Die romanische Basilika San Zeno Maggiore wurde von

La romanica basilica di San Zeno Maggiore fu fondata
da re Pipino tra l'VIII e il IX secolo d.C. . La facciata in tufo
presenta un grande rosone (XIII secolo) detto Ruota della
Fortuna e un portale decorato da formelle di bronzo
cesellate con Storie del Nuovo e dell'Antico Testamento.
La pianta a croce latina ospita la chiesa riservata al popolo,
il presbiterio dei sacerdoti e la cripta sotterranea.
All'interno spicca un capolavoro della pittura
rinascimentale: la Pala di Andrea Mantegna (1457-1459)
raffigurante la Madonna con Bambino e Santi. Da ricordare
anche la croce stazionale, il battistero ottagonale di
marmo, la coppa di porfido e il “San Zen che ride” statua
policroma in marmo. Nella cripta è conservato il corpo di
San Zeno, patrono di Verona. Il chiostro in stile romanico
conduce al Sacello di San Benedetto e il campanile
presenta la caratteristica bicromia in tufo e cotto.

Jahrhundert erbaut. Die Tuffsteinfassade zeigt eine große
Fensterrose (XIII. Jh.), auch Ruota della Fortuna
(Glücksrad) genannt und ein Portal, mit Bronzekassetten
verziert, das Szenen aus dem Alten und dem Neuen
Testament darstellt. Der dreischiffige Grundriss, wie ein
lateinisches Kreuz, beherbergt die, der Bevölkerung
vorbehaltene, Kirche, die Chorkapelle der Priester und die
unterirdische Krypta. Im Innenraum beeindruckt ein
Meisterwerk der Frührenaissance: das Marien-Triptychon
von Andrea Mantegna (1457-1459). Die Darstellung der
Muttergottes im Kreise von Engeln und Heiligen.
Hervorzuheben sind ebenfalls das Prozessionskreuz (crux
stationalis), das achteckige Marmortaufbecken, der
Porphyrpokal und die mehrfarbige Marmorstatue von
“San Zen che ride”. In der Krypta sind die Reliquien San
Zenos, Schutzheiliger von Verona, aufbewahrt. Der
romanische Kreuzgang führt zu dem Sacello von San
Benedetto, und der Glockenturm weißt die Eigenschaften
des Zweifarbendrucks inTuffstein und Ton vor.
The Romanesque basilica of San Zeno Maggiore was
founded by King Pepin between the 8th and 9th century
A.D. . At the centre of the tufa stone façade there is a wide
rose window (13th century) called Ruota della Fortuna
(Wheel of Fortune) and the portal is decorated by
chiselled brass panels illustrating histories from the Old
and the New Testament.The basilica has a Latin cross plan
and it is divided into three parts: the Church for the
population, the presbytery for the priests, and the
subterranean crypt. Inside is preserved a masterpiece of
Renaissance painting: the Triptych altarpiece by Andrea
Mantegna (1457-1459) “Virgin and Child with Saints”. To
be mentioned also the processional cross (crux
stationalis), the octagonal marble baptismal font, the
porphyry cup and the polychrome marble statue of the
smiling San Zeno (“San Zen che ride”). The Crypt
preserves the tomb of San Zeno, patron saint of Verona.
The Romanesque cloister leads to the Sacello of San
Benedetto and the bell tower is characterized by the
polychromy of tufa stone and bricks.
