Van den Born and Nijboer lines

Van den Born's: One line Jack Vanden Born (b. 1943) April 7, 1992, revised July 2014. Peter van den Born’s (b. 1937) genealogical work, done mostly in the Arnhem archives, has identified our earliest known ancestor in the "van den Born" line as Jacob Jans (c. 1641-‐1684). He may have been the son of Jan Jacobs in de Maet (b., c. 1610) according to the investigations of Peter’s nephew, Peter Vermaat. Jacob Jans Jacob was born in Renkum, probably in 1641 and subsequently married Neeltje Jacobs (c. 1648-‐1733) about 1670. They lived in Renkum at the corner of Dorpstraat and Veerweg. A huge paper factory now lies to the south of the main road; and, a few metres further south the Neder Rijn River flows west. Three children were born to the couple: Jan (b. 1675), Cornelis (b. 1676), Jacomina (b. 1677). Peter found various documents with respect to Jacob Jans in the Arnhem archives. In one document, Jacob functions as the “onderschout,” a kind of court official helping the schout by doing the collections for whatever fines were levied or other low level elements of the schout’s tasks. The name at the bottom of the document reads “Jacob Jansen.” Another document shows the 1679 purchase of a piece of land close to Renkum (named the “Patacker”) by “Jacob Jansen” and “Naeltien Jacobs.” (Consistent spelling was not the order of the day at that time—Jacob Jans, Jacob Janse, Jacob Jansen; Neeltje, Naeltien, Neeltjen…) They probably grew tobacco on the Patacker. Further, it is likely that Jacob and Neeltje either bought or otherwise came into possession of three more parcels of land, although some of them may have come to Neeltje in her second marriage. In 1684 Jacob Janse was included in the summary of the membership of the “schutterij” of “Onze Lieve Vrouw”—a cloister for Roman Catholics. A “schutterij” was a voluntary city guard or militia, a precursor to local police forces, like the armed men pictured in Rembrandt’s “Night Watch.” They were the protectors of a town—protectors against attack or revolt, or fire. While voluntary, the officers were appointed by the government. But members had to pay dues and purchase their own equipment. I suspect an attraction for joining was not only in fulfilling civic duties, but also in the possibilities of further appointments. But, a schutterij could also function like a chapter of the Canadian Legion, where the pleasure is that of sharing drinks. Maybe Jacob Jans came to be an onderschout by virtue of his membership in the schutterij. Jacob died in 1684, aged about 43. Neeltje soon married Cornelis de Beet and together they had five children born between 1684 and 1692, so a total of eight children for Neeltje. In 1735, after Neeltje’s death, the four parcels of land were sold for 121, 190, 470, 302 gulden and the house in Renkum for 1360, a total of ƒ2443—a tidy sum. The daily salary of a land worker was about 20 stuivers (i.e., one gulden). Peter also learned that Neeltje Jacobs had two brothers who owned parcels of land on “de Born,” the piece of land which is the source of our family name. It’s a small area (about 50 hectares, i.e., about 125 acres) 5.5 km west and a bit north from Renkum, thus, between Wageningen and Bennekom on the north side of Kielekampsteeg and on both sides of Bornsesteeg. The middle picture has Pe van den Born walking south on Bornsesteeg. (23 May 2014). The land on the left (west) had an altitude of three metres on my Garmin GPS, and on the right (east) four metres. The centre of Bennekom, about one kilometre to the right had an altitude of eight metres. Neeltje’s two brothers, Willem and Cornelis, came into possession of the parcels, probably by inheriting them from their father. In the Arnhem archive, Pe van den Born found references to Jacob Willems van Heelsum (Heelsum is on the eastern side of Renkum) who possessed parcels of land previously owned by "Derck Cornelissen op den Born." Jacob Willems was the father of Neeltje Jacobs, and likely was related to Derck Cornelissen op den Born. Pe is confident that Jacob Willems had four children: Willem Jacobs, Cornelis Jacobs, Neeltje Jacobs (the wife of Jacob and the mother of Jan) and Hilleken Jacobs. He has clear evidence that Willem and Cornelis are brothers and that Neeltje and Hilleken are sisters, but not specifically that all four are brothers and sisters. But he is confident they are because of various documents that more or less imply it to be the case. De Born has a long history: Peter and his brother-‐in-‐law Arend Vermaat saw documents dating from 1430 with the name “de Born,” “op den Born,” and “van den Born” in connection to it. The word “born” could mean either a wet area or a border area. Both conditions applied to the piece: It could be wet from water draining into the area from the east and upwelling in the grass, but it was also midway between Wageningen and Bennekom, a border area. Jan Jacobs Jan Jacobs, (1675-‐1743), the oldest son of Jacob Jansen, married Jenneken Hendricks van Bleek (c. 1677-‐
1752), a girl next door in Renkum, in the late 1690’s. They had three children: Nieske (c., 1700), Reinder (c., 1702), Cornelis (b. 1706) Cornelis became our forefather. Like his father, Jan joined the Renkum schutterij in 1696. In the treasurer's books of the Renkum schutterij, Jan signed his name as "Jan Jacobs." Jan Jacobs must have been an affable sort of fellow because he was able to accumulate a wide variety of debts. ("Hij barstte van de schulden," wrote Peter.) He borrowed from the church diaconate (who, like the old Catholic bishops, were land owners in the Netherlands.) He bought 1/6 of a house from his brother for 75 gulden. In 1730 Jan was treasurer of the schutterij and signed the books on completing his term. He did not, however, bother to turn over the remaining funds, which were still being sought from him six years later. According to the records Peter van den Born found, Jan’s daughter, Nieske, was registered as a member in the Renkum church as Nieske van den Born on April 1, 1722 after doing profession of faith; not “Nieske Jansen” as would have been more common. A couple of years later, her younger brother Reinder, was registered as “Reinder Jansen.” Where did this last name come from? Why “van den Born?” Nieske’s father and mother lived near the cloister of Onze Lieve Vrouw in Renkum, half a kilometre east of her grandparents, Jacob and Neeltje. Why not simply Nieske Jansen? What inclined Nieske to refer to herself as “van den Born?” Pe leans to the idea that Nieske’s grandmother Neeltje somehow influenced Nieske and Cornelis to begin using the “van den Born” name. Nieske and her brother Cornelis’s great-‐uncle Cornelis (Neeltje’s brother) lived across the street from Neeltje and owned land on de Born. Or, could Niekse have visited her grandmother frequently and become friendly with Neeltje’s brother, Cornelis? (I do not know the birth date or death date of Cornelis Jacobsen, but his sister Neeltje was born in 1648, so assuming a birth date between 1640 -‐ 1650, in 1715 he might have been 75 when Nieske was 15.) Might Niekse and Cornelis have walked to de Born together, maybe to do a little farm work with the elderly Cornelis? (In May 2014 Pe and I easily walked the 5.5 km in an hour.) Or, could Jan have farmed on de Born with his uncle Cornelis? Maybe Nieske and Cornelis helped when they were old enough. It seems to me that a fairly powerful force would have been necessary for Nieske, Cornelis and their father Jan to begin using the “van den Born” descriptor and name. No one was required to adopt a family name, and the more common style of naming in Renkum at that time was to use patronyms. In England surnames did not come into usage until medieval times. The Norman conquest of 1066 introduced the practice to England. And, by 1400 most English families had adopted the use of hereditary surnames. In fact, by the 12th century, the use of a second name had become so widespread that, in some places, it was considered vulgar not to have one. The Statute of Additions, passed during the reign of Henry V in the early fifteenth century, gave full legal recognition to English surnames. In 1464, during the reign of Edward IV, the recognized insufficiency of given names for distinguishing individuals led to this first statute requiring the use of surnames. In the 16th century the Dutch nobility also began using permanent surnames, a practice that the general population gradually followed. These permanent surnames could be adopted from family patronyms, place names, descriptive traits, or occupational names. During this transitional period, a person could be known by his or her patronymic name, a permanent surname, both names together (where the patronym would be used as a sort of middle name), or they could alternate between the patronym and the surname in the records.By the 1600s, Dutch people began to turn their patronymic name into modern last names. Thus a Jan Hendricksen (Jan, the son of Hendrick) gave his son the surname Hendricksen instead of Jansen. However it may be, Nieske was listed with the “van den Born” name in 1722. Nieske’s brother Cornelis signed himself as “Cornelis Jansen van den Born” in 1730 when he signed up in the schutterij. And in 1731 their father Jan also signed his name as “Jan Jacobsen van Den born.” His handwriting skill was not well-‐developed. It is through Cornelis that the name comes down to us. Jan (Jacobs) van den Born died in 1743, “poor as church rat,” according to Peter. His sons paid a debt of 145 gulden in 1785, i.e., forty years after their father’s death. Cornelis “Jansen” van den Born Jan Jacob's son, Cornelis Jansen van den Born (c. 1706-‐1792), became a carpenter in Bennekom, and fathered 15 children during his lifetime! He married Nieske Gerrits (1707-‐1763) in 1732 and they received 10 children in the years 1733-‐1753. In 1739, the records show, Cornelis purchased three "schepels" (1450 m2) of land near Bennekom, and by 1758 he owned several pieces of land in the area. His wife, Nieske, died in 1763. Three years later, on June 6, 1766, Cornelis, 60 years old, married 29 year old Sophia Van Binsbergen. Together the couple produced five children, the last born on Feb. 18, 1778. Wow! Willem van den Born Cornelis' fourth child, Willem van den Born, (1739-‐1808) developed our family line further. Like his father, Willem married twice: first to Maaijtjen Everts of Arnhem, then to Geertruij Jans of Voorthuizen. With their help, he reared seven children. At some point during his life, Willem moved to a mill half way between Nijkerk and Putten for which he paid rent (pacht) to the honorable Mr. Goldstein-‐-‐lord of the manor Oldenaller. Evert van den Born The oldest son of Willem, Evert van den Born, (b. 1770) worked at the mill with his father but lived in Nijkerk. He married Gijsbertje Jans of Nijkerk. I do not have any stories from Peter about this man's occupation or land holdings. Willem van den Born The oldest son of Evert and Gijsbertje van den Born, Willem van den Born (1795-‐1853), moved to Huizen about ten miles west of Nijkerk and in 1818 married Evertje Vlaanderen, an orphan since her early youth. Willem came to be called "Woeste Willem” of “Huizen," wild Bill of Huizen. His wife's grandmother operated the family mill as best she could, i.e., not very well. (The mill is pictured on the lithograph John Vandenborn has on the wall of his house in Busby.) But Willem gradually took over the operation and by dint of hard work and frugal living paid off the debts. Willem and Evertje produced ten children in Huizen. The last child, Jan van den Born (1837-‐1913, my great-‐grandfather) grew up there. Willem van den Born died in 1853, i.e., when his son Jan was 16 years old. Perhaps an epidemic of some kind struck the area since Willem died on August 9 and his 21 year old daughter Evertje died on Aug. 11. Later, Jan moved to Lage Vuursche to begin work at another mill, probably in the later 1860's. I presume he worked at the mill his father operated before that. But in the Lage Vuursche he met Hilke Schriever, a servant girl with the lady Drakenstein, a local notable. He not only met her, the two of them got along so well that she became pregnant in the fall of 1871, a fact that troubled Jan the remainder of his life. Both were in their middle thirties, hardly spring chickens. I don't know the economic situation that had brought Hilke from Germany to Lage Vuursche or where in Germany she had come from. The marriage became reasonably successful and the two continued working the mill for some years. But it didn't go all that well. American grain began coming to Europe in that period and it seems likely that the local grain-‐
feed economy came under pressure. Thus in the spring of 1886 Jan and Hilke van den Born moved to Voorthuizen. In May 1886 Jan van den Born was registered as member of the Voorthuizen Hervormde Kerk by Rev. Willem van den Bergh. This church became the second congregation to split away from the main reformed denomination in the Abraham Kuyper-‐led-‐movement called the Doleantie. In January 1890 Jan joined the Voorthuizen Gereformeerde Kerk, after the group lost possession of the building where the split began. The membership shift linked Jan and many of his descendants to the Kuyperian movement in terms of the Gereformeerde Kerk and the Christian Reformed Church. I saw both the 1886 signature and the 1890 signature in the church minute books in Voorthuizen and Barneveld in March 1992. The Voorthuizen Hervormde Kerk minute books are kept in church and the Voorthuizen Gereformeerde Kerk minute books are in the archives of Barneveld city hall. Willem van den Born (1872-‐1943, my grandfather) was the first-‐born son of Jan and Hilke van den Born. His first fourteen years were spent in Lage Vuursche where he would have attended school; he did not go to school in Voorthuizen. Willem had two sisters—Johanna and Gezina and a younger brother who died at age 6. Willem was handsome; Gezina was also attractive, though less so than she herself thought, according to Peter van den Born. In Voorthuizen, Jan & Hilke rented a house, took in boarders and did laundry to make economic ends meet. The house still stands today, transformed into a restaurant called "De Punt." I think their two daughters helped in that enterprise while Willem travelled to work in the area. Willem signed up as a mill hand wherever he could. Labour contracts of this sort were normally for one year and all of them ran out on the same date. Willem moved from employer to employer quite often, likely looking for higher wages. Board and room was included with such agreements. With his work in various mills, Willem became quite skilful with maintaining and operating them. At some point, in the later 1890's I think, Willem began to work for a milk factory (a creamery) and feed grinding mill near Terschuur about 8 km west of Voorthuizen. The milk factory owners had purchased a steam engine to turn the cream separators and thought that it could also turn grain grinders. Willem was employed to operate the grain milling part of the enterprise. He continued his work there and on May 20, 1902 married Gijsje Doppenberg, a girl from the Voorthuizen area. Willem and Gijsje had seven children—Johannes Jacobus van den Born, (Feb. 27, 1903-‐Nov. 8, 1980), Aaltje, (b., July 16, 1904-‐) and five others, the last born in 1913. Aaltje is our Tante Aal who lived in Lethbridge, Alberta. Grandfather Willem van den Born remained a workman in Terschuur until Sept. 1920 when he purchased the business. My father was 17 then and attended a business school in Amersfoort learning bookkeeping. The period from 1902-‐1920 must have been a fairly poor time for Willem, Gijsje and family. I would think that the first five years of owning the business must also have been difficult. In 1920 my father was still in school. After school and in the summers, he would have been busy helping produce feed and distributing it. Two younger brothers Jan (b., Nov. 1905) and Jacob (b., Nov. 1906) did not continue school beyond the normal grades 1-‐6. A fourth brother Gerrit was born in 1910. But my father was encouraged to continue in school—he was smart, or so his father presented him to others. That favoured presentation was not well-‐received by my father's brothers and sisters. To complicate the family structure further, my father served in the armed forces in 1921 & 1922 and learned to give orders. I would guess that the decade in the twenties was not all that happy in the van den Born house in Terschuur. The feed business matured, but the three brothers and my father stayed away from each other more than working together. I would think that everyone was pleased when my Dad and Mother married in 1930. My father moved to Rhenen in 1929 where in anticipation of his marriage he had purchased a mill with the help of his father's co-‐signature on a bank loan. The purchase price was 14,000 gulden. Jan, Jacob & Gerrit continued to work with their father Willem in the feed business in Terschuur while my Dad developed a business in Achterberg, a village just north of Rhenen. The decade of the thirties was not good economically, but animals needed feed whether or not there was a depression. I think my father did all right in Achterberg. Then the war came-‐-‐ very upsetting and it led to our family's immigration to Canada in May 1949. Ancestry of grandmother Gijsje Doppenberg (1874-‐1944) Tijmen Dercks Dobbenberg ( -‐1774) m. He fathered at least one son—Aart. (It appears that the family name “Nijeboer” or “Nieuwboer” was in use in the Apeldoorn area at this time. But it was Willem’s grandson, also named Willem, who adopted that family name in 1812.) •
Aart Willemsen, born c., 1713 in Apeldoorn. Aart Willemsen (1713-‐1760) was born in Apeldoorn. His father moved to the Putten area shortly after Aart’s birth. Later, Aart married Grietje Jansen (1730 – 1761) on Dec. 12, 1750 in Putten. Together they had four children. Aart died ten years later. His wife, Grietje, then married Gerrit Koopman on Aug. 03, 1761 and bore him a child, Josijntje, thirteen days later, i.e., on Aug. 16, 1761. Grietje died after that, sometime before the end of the year. • Jan Aartsen van de Broek (Jan. 24, 1751 – March 3, 1782) • Geertruid Aartsen (April 3, 1753 – ?) • Teunisje Aartsen (Sep. 02, 1755 – ?) • Willem Aartsen (Nijeboer), May 08, 1757 – Oct. 08, 1833 Willem Aartsen (May 08, 1757 – Oct. 08, 1833) was born near Putten, and professed his faith in the Lord in Putten at age 18. He was most likely a day-‐labourer in his early manhood, but on March 23, 1803 he married Gerritje Gerrits Wakker from Ermelo, and once married, he worked steadily on a farm just west of Putten, near Hoef, from 1802-‐1808. He apparently then rented, and, possibly, bought the farm called “Rouwendaal” in the years 1808-‐1814. His wife, Gerritje, had died in 1808 during the birth of their fourth child, Gerrit. Interestingly, on Aug. 08, 1812, in Ermelo, Willem adopted the family name Nijeboer. The new Napoleonic codes of the time required citizens to have a family name. So Willem became known as Willem Nijeboer. As can be seen below, various spellings of names, maybe of many Dutch words, were acceptable at the time. •
