Curriculum Vitae
Curriculum Vitae
Spyridon Katsanos was born in Agrinio (Greece) in 26th March 1974. He graduated from
Polikladiko high school of Agrinio in 1992 and he studied Medicine in the University of
Ioannina where he obtained his medical diploma in 2000. After a twelve month service
as a physician in the health center of Kanalaki followed by a fourteen month period of
compulsory service in the Greek army as a medical doctor, he undertook his Internal
Medicine training in Corfu General Hospital, Greece for two years. The following four
years he completed his Cardiology training in KAT hospital Athens, Greece. As a cardiologist he worked for eight months in the heart failure unit of ATTIKON University Hospital
of Athens, Greece. He was awarded by a national Hellenic Cardiology grant and moved
to Leiden, Netherlands for one year fellowship in imaging research under the mentorship of prof. Dr. Jeroen Bax and Dr. Victoria Delgado. His fellowship was then continued
for two more years by the support of second grant from the Hellenic Cardiology Society.
His main research field included imaging for transcatheter aortic valve implantation,
results of which are presented in this thesis book. He has also a special interest in cardiac
computed tomography, periprocedural transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac biomarkers and clinical managing of heart failure patients.

I would like to express my gratitude to professor Gerasimos Filippatos, who has introduced me to medical research and recommended me for a fellowship in Leiden, opening
new frontiers for me as cardiologist. I thank him for his gentle help and his discrete support through my effort. I would also like to thank my former director Dr. Dimitrios Babalis
and my colleague Dr. Nikolaos Kafkas from KAT Hospital Athens for their trust in me, the
medical knowledge that I have gained from them and their overall assistance.
The cardiology department of Leiden has overall given to me the opportunity for a
wonderful experience that will certainly affect my development in cardiology and in
life. I would like to thank Philippe Debonnaire and Nina Ajmone-Marsan for their kind
hospitality, Darryl Leong for his valuable statistical help, and Emer Joyce for enduring me
as her neighbor for almost two years. Also many thanks to Vasileios Kamperidis who has
completed the task of Emer and succeeded in this difficult endeavor. Ellen and Pauline
have also made my everyday life in the department more interesting and easier. As for
the Dutch fellows, Philippe van Rosendael, Georgette Hoogslag, Ulas Hoke, Michiel de
Graaf, Mand Khidir, Madelien Regeer and Ibtihal Al-Amri, they have always been there
for me when I needed them and really made me appreciate the value of team work. My
sincere thanks to the kind technicians of the echocardiography department.
Finally I would like to thank my family: my father Mixalis, my mother Alexandra and
my sister Panagiota who have encouraged me during my stay in Leiden. Many thanks to
my friends Panagiotis, Loukas, Marisevi and patera Ioil who were always accompanying
me in my effort.
Thank you!
