Nature and port in balance The Port of Antwerp has over the years developed into a maritime, industrial and logistics cluster and is the gateway to the rest of Europe. But the port is more than an important economic hub. Its unique location along the Scheldt, 80 km inland, provides access to an estuary that creates space for a unique landscape filled with life. This makes the Antwerp port area one of the most important habitats of species that are threatened at European level. In fact, large parts of it are designated as "Special Protection Areas under the terms of the European Bird and Habitat Directive" (Natura 2000). The Port of Antwerp is living proof that economy and ecology can co-exist in a sustainable manner. ‘’ The objective of 'The Port of Antwerp More Naturally' is to set aside 5% of the Antwerp port area as ecological infrastructure. Eddy Bruyninckx CEO ANTWERP PORT AUTHORITY Nature and port in balance I ndustry and nature were once diametrically opposed. The construction of the Deurganck dock put an end to this. All parties gradually became aware of the need for a new vision based on consultation and dialogue rather than conflict and legal battles. Cooperation and dialogue In 2000 the Antwerp Port Authority, Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever and 'Natuurpunt', a non-profit nature association, signed a charter setting up the project ‘The Port of Antwerp More Naturally'. The project provides for the creation of a network of ecological infrastructure within the port area and aims to set aside 5 percent of the Antwerp port area, about 650 hectares, as ecological infrastructure to ensure the sustainable conservation of port-specific species. In addition, nature core areas are being created around the port area. This revolutionary approach has been selected by the European Community as an exemplary approach. ministerial decree of the Flemish Minister for the Environment. The Antwerp Port Authority, the Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever, non-profit association Natuurpunt, Voka-Chamber of Commerce Antwerpen-Waasland, Alfaport and representatives of the industry have committed themselves to the conservation of 90 protected species within the port area through the Species Protection Programme. INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION Last year the Port of Antwerp received an award for its efforts to profile itself as a sustainable port where economic activity and nature development go hand in hand. Eddy Bruyninckx, CEO of the Antwerp Port Authority, was presented the bronze Environment Award at the meeting of the International Association of Ports and Harbours in Los Angeles. Furthermore, the Port of Antwerp was awarded the prestigious Environmental World Ports Award 2013 in Abu Dhabi for its remarkable contribution to the environment. Long-term sustainability A sustainable port policy enables any further expansion of economic activity to go hand in hand with the conservation, reinforcement and even further development of the beautiful natural environment in and around the port area. The focus is on balance yet without jeopardising the development and operation of the port infrastructure.
