IGS is proud to present a wide range of interesting research and teaching activities in gender
studies: listen this Friday October 3 to Marijke Naezer on Radio EenVandaag and save the
date in November for the Radboud Gender & Sexualities Lecture by Patricia Lewis. Since
September 1 students in pedagogy studies will be taught how to look through a gender and
ethnicity lens in our new Master in Diversities in Youth Care and four PhDs started their new
research projects on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Read more below in our IGS

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Genderlezingen IGS Alumnidag RU – 4 oktober 2014 – Campus RU (in Dutch)
Tijdens de RU alumnidag 2014 op zaterdag 4 oktober verzorgen wetenschappers
lezingen over de laatste stand van zaken in de wetenschap met ruimte voor debat en
netwerkgelegenheden. De feestelijke dag op de campus is voor alumni van de
Radboud Universiteit. Dit jaar is het thema Gender met o.a. sprekers van het Institute
for Gender Studies als Yvonne Benschop in het plenaire ochtend programma en
Willy Jansen en Toine Lagro-Janssen bij de middag programma's van de afdelingen.
Prof. dr. Yvonne Benschop: De verschillen tussen vrouwen en mannen in het maken
van carrière in de wetenschap, bedrijfsleven en overheid. (Plenair ochtend
programma).
Prof. dr. Willy Jansen: Gender in de antropologie, toen en nu. (Thomas van

Research seminar IGS:
Angélique Janssens (RU) – Presentation and discussion - 7 October 2014
Angélique Janssens will present the new research project she started September 1st
2014. She will highlight specifically the gender aspects of her project: Genes, Germs

and Resources. The role of the family and the disease environment in mortality and
longevity in the Netherlands, 1812-2015.

Patricia Lewis on postfeminism and Intersectionality
On November 6 en 7, 2014 the Researchgroup Gender and Power in Politics
and Management and the Institute for Gender Studies will organize a seminar and
PhD masterclass with key note speaker Patricia Lewis on Postfeminism and
Intersectionality: Exploring the Complexities of Women’s Inclusion in Contemporary
Organizations.
This event is part of the Radboud Gender & Sexuality Lectures of the Institute for
Gender Studies.

Marijke Naezer in gesprek: Radio EenVandaag – vrijdag 3 oktober tussen 15.30
en 16.00 uur
Radio EenVandaag deed met een enquête onderzoek onder hun jongerenpanel
(jongeren van 15-24 jaar) naar de verspreiding van naaktfoto's/filmpjes. A.s. vrijdag 3
oktober presenteren zij de resultaten en gaan vervolgens in gesprek met drie
jongeren en Marijke Naezer. Marijke Naezer werkt bij het IGS aan haar
promotieonderzoek naar jongeren, seksualiteit en social media. Marijkes onderzoek

Blogging is an effective way to make research insightful and available to society,
especially to teenagers and students. IGS PhD Marijke Naezer writes regularly on
issues and questions on sexuality and youth. Lately, she was very critical on the art
project Kill your Darlings. Read her blog here.
NEWS
Master's in Diversities in Youth Care
September 1st the Specialisation of the Master's programme in Pedagogical Sciences
Diversities in Youth Care started. Students will develop an eye for the diversity in
backgrounds and for the difference in treatments and policies these diversities such
as ethnicity, religion, gender and social-economic class require. Master coordinator is

Projects on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
IGS welcomed four new PhD candidates. Their research projects take place in two
Nuffic capacity buiding projects on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.
 Mishu Ahasan: Street childhood sexuality and gender: an ethnographic
exploration.
 Nashida Ahmed: Gender Transformations: Models on Sexuality Education and
(Clinical) Counselling for Adolescent Girls in the Contexts of Cultural
Deprivation.
 Mrittikka Barua: Gender disparity in tuberculosis care: its association with
productive health outcome.
 Elvina Mustari: Sexual and reproductive health services for young people in
Bangladesh: Providers’ attitudes, young people’s needs and experiences.

2015 European Conference on Politics and Gender - June 11-13, Uppsala
University. Colleague Niels Spierings organises the session on: a forum for
proposing, discussing, and appraising various methodological issues, tools,
techniques, and sources in research about gender and politics. More information:

9th European Feminist Research Conference Sex & Capital (University of
Lapland, FI)
Call for papers for the 9th European Feminist Research Conference Sex & Capital,
which will be held at the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland: June 3-6, 2015.
The 9th EFRC is organized by the Faculty of Education together with ATGENDER.
Recent economic crises and their worldwide impacts have highlighted the
relationship between global politics and the economy. Indeed, economic discourses
reign supreme and it looks like capitalism has won, which raises feminist concern.
Sex & Capital will engage with recent feminist thinking on gender politics, economics
and futures to ask questions such as: What are the different, sexualized forms of
capital? What are the gendered dynamics and outcomes of barefaced capitalism?
How should we understand and reconceptualise material realities, embodiment and
subjectivities?
The 9th Conference invites scholars, students, policy makers and activists to gather
and discuss and reflect upon these themes. Deadline for submission of abstracts is
November 3, 2014.

Dutch Journal for Gender Studies (Tijdschrift voor Gender Studies)
Call for Papers: Special Issue: Sexuality in Movement: Beyond the ‘Sexual
Revolution’. SI Editors: Jantine Oldersma and Robert Davidson. The Tijdschrift voor
Genderstudies invites articles contributing to academic reflection on movements,
specifically focused on contemporary and historic movements that engage with
sexuality. Deadline submission of abstracts: November 1, 2014.

ACTIVITIES Nijmegen
5000 Rubles - Movie and debate - 21 October – De Lindenberg
In 2013 the Russian parliament passed legislation that criminalizes public discussion
of homosexuality, especially by foreigners. The fine for kissing someone of the same
sex in public: 5000 Rubles. For the LGBT rights movement in Russia the
consequences are huge.
For the documentary ‘5000 Rubles’ Kris van der Veen went to Russia to hear
firsthand what motivates a young LGBT movement to take a stand. His visit ended in
a police raid, being charged with making gay propaganda. Van der Veen and his
crew got off with a fright. Russian youngster live in this situation daily. This
documentary lets them speak.
After watching the documentary and a short break, a panel will discuss if and
how local organizations, foreign countries and NGO’s can better the human rights
situation in Russia. There will be some question time. Panel: Kris van der Veen
(Director of ‘5000 Rubles’ and LGBT activist), Anna van der Vleuten (Associate
Professor in International Relations, Radboud University), Joyce Hamilton (Board
member of ILGA Europe; international policy officer at COC), Niels Spierings (chair)
(Assistant professor in political & gender sociology; LGBT activist).
The documentary will be subtitled in English, Russian spoken; the panel will be in
English.

(S)hevolution - 11 oktober - Museum Oriëntalis
Bijeenkomst van de CDAV Gelderland waarbij collega`s en/of studenten van harte
welkom zijn.
Change agent Kirsten van den Hul presenteerde inoktober 2013 haar boek
(s)hevolution, de eeuw van de vrouw, waarin zij oproept tot een (s)hevolution, waarbij
mannen en vrouwen samen de wereld veranderen. ‘Niet omdat het moet, maar
omdat het werkt.’ In 2011 was Kirsten van den Hul vrouwenvertegenwoordiger
namens Nederland voor de VN in New York. Zij is een graag geziene gast aan tafel
bij tv-programma’s als Pauw en Witteman en schrijft ook wekelijks een column in het
AD. Vorig jaar won Kirsten terecht de Joke Smitprijs, een tweejaarlijkse
aanmoedigingsprijs van het ministerie van OCW voor een persoon of groep die een
belangrijke bijdrage heeft geleverd aan de verbetering van de positie van vrouwen in
Nederland. Kirsten van den Hul (Deventer, 1976) studeerde Oost-Europese Studies
in Amsterdam en Arabisch in Tunis.

ACTIVITIES AND CALLS ELSEWHERE:
Toneelvoorstelling The Marx Sisters
STAN nodigt u van harte uit voor een nieuwe voorstelling, The Marx Sisters, een
productie van STAN en de KOE over emancipatie en politiek verzuim. The Marx
Sisters vertrekt van het levensverhaal en de emancipatiestrijd van de twee dochters
van Karl Marx. Natali Broods, Willem de Wolf en Sara De Roo willen met dit project in
de eerste plaats nadenken over feminisme, idealisme en gender. Willem de Wolf
schrijft de tekst. Het stuk gaat in première op dinsdag 21 oktober in de Brakke Grond
in Amsterdam en in België op 6 november in de Kaaistudio’s in Brussel.
