Seminar targets design integrates with
agencies.
PantoneLIVE™
GMG and Epson are collaborating to host a Design
Agency Seminar to show designers how they can cure
their color control headaches and save valuable time,
while keeping costs down and removing inaccuracies
from the design realisation process. The seminar
will be held at Epson’s UK headquarters near Hemel
Hempstead, Hertfordshire, on March 12th 2014 where
they will be joined by global branding and packaging
design company
Elmwood to
demonstrate ‘Color

GMG OpenColor and ColorProof customers now have
immediate and seamless access to the PantoneLIVE
cloud to provide highly accurate color proofs. The
integration allows GMG customers to work globally
using the same database and to generate spot colors
that meet PantoneLIVE color standards and brand
owners’ specifications quickly. PantoneLIVE is a cloudbased, color management service that now maintains
22 generic packaging-relevant color libraries for carton,
flexible packaging and label applications. “PantoneLIVE
gives highly accurate definitions of the spot colors that
customers want, and GMG OpenColor and ColorProof

THE BIG GREEN
TICK THAT
SPEAKS ANY
LANGUAGE.
Remote proofing has been talked
about for decades, but only GMG
can make certified, color-accurate
proofs anywhere in the world in
minutes a reality. Here’s how.
REMOTE PROOFING
Designed
in LA
What is remote proofing?
Remote proofing is the process of digitally sending
a file anywhere in the world, and outputting it as a
predictable, constant and colour-perfect proof
in minutes.
It can be at a single location.
It can be multiple locations.
In the same city.
On the other side of the world.
At whichever stage of the design to print workflow –
brandowner, designer, prepress company or printer –
having an identical color-certified proof to approve is
good for business.
Approved
at client HQ
in Cape Town
Printed in
Sao Paulo
REMOTE PROOFING
Clients, brand owners, and
publishers are always looking to
save money on their proofing costs.
By eliminating couriers from the
process approvals are significantly
quicker. Without the cardboard
tube and courier, proofs get there
more than a week earlier and aren’t
at the mercy of delayed aircraft,
heavy traffic or human error.
REMOTE PROOFING
Different ways of sharing the file
1. Job Export between different ColorProof
clients
Where custom ProofStandards, Spotcolors, scaling,
nesting or cropping is manually applied to a file in
a ColorProof Job. Using the Job Export will ensure
that no changes are made on a remote ColorProof
system – Example: 1 bit files for Flexo printing.
2. Delivery of PDF files to different ColorProof
clients via “Hotfolders”
Ideal for agencies and publishers, data transfer is
done typically via the internet using FTP or other
web services. The GMG Printer Calibration ensures
that a hard proof is visually identical using the same
proof standard on different sites and systems.
The GMG CoZone Solution
• The prepress, agency and client
share their projects in the cloud
using GMG CoZone
• The agency uploads the PDF to
CoZone and sees the printing status
in real time
• The publisher gets an automated
information that the proof has been
printed and can approve the print
right away
• The prepress can keep an easy eye
on accounting
3. Jobs and Files sharing in the cloud that can
be delivered to any ColorProof Client
Ideal for job approval processes among different
parts in the design/creation-2-production chain.
REMOTE PROOFING
What if the receiver has no color management skills?
As the entire job content is transferred – the files,
the profiles and the parameters in a Job Container
– the receiver needs no prior color management
knowledge or expertise as the system is controlled
remotely from the senders site.
GMG ColorProof will automatically load the Job
Container on the receivers site, check if the system
is calibrated etc. and output the proof. It then
verifies it with the embedded measurement device
and prints the label on the Proof. Where required, a
report gets sent back via email on the results of the
Media Wedge with a preview of the Job.
GMG ColorProof takes out all the subjectivity when
looking at the color. This is important as one man’s
Navy Blue is another man’s Ultramarine.

The sender and receiver have a ColoProof system
1) A job is created with all settings required
2) The job is exported – the user can define the security level such as password or allowance to change parameters after job import
3) All content of the job is saved into one file
4) Now the job-file is ready
5) The job can now be sent to a receiving site. This can be done via FTP or email
6) When receiving a job, the file is automatically opened
7) According to job parameters and files a local job is created automatically without manual interaction at the receiver
8) GMG ColorProof will output the proof and verify it with the embedded measurement device and prints the label on the Proof. A report with the results is sent to the sender
The receiving GMG system acts virtually like a

Matthews finds
their remote
proofing solution
When Matthews
received designs from
clients, operators were
responsible for ensuring
that artwork for repro
print production could
be separated correctly.
Proprietary proofs were
produced and sent to
clients by overnight
courier to be marked up,

— a costly and timeconsuming process.
Matthews installed a
remote inkjet proofing
station at each brandowner’s office — one that
could easily and reliably
color-manage and prepare
files. Most important
was print quality
accuracy—both color
and dot structure. Often,
reproducing the highlight

address this key point,
a GMG ColorProof
system was installed.
The software drives

NEW YORK
THE ELMWOOD
NETWORK BEGINS
TO SYNCHRONISE
ITS COLOR.
“Color is one of the most important element to a brand’s strength
in communication across all its assets. Identifiable color integrity in
the reproduction of these assets needs to be set at an early stage.
By using the powerful GMG tool we can assure the replication and
quality our clients deserve.”
Peter Aldous, Creative Services Director at Elmwood
Global branding and packaging design
company Elmwood has offices in London,
New York City, Singapore and Melbourne.
Working with blue-chip international
brands such as ASDA, Anchor, Durex,
Soreen and McCain, clearly accurate and
consistent color rendering is a crucial
aspect of the company’s service. The
company says its recent installation of
GMG FlexoProof and GMG ProofControl
has revolutionised its digital proofing
capabilities. Increasing color accuracy and
proof-to-proof consistency has compelled
Elmwood to begin implementing GMGpowered Epson WT7900 proofing systems
across its offices worldwide.
“Prior to installing GMG ColorProof, one
of our biggest issues was the amount of
resource we needed to produce consistent
color,” continues. Aldous “Our previous
RIP / color management solution could not
give us the quality that we – and our clients
– expected, so there was a lot of to-ing and
fro-ing manually tweaking output settings
to achieve the required output. What we
needed was a system that could give us the
quality that we needed faster, without as
much manual intervention, day in and day
out.”
Elmwood invested in GMG FlexoProof
and GMG ProofControl to address its
color management and output issues.
GMG FlexoProof is a color proofing and
calibration application designed for the
specific requirements of the packaging and
label printing industry. Featuring halftone
digital proofing of flexographic / package
print jobs, FlexoProof ensures accurate
and consistent proofing output regardless
of print device, color space or substrate.
FlexoProof includes the GMG SpotColor
Editor for precise and repeatable color
matching of spot colors.
GMG ProofControl is a fast, tangible
way to be assured that proofs are being
produced to a measurable, predefined
standard by incorporating target values from
international industry standards such as
ISO, PSR Gravure, SWOP and GRACoL.
“The results have been fantastic,” says Peter.
“Being able to quickly and easily work
to a predefined industry standard such as
Fogra and ISO 12647 has increased color
accuracy and given us the confidence to
produce identical proofs whether they’re
needed the same day, or a year later.
Using GMG technology has allowed us to
implement a consistent, corporate-wide
PDF standard which we can use regardless
of the final print process, or print substrate.”
It’s not just Elmwood who are happy with
the results. “We’ve been getting very
favourable comments from our clients,” says
Peter. “One particular client has said that
we’ve revolutionised their proofing phase.
They’ve told us that the quality of proof that
we’re producing for them is far and away
the best result to portray design intent, to
the point that they want us to work with
them to bring their other suppliers up to
the same level. We even have two specific
examples where designs that would have
otherwise been rejected on the basis of the
perceived color quality have been approved
as a direct result of being produced using
GMG applications.”

discussion
recognized a while ago
that organizations have a
requirement to send jobs to
different GMG ColorProof installations within their
own environments and also externally to clients and
suppliers. In order for this to be useful the different
ColorProof installations have to mirror each other in
terms of proof standards and workflows. Therefore
GMG came up with a remote proofing feature for
ColorProof, allowing users to package their jobs
up and deliver them directly from one ColorProof
Server to another, thus allowing consistent proofing
across the enterprise.
GMG have now expanded this service to include
a truly distributed remote service using the GMG
CoZone Cloud Solution. CoZone Deliver has been
developed to address the remote proofing needs
of both large enterprises and small to medium
organizations that want to send proofs to remote
locations such as clients or suppliers. This article
explains the benefits of both solutions.
What is Deliver?

With the release of Deliver, CoZone now allows
users to collaborate on projects in a truly end to
end workflow, from content approval through
to final hard proof sign off. CoZone uniquely
allows end users to seamlessly cross over from
soft proofing to hard proofing in one integrated
workflow.
Benefits
of Deliver
The future of Deliver
CoZone constantly evolves based on customer
feedback and input. We see our customer’s
requirements as the most important input into
our new products. The next evolution of Deliver
(and CoZone in general) will enable organizations
to upload files into CoZone directly from their
internal workflow/MIS systems using XML based
job tickets. This will streamline the process
of getting files from one system to another
and provide the glue to link our clients legacy
workflow systems into CoZone.
The solution will be further enhanced in Q1 of
2014 with the release of a number of new features
in Collaborate, including a new Approval Phasing
module and dedicated soft proofing functionality.
These developments clearly demonstrate GMG’s
long-term commitment to web based products and
services and our intention to be the industry leader
in cloud based proofing and color management
solutions.

Sky Blue
Believe it or not: ELO’s
Mr. Blue Sky inspired by...
blue sky.
In a BBC Radio interview, Jeff Lynne –
ELO’s frontman and wrtiter – talked about
writing ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ after locking himself
away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO’s follow-up
to A New World Record: “It was dark and misty for 2 weeks,
and I didn’t come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and
it was, ‘Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.’ I wrote Mr. Blue Sky
and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks.”
What we need here is
some blue sky thinking.
Heard in board rooms all over the
cliched world, blue sky thinking refers to
original or creative thinking, unfettered by
convention and not grounded in reality.
The earliest recorded metaphorical uses
of the phrase “blue sky” were applied
to issues of corporate fraud. In the early
20th century people trading in worthless
securities – the kind of thing that much
later would have been termed junk bonds
– were said to be selling “blue sky and hot air” and they were
called “blue-sky merchants”. Source Express online
R:231 G:29 B: 115
Why is the sky
blue?
Is it:
a) The sun is yellow and the
grass is green. So yellow
and green make blue.
b) It is a reflection of all the
bodies of water on earth.
c) Oxygen is blue.
d) Sunlight reaches Earth’s
atmosphere and is scattered
in all directions by all the
gases and particles in the
air. Blue light is scattered
in all directions by the
tiny molecules of air in
Earth’s atmosphere. Blue is
scattered more than other
colors because it travels as
shorter, smaller waves. This
is why we see the sky as
blue.
