Synopsis
‘Three centuries in a nutshell’ tells the history of the Draaisma family the author, Anthony
Draaisma (Ton), belongs to. Starting with Sipke Sienes (1705 - 1776), farmer at Doniaga,
the story quickly moves on to Sneek, to his eldest son, Siene Sipkes (1765 - 1825). It is he
who, in 1811, adopts the Draaisma name. After his draaier’s - potter’s - profession. Three
of his sons follow him in his trade. The fourth one, Wijpkje (1807 - 1849), ancestor of the
Draaisma branch on which the story will focus from then on, becomes a home teacher.
Jacobus (1831 - 1896), Wijpkje’s son, exchanges Sneek for Amsterdam, where he, as a
tailer, doesn't do as well as he had hoped. His son, Jacobus Martinus (1872 - 1941), a
skilled confectioner, does quite a lot better. Staas (1910 - 1984), Jacobus Martinus’
youngest son, chooses Arnhem over Amsterdam, after a remarkable inbetween. When
Staas’ son Anthony (Ton) (1942) leaves Arnhem in 1962, the author concludes his family
history. Told to his grandchildren, provided with many photographs, his story underlines
on a passionate way how great gift of life it is to know our roots.
