It is thought this tree was discovered and identified in the 1920s when contracted surveyors surveyed the present State Highway 12 through the forest. In 1928, Nicholas Yakas and other bushmen, who were building the road, also identified the big tree Tane Mahuta. According to Maori mythology Tane is the son of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. Tane was the child that tore his parents' parental embrace and once done set about clothing his mother in the forest we have here today. All living creatures of the forest are regarded as Tane’s children. Photo: D Williams. Cathedral Cove This recreation reserve, gifted to the nation in the 1980s by Vaughan and Doreen Harsant, boasts some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal scenery. A walking track gives access to Gemstone Bay, Stingray Bay and the beautiful sandy beaches at Cathedral Cove separated by a rock arch. Although this track is well graded, there are some hill slopes so allow plenty of time for the walk, wear appropriate footwear, and take food and water with you. The track drops steadily from the car park into a valley where a side loop track takes you through a puriri grove and then back onto the main track. Alternatively, you can take a side track down to Gemstone Bay which has a bouldery beach and snorkel trail or, a little further on, another side track to Stingray Bay. Stingray Bay has some large boulders with a beautiful sandy beach beyond. Special features are a sea cave and honeycomb weathering on the cliff face across the bay. Please note the north-western end of the beach at Stingray Bay is closed due to the danger of falling rocks and debris from the cliffs above. Visitors are advised not to use this end of the beach or adjacent waters. Signs and markers are in place to identify and warn people of the danger area. Back on the main track, you climb out of the valley up to a high point overlooking the coastline. Stop, catch your breath and admire the view of the offshore islands. The track then crosses pasture and scrubland before entering pine forest with a good understorey of native shrubs. From here, it is all downhill to Cathedral Cove and even though this means there is a climb back off the beach for the return journey, it is well worth it to experience the beauty of the place. Please take care when walking through the arch separating the two beaches at Cathedral Cove. Rockfall hazards exist in and around the arch and could occur at any time due to ongoing natural weathering and erosion. A management regime is in place to monitor the condition of the arch to make it as safe as possible. There is a walking track from the western end of Hahei beach up to Cathedral Cove car park to connect with the track to Cathedral Cove. Allow an extra 20 - 30 minutes for this walk. Getting there At the end of Grange Road at Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula. Turn left just past the Hahei shops (signposted to Cathedral Cove). DENK AAN HOOG EN LAAG WATER !!!!!!! Pagina 13 Roadbook New Zealand Hot Water Beach Hot Water Beach is a 'Must Do' activity when visiting The Coromandel A truly unique Kiwi experience that every New Zealander should experience at least once in their lifetime! An underground river of hot water flows from the interior of the earth to surface in the Pacific Ocean at Hot Water Beach – a long beautiful white beach located between Tairua and Whitianga. The stunning beach overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offshore Castle Rock, with Pohutukawa lined cliffs at either end of the beach. Two hours either side of low tide visitors flock to the usually deserted Hot Water Beach to find hot water bubbling through the golden sand. Families, kids and couples can been seen digging their own spa pool in the sand to lie back in and relax while the steam from their hot pool envelops them. With the ebb and flow of the tide each individually created hot pool is washed away clearing the way for the next influx of visitors. For further information and exact location details refer to the product listing for Hot Water Beach The beach also boasts some great surf, cruisy café’s and galleries and only a 5 minute drive to another Coromandel ‘must do’ – the walk into Cathedral Cove The hot springs are only accessible at low tide however more often than not two hours each side of low tide, will still provide you with an opportunity to dig your own spa. Gannets were first noted at Cape Kidnappers in small numbers in about 1850 by Henry Hill, a NZ naturalist. The Cape now accommodates over 20,000 birds spread over four main nesting sites – The Plateau, Saddle, Whalebone Reef and Black Reef colonies. Recent research has shown that the gannet numbers here are growing by around 2.5% each year The gannets are present at the Cape from August to April of each year for the sole purpose of breeding. At the age of around 15-16 weeks, the chicks will take their first ever flight – a solo instinctive migration of around 2,800km to Australian waters. The mortality rate is high with around 70-80% perishing before they have a chance to return. Those that do survive will return to their birth colony at around 2-3 years old, complete with their beautiful adult colouring. They will then spend the rest of their lives in this area – on land to breed, and on NZ sea-waters for the winter. Gannets are an impressive sight with their defined markings, colouring and their superb elegance in flight. A diving gannet is a sight to see – they can hit the water at speeds of up to 140km/hr! You will see gannet pairs rub their heads & beaks together, preen each other and bow & call to each other – this is done during courtship or when one partner returns to the nest. Gannets normally mate for life. Their tolerance towards visitors allows us to get very close without causing disturbance. Pororari River Track Pororari River surrounded by lush bush Pororari River Time: 1 hr Distance: 3.5 km, one way Track category: Walking track This track follows a spectacular limestone gorge with two main features - a river with huge rocks in deep pools, and beautiful forest featuring subtle changes from sub-tropical to temperate. A 15 minute gentle stroll from the car park brings you to a seat and a lookout, with spectacular views of the river gorge with its magnificent limestone cliffs. From this point on, the track narrows and the gradients become a little steeper as the track continues for another 2.5km until it meets the Inland Pack Track. Five minutes beyond this junction the track leads to the riverbed, an ideal place for a rest before retracing your steps back to the car park. Access: From the carpark by the Pororari River bridge, one kilometre north of the Visitor Centre on SH6. Punakaiki - Pororari Loop Time: 3 hr Distance: 11 km, loop Track category: Walking track, Tramping track A popular walking track combining the southern section of the Inland Pack Track with the Pororari River Track. Return to the junction and then follow the Pororari River Track down river to the car park on SH6. From there it is a 1km walk south along SH6. to the Visitor Centre. Access: From the Visitor Centre follow SH6 south to Waikori Road, 200 m on the left after the Punakaiki River. (Note: The vehicle bridge on SH6 over the Punakaiki River has pedestrian access on the upstream side). Follow Waikori Road for 1km to the car park.
