The property, built in 1929, takes its name from Italian politician and Ambassador to the UK Dino Grandi, Count of Mordano. The property was heavily damaged during World War II and acquired from Count Grandi by the Government of Canada in 1950. A major renovation of the property was completed in the early 1980s at which point it became the official residence of the Ambassador of Canada to Italy. Set in a 2-hectare park, Villa Grandi consists of two buildings: the main villa and a caretaker’s cottage. It is bounded on the north-east by 3rd century BC Aurelian Walls and by Via di Porta Latina on the south-west. The 1,467 square-meter main villa is located in the center of the grounds and consists of four levels. The villa’s ground floor features representational areas including a large dining room, several reception rooms, a study, and a service kitchen. Bedrooms and private quarters are located on the first and second floors. All service rooms including a laundry room, professional kitchen, food pantry, wine cellar and storage rooms are located in the basement. Map Villa Grandi’s grounds feature centuries-old trees and orchards, as well as a tennis court, fountains, a small shed and a parking area. The two-floor caretaker’s cottage is located near the entrance on Via di Porta Latina.
