The Rubenshuis will spare no effort in mounting a unique exhibition
on the portraiture of Peter Paul Rubens in the spring of 2015. Some
of his most beautiful and touching portraits are those of his family,
which were painted out of love and not out of commercial interest.
These works will now be shown together in their original home, the
Rubenshuis in Antwerp.
By his own account, Peter Paul Rubens loathed painting portraits – portraiture
was not highly rated by seventeenth-century art theorists in any case. But this
did not prevent him from becoming one of the most skilful portraitists of his day.
His finest and most intimate likenesses undoubtedly include those of his family:
his two wives – Isabella, who died young, and the beautiful Helena – and his
children, from Clara-Serena’s mischievous face to the life-size portraits of lanky
Nicolaas and Albert. Rubens also portrayed his brothers- and sisters-in-law, and
of course himself: as a young man, while travelling with his brother in Italy, and
later, too, as an elderly gentleman of standing who was already staring death in
the face. Rubens’s portraits of his family were not produced to commission but
painted out of love, to serve as keepsakes. These dazzling works of art will be
shown together for the first time, and the venue, appropriately enough, will be
the place where they truly belong: Rubens’s former home in Antwerp.
The exhibition, which is being put together by a host of Rubens specialists, will
include some fifty drawings and paintings from such leading museums as the
National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, the
Musée du Louvre in Paris and the British Museum in London.
