Ingegneria dei sistemi TRAINCONTROLLER® system On-board system designed for Light-Rail Transit system vehicles Traincontroller® is an on-board system, designed for Light-Rail Public Transport vehicles, that provides several functionalities for the system management and operation. Traincontroller® is compliant with the most recent European standards regarding electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and fire/smoke prevention. Traincontroller® can interface and control different on-board equipment, such as passenger information displays, stop announcement systems, ticket machines, radio, odometer, etc. Traincontroller® provides considerable improvements on the Public Transport service performance, especially in terms of vehicles punctuality, timetable compliance, efficiency of the on-board equipment, accuracy of the audio/video communications to passengers and diagnostics enhancement, with an effective improvement of the service and safety standards. The system is composed by the following main equipment: - SMARTRAINBOX, on-board computer and main component of the system for the peripherals management - VETERM, man/machine interface terminal for the driver - VECOM BOX, modem for the bidirectional short-range communication between vehicle and ground, that allows the routing operations and the tram priority along the crossroads - TRANSPONDER, underframe antenna for the short-range communication between the vehicle and the wayside sites (loops) - ACCESSORIES, such as handset phone and RF antennas The system includes a GPRS communication channel (UMTS) and a Wi-Fi channel to exchange data with the Control Centre, to download/upload data in depot or to allow a VoIP communication between the vehicle driver and the Control Centre. Smartrainbox Veterm Antenna Handset phone Vecom Box Transponder An additional GSM channel allows the Centre operator to directly call the driver or to send informative messages to passengers (as an alternative to a radio system or a VoIP system). Moreover the system is equipped with a CANbus interface, that allows real-time data exchange by means of a standard communication protocol OpenCAN, which is widely used in industrial and automotive applications. A GPS system provides the continuous localisation of the vehicle along the tramway, even in absence of the VECOM system. At last the availability of various communication ports Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, CANbus and Digital inputs/outputs, guarantees the interconnection with different on-board systems. The system provides the following functionalities: • Switch point command • Request of tram priority along the crossroads • Phone communication with the Control Centre • Improvement of the tramway service, in terms of punctuality of the vehicles and compliance with the timetables, totally integrated with the SmarTrams® system in the Control Centre • Local mode service management, by means of algorithms that run in the on-board Smartrainbox unit (in absence of a transmission channel with the Control Centre) • Continuous/self localisation of vehicles along the tramway • Management of the information for the passengers • Download and upload of the diagnostic data and timetables • Transmission of pre-coded messages between the vehicle and the Control Centre • Management of the external and internal information displays • Interconnection with other on-board devices Rev.0 Project Automation SpA - Viale Elvezia, 42 - 20900 Monza (MB) - Italy Tel. +39 039 2806.1 Fax: +39 039 2806.432 www.p-a.it Ingegneria dei sistemi Block diagram of the Traincontroller® System The following images show the block diagram of the TrainController® System, the available interfaces and the typical placement of the on-board equipment.
