International design workshop. Reading and designing the area of Lambousa-Karavas, Cyprus.
Contested heritage. Designing within the archaeological landscape
“Entre les temps différents de l'histoire, la longue durée se présente ainsi comme un
personnage encombrant, compliqué, souvent inédit”1
The workshop will have a duration of ten days, from November 18 to November 29, 2014,
at Girne American University, Faculty of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts, Cyprus. It will
be dedicated to the study and design of the area of Lambousa-Karavas, including the
archaeological area of Lapithos, the church and the Byzantine monastery of
Acheiropoietos and the church of Ag. Eulalios. The workshop is meant to introduce
students from different countries to the Architectural Heritage of Northern Cyprus, and its
transformation process. The case study chosen by the scientific committee for the
workshop, the Aχειροποίητος monastery in Cyprus shows the superimposition of different
constructions. The existing domed church, built with a central plan in late byzantine times
over the ruins of an early Christian basilica with three naves, was enlarged by the addition
of three successive narthexes and therefore transformed into a Latin longitudinal basilica.
The name Aχειροποίητος, literally made without hands, was referred most probably in the
origins of this church to an icon “made without hands”, so probably one of the numerous
images of Christ or of the Virgin that are referred in history. The name, through several
wrong writings and therefore misunderstandings survives to this day, telling us in an
immaterial way a part of the history of a building conceived, and therefore named, to
host this sacred image. The church is surrounded by the monastery, built in different
phases and different additions, bearing a long and very complex ownership history: The
sequence can be traced as beginning with the late antique basilica built in the V century
in the suburbs of the ancient city of Lapithos, all the way down to the transformation of the
site into military barracks in the 1970’. Recently the complex was assigned to Girne
American University and requires urgent preservation interventions. Therefore the
management of this site, hence the political situation of northern Cyprus, represents an
interesting case study on the ownership issue. The reconstruction of the diachronic
sequence of ownerships is therefore a prerequisite for the full understanding of the
different past phases of the building and hence essential for its preservation and
continuation into the future. As a matter of fact the history of ownership usually follows
very slow changes, and in some cases has given information also about the architecture.
Nevertheless the heritage management in Cyprus, for the complex political situation of
the island, bears more difficulties than in other UE countries, but we should consider that
every heritage site has someway a contested character.
Workshop organization
The students participating in the workshop will be divided into 9 groups, each will chose a
different theme to develop and will be monitored by one or more tutors, all the groups
and tutors will be supervised by the scientific coordinator. The formation of groups will start
with on online form (you will receive an invitation on a google doc file) to be compiled

before the beginning of the workshop and will be finalized on Wednesday nov. 19th. All
groups must produce for November 28th 4 horizontal A3 printed drawings and 12 color
power point slides to be projected the last day (10 minutes for each group) and an English
text of 10.000 characters explaining the work. (Formats of DWG files, Power point files and
DOC files will be provided). On November 28th from 15.00 to 17.00 for the GAU Friday
seminar, Reading and designing the Lambousa-Karavas area. The Monastery of
Acheiropoietos at the MILLENNIUM BUILDING, the results of the First international workshop
will be shown in public. The jury comprises Mehmet ADIL (Vice-Dean, Faculty of
Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Girne American University) ), Hossein Sadri (Dean, Faculty
of Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Girne American University), Kutsal Ozturk (Faculty of
Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Girne American University), Senem Zeybekoglu Sadri
(Head, Department of Interior design, Faculty of Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Girne

Architecture, Design & Fine Arts, Girne American University. Those students that will
produce high quality and particularly brilliant results during the workshop might ask to
continue their work as a graduation, master, specialization or PhD thesis.
The design
Within the monastery several different themes can be addressed:
1. recognition of the damage and conceptual design of implementation of safety
measures
2. architectural reading and design of the continuation of the monastic building
3. designing a system to exhibit archaeological findings inside the monastery buildings
4. survey of the buildings (with different techniques)
5. design of a garden inside the monastery site
6. design of the signage system and corporate identity of ICHS
7. design of paths and open spaces and lighting inside the monastery
8. landscape reading and design of the spaces surrounding the monastery
9. survey and documentation of mosaics, paintings and other relevant
archaeological artifacts
Each group of students will be working, under the supervision of the scientific coordinator ,
with one or more tutors. The themes have been proposed by the Faculty of Architecture
and the International Centre for Heritage Studies, all these themes are really required for
the monastery site and some of them in the future could be built. During the workshop
other GAU courses may be held inside the monastery to facilitate cultural exchange.
Other materials
Survey dwg drawings of the monastery, pdf of literature on the topic, other maps and
plans will be provided using a dropbox public link.
