Notice from our English “Haiku” Club
ANE 英語俳句同好会では、脳の活性化の為に俳句を作り、また英語の俳句を日本語に訳したり、日本の俳句を
英語に訳して国際的な俳句作りを楽しみます。新老人の会本部(日本)で俳句の指導を担当しておられる俳人･木
下星誠先生に、オーストラリアからの投稿とご指導も認めていただきました。この機会に俳句を始めてみませ
んか? 俳句と翻訳の句は 6 月のフェデレーション･スクエアでのイベント、翻訳祭(The Gift of Light と同じ
く、The Light in Winter のお祭りの一部)で朗読されます。朗読は 6 月 17 日予定。
ANE’s is forming an English “Haiku” Club to help people learn how to enjoy creating and reading
“Haiku”. Creating Haiku is a great way to stimulate your brain. Club activities will also include
translating English Haiku to Japanese and Japanese Haiku to English. The Haiku poet, Seijyou
Kinoshita sensei in our head office agreed to help teach the ANE’s “English Haiku club”. It is a great
opportunity for you to start to learn Haiku though our club.
Our Haiku creations and translated Haiku will be read at the International Festival of Literature in
Translation (IFLIT), festival hosted by Federation Square – This is a part of The Light in Winter and
The Gift of Light - The festival will be held in June and the Haiku reading day is on the 17th of June.

The National Year of Reading - to make Australian a nation
of readers ～オーストラリア国内での識字率を高める～
2012 年は、オーストラリアで The National Year of Reading
– to make Australia a nation of readers を目指しています
。日本の識字率は 99％で、文盲の人は少ないのですが、オー
ストラリアでは移民、避難民の受け入れをしていて 46％の人
が英語を読めないのではなく母国語さえも読めない人がいま
す。母国語が読めない人が英語がすぐに「読める言葉」として
理解されることは無いでしょう。新聞が読めないだけでなく、
買い物に行ってもラベルが読めない、薬物や道端や建物の「注
意書き」や「危険」が読めないので、命にかかわる問題になり
ます。子供達を“Reading”に親しませる運動だけでなく、大人
も含めての“Reading”運動を促しています。
メルボルン大学の言語教育者は、オーストラリアの言葉の教育
が「劣化した」とレポートしています。理由のひとつは、昔は
“Phonics・音"で言葉をはじめに教えていたのですが、今は“つ
づり”と“発音”(whole Language) を始めから教えているの
で、子供達が混乱している傾向があるそうです。もう一度
“Phonics”教育ではじめにきちんと子供達の指導をすること
で、英語力の伸び方が違うと指摘する教育者達がいます。
もうひとつの理由は＜家庭内で活字、言葉を尊重する文化があ
るかないか＞も経済面、社会面で問題にかかわってきます。
Bellfield 小学校では 1996 年に John Fleming 校長先生が赴任
した時には 5 分の 4 の子供達が英語を読めませんでした。220
人の生徒の半数は片親で、５分の 1 の子供達が「英語を母国
語としない」家庭の 80％以上の親が失業中という状態でし
た。Fleming 校長先生は、教育長の指針に従わず、徹底して
“Phonics”教育を進めました。2003 年には Victoria 州の全州
識字率テストで、10 指以内に数えられる程の成果があり、言
葉が読めるようになったことで他の教科全般に進歩があったそ
うです。
言葉教育は、IQ には関係してなく、小学校に入学した時から
どのように言葉にかかわってきたかで 8 歳ぐらいで差が出てき
ます。この頃から語彙の数が増えてきて、15 歳前後になる
と、ますます大きな差になって「読めるか読めないか」「判る
かわからないか」が表れます。
Whole language の方法では、例を挙げると：
“I use soap to wash my face.”
Boy 1: “I use soap to watch my face.”
Boy 2: “ I use soap to clean my face.”
で、Boy 2 は意味が取れているので「間違っているとは教えな
い」そうです。リラックスして読むのが楽しければよいという
考え方をします。
現在アメリカでの研究では、子供達は一人ひとり<学び方＞が
違うので、どちらの方法がよいか悪いかではなく、その子供に
合った読み方、話し方を先生が見極めながら「読むことの楽し
さ」を判るようにしようと考えています。
携帯や iPod でメッセージを送る子供達はきちんと言葉を読め
なくなっているし、書けなくなっています。Spell Check で自
動的にスペルを直されるので、きちんとしたスペリングが出来
なくなっています。本屋さんがつぶれ、新聞も Internet で読
むから「買わない」世界の傾向の中で、Reading の持つ意味

reading both English and their native language. If they are unable
to read their native language, they have very little chance of
learning or reading English.
It is not just the fact that they cannot read books and newspapers,
signs, labels, etc. If they cannot read cautionary or warning
descriptions on medicines and road signs it could be hazardous or
even deadly in some situations. The program not only aims to work
with children, but also wants to work with and help adults to
improve their level of literacy.
A literacy teacher at Melbourne University reported that Australian
literacy levels have deteriorated. They believed, one of the reasons
could be that fact that “phonics” are not taught in schools any
more. Current literacy education is based around teaching only
spelling and pronunciation. This can result in some children
confusing or misunderstanding the meaning of some words. Some
educators believe that the teaching of “Phonics” should be brought
back to the school system to help strength our children’s literacy
levels.
Other reasons could be related to financial and social pressures or
issues. Some cultures just do not value a high rate of literacy. John
Fleming became the principal at Bellfield primary school in 1996. At
the time, 4 out of every 5 children were not able to read English.
Approximately half of the school’s 220 children had single parents
and one out of 5 children came from an ethnic background where
their native language was not English. Over 80% parents were also
unemployed. Mr Fleming ignored the educational guidelines of the
time and started to include the study of “Phonics” at his school. By
2003, the school has become one of the top 10 schools in Australia
in terms of their literacy levels. Another result was that ability of
students other areas of their schooling and in other subjects also
greatly improved.
Literacy levels do not relate directly to IQ levels, however the effect
of an improved literacy level starts to becomes clears from the ages
of 5-8. A child’s vocabulary becomes larger around 8 years old and
by the age of 15 there is a significant difference between the ability
of literate children and illiterate children.
Here is the current Whole Language method example;
“I use soap to wash my face.”
Boy 1: “I use soap to watch my face.”
Boy 2: “ I use soap to clean my face.”
Teachers won’t correct Boy 2 because he understood the meaning
of the sentence. The concept of the current education system is to
help children relax and enjoy reading.
USA study recommends teaching for each individual child’s needs,
and not deviating focus on what is good or bad.
In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number
of children using mobile devices to communicate with their friends.
Sending messages with those devices which often have spell check
features has resulted in children not being able to write and spell
words correctly. Many book shops have been forced to close, due
to the growth of the internet and the reduced buying of offline
printed materials. We can see it all around us every day, any people

西地区｢日本語教室｣からのお知らせ

ANE スポンサーの日本語教室が 4 月 19 日からスタートいたし
ました。生徒数は 23 名、幼稚園クラス、小学生クラス 2 クラ
スの 3 クラスで開講しました。ひらがなの読み書きに重点をお
いた、学習をめざしております。小学生クラスにはまだ空きが
ありますので(低学年)、ご興味のある方は、まずはお問い合わ
せ、見学にいらしてください。また、講師を希望の方の見学、
お問い合わせも大歓迎です。
参加費: $6 ($5 講師代プラス $1 場所代)

19 of April. We currently have 23 students and 3 classes - one
kinder aged class and 2 primary school aged classes. All classes
are focused initially on learning “Hiragana” especially writing and
identifying Hiragana. There are still some spare spots in our
primary school aged class (Prep, grade 1 and 2). If you are
interested in taking lessons you are welcome to visit our classes
first. We also welcome some willing volunteer teachers to visit
and help us with the classes as well.
