Energy efficient house
comparison between a design process

with the use of simulation tools and
a design process without the use of
simulation tools
Introduction
Figure 1 : energy efficient houses [1]
Energy neutral building is becoming more important in the
future years, according to European and Dutch
government policies. The Netherlands will continue to
build more durable buildings which are almost energy
neutral or energy plus by 2020 [2]
During the design process of energy neutral buildings,
collaboration between an architect and a building physicist
is very important. Designing large structures is becoming
a more integrated affair. That means that different
disciplines of engineering are working together to create a
design. For smaller projects, mainly residential, this
cooperation between disciplines is less common.
To design energy neutral houses, knowledge of the
building physics is required. The architect can gain this
knowledge in different ways. First by looking to sample
projects of energy neutral buildings. A second way is to
work together with a building physicist. And third by using
physical simulation tools during the design process.

Expected result
The aim of the first research part is to map out the design
process of architects of energy neutral buildings. The
expected result of the research as a whole is an advice for
architects. This advice contains a design model which
explains the best way for architects to design energy
efficient houses.

Research question
Main question
Are simulation programs for dwellings a guarantee to
accomplish the highest score on energy saving in a
sustainability certification program?
Sub questions
Which simulation programs do architectural offices use
nowadays in their design process for energy neutral
buildings and what are the phases of the design process?
Which indicators are important and which program is the
preferred choice to use for the comparison of the designs?
