝罪を表明。「中星 6B」は既に
03 秒から午後 1 時 11 分 17 秒の間に次々と放送を再開。衛星故障

中国の放送通信衛星「Chinasat 6B」で不具合、約 30 分間に渡って放送中継が中断
9 日正午にかけての約 30 分間、中国国内の衛星放送が 23 省 150
通信プラットホーム「Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000 C2」をベー

インド、2015 年を目標に独自の有人宇宙飛行を実施へ
印宇宙研究機構（Indian Space Research Organization）の G・マド
を示唆した現開発中「GSLV-III」ロケット。右側はほぼ同等能力を持

自開発の有人宇宙船を用い 2015 年をメドに有人宇宙飛行実施計
画を明らかに。ナイール局長によると、有人宇宙船は帰還モジュールと
サービスモジュールの 2 モジュールから構成され 3 人乗りとなる予定で、
低軌道上で 7 日間に渡ってミッション遂行できるとしている。打上げ用
有人ロケットには今年か来年中の初打上げで現在、開発が進められ
て い る 大 型 ロ ケ ッ ト 「 GSLV-III 」 を 用 い る 。 印 が 現 在 開 発 中 の
「GSLV-III」は静止軌道上に物資 4 トンを投入可能な、日本の
H2A-202 型ロケットとほぼ同じ能力をもつ大型ロケットだが、打上げコ
ストは 2000∼3000 万ドルで日米欧のオペレータが運用している大型ロ
ケット打上げコストの半分以下になる見通し。
印は最近まで宇宙開発分野では目立った動きはみせてこなかったが、
2000 年以降は独自開発の国産ロケット「PSLV」を使って国際商業打
上げ分野に参入。2008 年 10 月には更に「PSLV」を使って同国として
は初月観測衛星「チャンドラヤーン 1（Chandrayaan-1）」打上げに成

死傷者は 100 名を越える、オーストラリア南東部で発生した森林火災
画像は NASA の地球観測衛星「アクア（Aqua）」に搭載されている「中
解 像 度 分 光 放 射 計 （ Moderate

Spectroradiometer）」を使って撮影された現在、豪州南東部ビクトリ
ア州で延焼を続けている大規模な森林火災状況を示した衛星画像。
今日 9 日に撮影された映像。南半球に位置する豪州は現在、真夏に
相当し、連日 40 度を超える猛暑が続き、乾燥が進んでいた中で、火
災が発生し、火災の勢いは瞬く間に拡大。森林に隣接する住宅街の
死傷者数は、現時点で 180 名を越え、被害者数は豪州の森林火災
史上、最悪となった。この衛星画像では炎上部分が赤で着色されてい
るが、これは延焼箇所判別の人工着色で、実映像とは異なる。

四川大地震はダム誘発地震だった、英高級紙が異例の報道
2008 年 5 月 12 日に中国、四川省一帯を襲い 8 万人にも上る死者と
みを引起したことが、今回の地震につながったのでは」とする説も紹介。

ダム存在によって地震が誘発されるという考え方は昔からダム反対論
近くある三峡ダムに蓄えた膨大な貯水の重みが断層にひずみを与えた
者の間で指摘されたもので、必ずしも排除されるものではないが、四川
との考えが中国内専門家間で広まっていることが 3 日、英テレグラフ紙
大地震のような大地震発生原因とダム存在を結びつけることはかなり
報道により明らかと。三峡ダムは 1993 年着工した中国・長江中流域
突飛な考え方に近く、これまで専門家の間でこうした考え方を真っ正
の三峡に建設中の世界最大級の大型重力式コンクリートダム。2004
面から取上げることは少なかった。テレ紙報道が、独断専行型の印象
年から貯水開始し、2009 年竣工に向け最終段階に入っていた。四川
操作報道なのか、あるいは本当にダム存在が四川大地震を引起す原
省成都地理院の范筱（Fan Xiao）主任技術者は、テレ紙インタビュー
因なのか、三峡ダム建設そのものが中国国家プロジェクトでもあり、今
に応じ「この地域は地震多発地帯だが、この地域で過去にマグニチュー

西島和彦さん８２歳＝素粒子研究の第一人者
西島和彦さん８２歳（にしじま・かずひこ＝東京大名誉教授、京都大
学のグループを作った。５０年代、陽子や中性子など従来知られていた
名誉教授、素粒子論専攻）１５日、急性白血病のため死去。葬儀は
素粒子とは異なる性質のものが相次いで発見され、それらを「ストレン

文化勲章。

素粒子を分類し、秩序をあた
え、その本質を理解する時に
大きな役割を果たし、その後の
素粒子論発展の基礎を築い
たものです。以来、今日に至る
まで、同氏がこの分野に多くの
業績を挙げて、国内外素粒子
物 理 学 の 指 導 者 の 一 人 とし
て、その進歩に果たした貢献は
極めて大きなものです。

本学名誉教授の西島和彦先生が平成 15
年度の文化勲章を受章されました。西島先
生は 1926 年東京のご出身で本学物理教
室を卒業後、大阪市立大学、米イリノイ大
学で教鞭をとられました。その後、1966 年に
東京大学理学部物理学教室教授となられ
1986 年に京都大学基礎物理学研究所に
所長としてお移りになるまで本学の研究・教
育に尽力。1979-82 年には理学部長をお
務めになりました。
今回受章の対象となった「西島・ゲルマン」の法則は、1950 年
代に奇妙な粒子と呼ばれた Κ、Λ、Σ粒子等の一群の粒子
の振る舞いを、奇妙さ(ストレンジネス)と呼ばれる量子数を導
入、説明したお仕事で、よく知られています。「西島・ゲルマンの
法則」によれば、素粒子の持つストレンジネスを S、バリオン数を
B、アイソスピンの第三成分を I3 とし電荷を Q とするとこれらの
量の間には Q = e( I3 + S/2 + B/2 ) の関係が成立します。
ストレンジネスの概念は現在では素粒子のフレーバとして一般
化され、カラーと共に素粒子のもつ最も基本的な量子数とし
て、現代の素粒子物理学の中心的な概念を形成しています。
先生はストレンジネス導入のほか、場の理論における束縛状態
の記述や分散理論を用いた場の理論の再構成、さらに繰込み
群を用いたゲージ理論の分析等にも優れた業績を残されまし
た。また、先生は明快な教科書を書かれることでも良く知られて
お り 、 以 前 ベ ン ジ ャ ミ ン か ら 出 版 さ れ た 「 Fundamental
Particles」や「Particles and Fields」は院生の間で広く用いられ
ました。日本語教科書としては「場の量子論」（紀伊国屋書
店）等があります。
先生は 1989 年に学士院会員となられ、1993 年には文化功労
者に選出されました。理学系研究科・理学部を代表し、心から
ご受章をお祝い申し上げます。

SSTL WORKS WITH VIRGIN GALACTIC ON AIR LAUNCHED SMALL LAUNCHER
In a link up between SSTL a UK based small satellite manufacturer that recently became
part of the EADS Astrium space firm, and Virgin Galactic, the firms are now examining
how a small air launched two stage rocket could be built using Virgin Galactic’s
WhiteKnightTwo as its carrier aircraft first stage. The combined system could be used to
launch small satellites in the range of 50-200kg into a 400km polar orbit in a similar way
to the U.S. Pegasus system. That four stage rocket uses a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar
airliner as a carrier vehicle to launch small satellites. The proposal, if pursued, would mark
a return to space launching for the United Kingdom. While it has maintained a research
capability in the area via companies such as BAe Systems and Reaction Engines Limited,
Britain effectively withdrew from launching spacecraft in 1971 as it made its one and only
orbital launch on a Black Arrow launch vehicle.
Comment: While SSTL is now seriously examining this new launch system, it is perhaps
fortunate that Elon Musk, who previously owned 10% of the firm, is now no longer a
shareholder. This is because, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) which is Musk’s
main business interest, offers a competing small satellite launch capability via its low cost
Falcon 1 launch vehicle. SSTL and Virgin Galactic hope to offer flights at prices
significantly below Falcon 1.

る町に、神を恐れず、人を人とも思わぬ裁判官がいた。ところ
が、その同じ町にひとりのやもめがいて、彼のもとにたびたびきて、
『どうぞ、わたしの訴えをさばいて、わたしを守ってください』と願い
つづけた。彼はしばらくの間きき入れないでいたが、そののち、心
のうちで考えた、『わたしは神をも恐れず、人を人とも思わない
が、このやもめがわたしに面倒をかけるから、彼女のためになる裁
判をしてやろう。そうしたら、絶えずやってきてわたしを悩ますことが
なくなるだろう』。そこで主は言われた、『この不義な裁判官の言
っていることを聞いたか。まして神は、日夜叫び求める選民のため
に、正しいさばきをしてくださらずに長い間そのままにしておかれる
ことがあろうか。
