SolarEdge Inverter Compliance with HECO Fast Trip Requirement
Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) has introduced a Transient Over Voltage (TOV) mitigation requirement for
fast PV system tripping in cases of grid over-voltage, to prevent risks associated with these transient overvoltages.
To comply with this requirement, a fast-acting transformer switch may be used, or a compliant inverter. A
compliant inverter is an inverter that trips within 1 cycle (16ms) when the grid voltage exceeds 120% of
nominal grid voltage and has a time delay of at least 5 minutes before resetting.
SolarEdge inverters with CPU firmware version 2.640 and higher are compliant with this requirement. To
demonstrate this compliance, over-voltage scenarios were simulated in the lab and the inverter’s
disconnection time was measured.
Single Phase Inverter Measurements
Measurements were made for both a 240Vac grid and a 208Vac grid. For each grid three measurements were
made. The results below are those with the longest trip time.
