What a wonderful country. Only in Italy you can find so many grapes varietals not found in any other part of the world. Some of the Italian grapes grow only in that specific region or town and can’t be grown anywhere else. You can have Cabernet from California, Australia or France but you can’t find a Pecorino grape outside of Abruzzo region or a Grillo grape outside of Sicily. Italy is without a doubt unique for the production of wine. All the love I have for the Italian grapes is shown on this list. Going through the list you will see a selection of quality wines that Italy can offer and I hope you will enjoy them all. Salute! The Wine Director The first Italian wines showed in these pages are from the northern Italian regions. It then moves to central Italy and into southern Italy. Lastly are wines from the two main islands, Sardegna and Sicily. I’m a lover of wines from this region. It’s not a coincidence then that I am presenting more wines from this region than from any other regions on the list. Tuscan wines are primarily made with Sangiovese grapes. Sangiovese is an impressive grape that changes according to the place where it grows: Brunello, made of Sangiovese Grosso found in Montalcino, Sangiovese used for Chianti, Prugnolo Gentile, which is a clone of Sangiovese used for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and Super Tuscan made with 100% Sangiovese. Wouldn’t you be impressed by such an extraordinary grape? I recommend the wines from Carpineta Fontalpino which are among the best of their kind: Chianti, Chianti Colli Senesi, and Super Tuscan. Villa Le Prata is a great producer of Brunello di Montalcino and it is a must try. The aromas and flavors come together quite nicely in this understated, elegant Brunello. What does it really mean? Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta made, for the first time, a wine that was considered out of the ordinary, SASSICAIA, the first Super Tuscan. From that point on every time a producer made a wine that was different from the regular Tuscan wines, people liked to call the wine a Super Tuscan; different from a Brunello, Chianti, or Vino Nobile. Super Tuscan can be made with several grape varietals or with only Sangiovese grapes. A great example of a Super Tuscan is the great Chianti Colli Senesi from Carpineta Fontalpino made with only Sangiovese grapes. This producer also features other great Super Tuscans: Do Ut Des and Dofana. 410 508 320 545 214 245 Poggio Alloro, San Gimignano Rosso, Sangiovese & Cabernet, 2009 (Organic) Mongrana, Sangiovese/Cabernet/Merlot, Querciabella, 2010 Il Bruciato, Cabernet/Merlot/Syrah, Tenuta Guado al Tasso, 2011 San Pio, Cabernet Sauvignon & Sangiovese, Mastrojanni, 2010 Modus, Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet, Ruffino, 2010 Volpolo, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Petit Verdot, Sapaio, 2011 45 50 60 65 65 66 Offers a well of black cherry, black currant and plum fruit, suffused with accents of sandalwood and baking spices. Balanced and light-footed, with a long aftertaste of fruit and spice. A modern, harmonious style. 304 DO UT DES, Merlot/Sangiovese/Cabernet, Carpineta Fontalpino, 2010 Dark and extracted, yet the tannins cover the black cherry, plum and chocolate flavors for now. Chewy in texture, this is for fans of the modern style. Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. 84 536 544 308 DO UT DES, Merlot/Sangiovese/Cabernet, Carpineta Fontalpino, 2009 DO UT DES, Merlot/Sangiovese/Cabernet, Carpineta Fontalpino, 2008 Sapaio, Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Frnac/Merlot/Petit Verdot, Sapaio, 2011 105 131 129 Thick and concentrated, this extracted red exudes blackberry, plum, oak spice and tobacco flavors, all backed by excessive force, with a long aftertaste of black currant and bilberry. 535 313 537 Giusto di Notri, Merlot/ Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc, Tua Rita, 2006 Giusto di Notri, Merlot/ Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc, Tua Rita, 2002 DOFANA, Sangiovese & Petit Verdot, Carpineta Fontalpino, 2007 Fabulous on the nose, with dark fruits and smoky, meaty undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish. There's a lovely richness in this one. 530 528 525 Il Blu, Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon, Brancaia, 2007 180 GUADO AL TASSO, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Syrah, Antinori, 2006 310 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, 2009 230 LUCE, Sangiovese & Merlot, Frescobaldi-Robert Mondavi, 2008 200 Antinori, “TIGNIANELLO”, Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc, 2009 210 50 & 50, Merlot & Sangiovese, Capannelle, 2005 250 534 527 447 150 200 145 A rush of jammy dark berries is the first sensation that emerges from the 2005 50 & 50 a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese made in partnership with Avignonesi. The 50 & 50 shows a bit more accessibility and sheer plumpness than the decidedly structured Solare. New leather, spices, chocolate, espresso and toasted French oak add complexity to this juicy, full-throttle red. 526 531 532 529 TESTAMATTA, Sangiovese, Bibi Graetz, 2009 SASSICAIA, Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc, Tenuta San Guido, 2007 SOLAIA, Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Sangiovese, Antinori, 2007 Fontodi, “FLACCIANELLO”, Sangiovese, 2006 270 430 530 550 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, Sangiovese & Trebbiano, Fontodi, 2001 (375ml) 90 Dolci 280 10 MARCHE Marche features the great wines of Fontezoppa. This producer works with indigenous grape varietals. The whole line is impressive but the unusual grapes, like the Vernaccia Nera, believed to be the Italian clone of the Grenache, is the one you will want to discover. This wine is not filtered or fined giving it intense fruity spiced notes, and a full, complex persistent bouquet with vegetable and herbal notes, and decidedly peppery finish. Dry and enveloping on the palate, with smooth tannin aftertaste and long fruity and herbal finish. 35 40 209 Marinè, Sangiovese CRU, Fontezoppa, 2007 Consistent bright ruby red, full and complex on the nose with notes of moss and a hint of mushrooms and truffles. It is a suggestive land, furrowed with vineyards carefully “cultivated” throughout the generations that climb up towards the peeks of the mountains, starting at the bottom of the valley dotted by fruit trees. A pioneer start, characterized by tenacity, self-will and many promises, kept throughout the years. Attilio Marzadro is the protagonist of this story, together with his sister Sabina. He understood how to cultivate his land to its best in order to obtain, from his vineyards, the pomace more suitable for the distillation of Grappas, becoming the “proprietor” of this centurial art. Attilio Marzadro grew up in the mountains, and wanted to pass on to his children this precious inheritance made up not only of intuition, enthusiasm and passion but also of wisdom, experience and a deep love for the land and its culture. The Marzadro family, now extended to three generations, kept its traditional inheritance intact with great commitment and professionalism, while seeking constant innovation. Behind this romantic aspect of recuperating and maintaining old traditions, Marzadro is in fact a dynamic company, continually up to date and evolving in order to exploit its potentials to a maximum as concerns preservation of the environment, while absolutely respecting the quality of the raw materials and processing systems. Grappa del Fondatore (White: Moscato & Chardonnay. Red: Teroldego, Marzemini & Merlot) 1.35oz (4cl) $9 A grappa distilled in the year 1995 when the founder, grandpa Attilio, used to personally choose the marc, looking for first quality stuff, and carefully attend to the distillation process. The secret of this grappa is in its precious taste, with all the flavours and scents of renowned marcs from Trentine black doc grapes. Le Diciotto Lune (White: Moscato, Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau. Red: Teroldego, Cabernet, Marzemino) 1.35oz (4cl) $10 This is an aged, high quality Grappa, which is emblematic of the culture, care and art of distilling. It is produced from the best marc of Trent, from selected vines, and distilled in the typical still. The Grappa is left to refine for over two years in small cherry, ash, oak and robinia casks, each of which lends its characteristic perfume, aroma, colour and flavour. Aging follows nature’s rhythms. Sowly, through time, the wood and Grappa evolve to create full harmony, while the final blend is expressed in the ethereal perfume and the round taste, with a hint of vanilla. Le Diciotto Lune is a high-profile Grappa, which suggests a variety of different situations for consumption, as an ideal opportunity to stress important and pleasant events. Le Giare Amarone (Red: Rondinella, Corvina, Molinara) 1.35oz (4cl) $12 A precious Grappa aged for 36 months in small oak casks. Rich and intense taste providing silky-smooth, long-lasting and pleasingly enveloping sensations. Marzadro dedicates “Giare” to commemorate the women who had suffered pain and injustice by being accused of sorcery in the Giare locality, in the province of Nogaredo, around 1646. 19
