Professional background
1970-71 Earned baccalaureate in classical studies at the Campana Secondary School of Osimo
(Province of Ancona, Italy)
1976 (March 16th), Awarded university degree in sociology, with a final grade of 110/110 cum
laude. Defended a research thesis on "The Study of Attitudes towards Sexual Roles from Different
Analytical Perspectives". Faculty adviser: Dr. Mirilia Bonnes Dobrowolny, professor of social
psychology.
1982-83, Visiting Scholar in Sociology at the University of Harvard, Cambridge, Massachusetts,
under a scholarship from the Italian National Research Council (no. 203.10.18). In an academic
year at the Department of Sociology, William James Hall, of Harvard University studied healthcare
policies and the medical profession in advanced industrial countries, with a focus on the United
States and Great Britain
1984 University researcher with the Department of Economics and Business of the University of
Ancona, subject matter grouping no. 18
1988 Appointment as researcher confirmed with the Department of Economics and Business of the
University of Ancona, subject matter grouping no. 18. From 1 Nov. 1995 confirmed as researcher

economic sociology at the Department of Economics of the University of Ancona

of Economics in Ancona
From 2002 to 2004 sat on the Executive Committee of the SISS, or Italian Society of Sociology ad
Health, having been one of its founders

Research Interests
Overview
M. Giovanna Vicarelli has researched the political aspects of European health care organisation
over many years and particular research interest on the subject of medical professions and female
doctors. His major current research activity is 'Enhancing the role of medicine in the management
of European health systems: implications for control, innovations and user voice".
In the past, she has been involved in a number of large research projects about family, migrations,
gender studies
