About Tane Mahuta
Tane Mahuta ('Lord of the Forest') is New Zealand’s largest known
living kauri tree. It is thought this tree was discovered and identified in
the 1920s when contracted surveyors surveyed the present State
Highway 12 through the forest. In 1928, Nicholas Yakas and other
bushmen, who were building the road, also identified the big tree Tane
Mahuta.
According to Maori mythology Tane is the son of Ranginui the sky
father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. Tane was the child that tore
his parents' parental embrace and once done set about clothing his
mother in the forest we have here today. All living creatures of the
forest are regarded as Tane’s children.
Measurements
Trunk girth: 13.77 m
Trunk height: 17.68 m
Total height: 51.2 m
Trunk volume: 244.5 m³
Getting there
The Tane Mahuta Walk is sign posted from State Highway 12, which runs through the Waipoua Forest. The
southern township of Dargaville is 65 km away and the northern township of Omapere is 18 km.
The road widens at the Tane Mahuta car park to accommodate visitor vehicles. There is a picnic area, and
toilets located 5 m back from the car park on the opposite side of the road from the track entrance.

Cathedral Cove Walk
Time:
Distance:
1 hr 30 min return
2.5 km
Description
Cathedral Cove, Coromandel Peninsula. Photo: D
Williams.
Cathedral Cove
This recreation reserve, gifted to the nation in the
1980s by Vaughan and Doreen Harsant, boasts
some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal
scenery. A walking track gives access to Gemstone
Bay, Stingray Bay and the beautiful sandy beaches
at Cathedral Cove separated by a rock arch.
Although this track is well graded, there are some
hill slopes so allow plenty of time for the walk, wear
appropriate footwear, and take food and water
with you.
The track drops steadily from the car park into a valley where a side loop track takes you through a puriri grove and then
back onto the main track. Alternatively, you can take a side track down to Gemstone Bay which has a bouldery beach and
snorkel trail or, a little further on, another side track to Stingray Bay.
Stingray Bay has some large boulders with a beautiful sandy beach beyond. Special features are a sea cave and honeycomb
weathering on the cliff face across the bay. Please note the north-western end of the beach at Stingray Bay is closed due to
the danger of falling rocks and debris from the cliffs above. Visitors are advised not to use this end of the beach or adjacent
waters. Signs and markers are in place to identify and warn people of the danger area.
Back on the main track, you climb out of the valley up to a high point overlooking the coastline. Stop, catch your breath and
admire the view of the offshore islands. The track then crosses pasture and scrubland before entering pine forest with a good
understorey of native shrubs. From here, it is all downhill to Cathedral Cove and even though this means there is a climb back
off the beach for the return journey, it is well worth it to experience the beauty of the place.
Please take care when walking through the arch separating the two beaches at Cathedral Cove. Rockfall hazards exist in and
around the arch and could occur at any time due to ongoing natural weathering and erosion. A management regime is in
place to monitor the condition of the arch to make it as safe as possible.
There is a walking track from the western end of Hahei beach up to Cathedral Cove car park to connect with the track to
Cathedral Cove. Allow an extra 20 - 30 minutes for this walk.
Getting there
At the end of Grange Road at Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Turn left just past the Hahei shops (signposted to Cathedral Cove).

Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is a 'Must Do' activity when visiting The Coromandel
A truly unique Kiwi experience that every New
Zealander should experience at least once in
their lifetime!
An underground river of hot water flows from
the interior of the earth to surface in the Pacific
Ocean at Hot Water Beach – a long beautiful
white beach located between Tairua and
Whitianga. The stunning beach overlooks the
Pacific Ocean and offshore Castle Rock, with
Pohutukawa lined cliffs at either end of the
beach.
Two hours either side of low tide visitors flock
to the usually deserted Hot Water Beach to
find hot water bubbling through the golden
sand. Families, kids and couples can been seen
digging their own spa pool in the sand to lie
back in and relax while the steam from their
hot pool envelops them.
With the ebb and flow of the tide each individually created hot pool is washed away clearing the way for the next influx of
visitors.
For further information and exact location details refer to the product listing for Hot Water Beach
The beach also boasts some great surf, cruisy café’s and galleries and only a 5 minute drive to another Coromandel ‘must do’
– the walk into Cathedral Cove
The hot springs are only accessible at low tide
however more often than not two hours each side of low tide, will still provide you with an opportunity to dig your own spa.

Vandaag Otago Anniversary Day
White Island Tours gives you an in-depth guided tour of one of the world’s most interesting volcanoes. The
island’s history is related in an informative way, with scientific information explained in an easy-to-understand
manner.
Shortly after check-in at the White Island Rendezvous, the tour departs from the Whakatane Wharf. You will
find yourself aboard PeeJay, a luxury launch specifically built for the tours to White
Island.
The trip out to the island is approximately 80 minutes, depending on conditions, so
there is plenty of time to take in the scenery and marine life and enjoy our
commentary through the excellent microphone system on board.
On the way out to the island our crew will issue everyone with safety gear, consisting of a
hard hat and gas mask. Upon arrival at White Island, we anchor PeeJay and ferry
everyone over to the island via inflatable boat to an existing concrete jetty. There is a short
ladder to climb, a steel planking system to cross, and some boulders to negotiate before
reaching the shore. Then it is time to start your exploration of New Zealand’s only live
marine volcano.

Often described as the best one-day hike in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing provides an
opportunity to experience some of the most scenic and active volcanic areas of the National Park. The total
distance one way is 19.5km and you can expect to be no less than amazed with the sights and sounds you will
encounter.
The track winds up the Mangatepopo Valley to the saddle between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Poles lead
across the South crater to the tracks highpoint at Red Crater (1886m), an active and still steaming vent.
Beyond the Red Crater the track passes the Emerald Lakes and past Te Wai-Whakaata-o-te-Rangihiroa (Blue
Lake). From here the route descends to Ketetahi Hut and skirts the nearby springs down through native forest
to the car park.
We can and will only recommend the best local operators to take you out on the Crossing. For anyone that is
reasonably fit and enjoys the outdoors, this is an experience not to be missed.

The Gannets
Gannets were not noted by Captain James Cook during his
coastline visit in 1769 which leads us to assume that they have
not always been present in this area. Gannets were first noted
at Cape Kidnappers in small numbers in about 1850 by Henry
Hill, a NZ naturalist.
The Cape now accommodates over 20,000 birds spread over four
main nesting sites – The Plateau, Saddle, Whalebone Reef and
Black Reef colonies. Recent research has shown that the gannet
numbers here are growing by around 2.5% each year
The gannets are present at the Cape from August to April of each
year for the sole purpose of breeding. At the age of around 15-16
weeks, the chicks will take their first ever flight – a solo instinctive
migration of around 2,800km to Australian waters. The mortality
rate is high with around 70-80% perishing before they have a
chance to return. Those that do survive will return to their birth
colony at around 2-3 years old, complete with their beautiful adult
colouring. They will then spend the rest of their lives in this area –
on land to breed, and on NZ sea-waters for the winter.
Gannets are an impressive sight with their defined markings,
colouring and their superb elegance in flight. A diving gannet is a
sight to see – they can hit the water at speeds of up to 140km/hr! You will see gannet pairs rub their
heads & beaks together, preen each other and bow & call to each other – this is done during courtship or
when one partner returns to the nest. Gannets normally mate for life.
Their tolerance towards visitors allows us to get very close without causing disturbance.

The Pancake Rocks and Blowholes
Punakaiki is een kleine nederzetting aan de West Coast van het Zuidereiland van Nieuw-Zeeland, gelegen
tussen Westport en Greymouth. De plaats ligt aan de rand van het nationaal park Paparoa. Door het dorp
loopt de State Highway 6.
rotsen.
Pancake Rocks and Blowholes Walk
Time: 20 mins
Distance: 1.1 km, loop
Track category: Short walk, Walking track, Easy access short walk
This is an all weather walk around the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Looking like giant pancakes the curious
limestone formations are especially spectacular at high tide in a westerly sea. With the exception of an optional short
section with steps, the walk is suitable for wheelchairs (with assistance). As the rocks are both fragile and dangerous, it
is important to stay on the path.
Access: From the main road, opposite the visitor centre.
Truman Track
Time: 15 mins
Distance: 700 m, one way
Track category: Walking track
Truman Track is a walk through unspoiled sub-tropical forest where podocarp and rata trees tower above thickets of
vines and nikau palms. The track emerges on a spectacular coastline with cliffs, caverns, a blowhole and a waterfall
which plummets straight onto a rock-strewn beach. A stairway provides access to the beach, which may be safely
explored when the tide is out.
Access: From the main road, 3 km north of the visitor centre.
Pagina 30
Roadbook New Zealand
Punakaiki Cavern
Time: Take as long as you like
Track category: Walking track
A wooden stairway gives access to 130 m of safe passages with a few stalactites and the odd glow worm. Plenty of fun
for all ages, so long as a good torch (and preferably a spare) is carried.
Access: Signposted beside the main road 500 m north of the visitor centre.
Pororari River Track
Pororari River surrounded by lush bush
Pororari River
Time: 1 hr
Distance: 3.5 km, one way
Track category: Walking track
This track follows a spectacular limestone gorge with two main features - a river with huge rocks in deep pools, and
beautiful forest featuring subtle changes from sub-tropical to temperate.
A 15 minute gentle stroll from the car park brings you to a seat and a lookout, with spectacular views of the river gorge
with its magnificent limestone cliffs. From this point on, the track narrows and the gradients become a little steeper as the
track continues for another 2.5km until it meets the Inland Pack Track. Five minutes beyond this junction the track leads
to the riverbed, an ideal place for a rest before retracing your steps back to the car park.
Access: From the carpark by the Pororari River bridge, one kilometre north of the Visitor Centre on SH6.
Punakaiki - Pororari Loop
Time: 3 hr
Distance: 11 km, loop
Track category: Walking track, Tramping track
A popular walking track combining the southern section of the Inland Pack Track with the Pororari River Track. It crosses
the Punakaiki River via a footbridge, and then follows an easily graded climb through mature rain forest over the ridge
dividing the two rivers. When the Pororari River Track junction is reached, it is worth carrying on along the Inland Pack
Track for a short distance to the Pororari River, a perfect place for a rest and something to eat. Return to the junction and
then follow the Pororari River Track down river to the car park on SH6. From there it is a 1km walk south along SH6. to
the Visitor Centre.
Access: From the Visitor Centre follow SH6 south to Waikori Road, 200 m on the left after the Punakaiki River. (Note: The
vehicle bridge on SH6 over the Punakaiki River has pedestrian access on the upstream side). Follow Waikori Road for
1km to the car park. The track starts 50 m further down the road on the left at the footbridge. Please leave the farm gate
at the start of Waikori Road closed at all times.

Terrace Walk Track – Glow-worms!
This easy walk winds a short way along the bush-clad terraces at the south end of the village.
The walk provides a good introduction to the rainforest of the Glacier Region. There is no access
beyond the bridge due to a slip and you will need to return the way you came.
Take a torch and explore this walk at night to see glow-worms in the forest, especially under and
around large fallen trees alongside the track.
Getting there
The walk starts off State Highway 6, just two minutes walk from the Westland Tai Poutini National
Park Visitor Centre and i-SITE. Park at the Visitor Centre and cross the highway – the track entrance
(with a very small parking area) is approximately 50 metres south of ‘Our Lady of the Alps’ church.
Time:
30 min return from car park
Distance:

Sentinel Rock Walk
Sentinel Rock emerged from beneath the glacier in 1865
It’s an example of how the glacial ice ground the hard schist bedrock into a Roche moutonnee or
‘rock sheep’. Since 1909 the glacier has retreated over 3 km and plants have progressively colonised
where a veneer of rubble has been dumped over bedrock in the valley.
Getting there
Drive or walk south from the Franz Josef Waiau township across the Waiho River bridge and turn
left onto the Glacier Access Road or Te Ara a Waiau. Drive or walk for approximately 4 km to the car
park at the end of the road.
Time:
20 min return

Arrowtown

Anniversary Walk
Arrow River Trail
Time: 50 mins return to bridge
Grade: Easy
Gear: Reasonable footwear recommended
Start by the Trails Notice Board at Butlers Green and walk diagonally to your left to cross a small
footbridge over Bush Creek. Turn right and just around the corner towards the Arrow River this is
another sign. Keeping to the left you will head on to a foot track that goes up and over the Arrow
Irrigation Pipeline. The trail follows the pipeline for much of the way. This is a relaxing wander high
above the Arrow River. 20 mins into the trail you will pass a spot where the Sawpit Gully stream
falls down a picturesque waterfall (ideal spot for a rest). Not far on from this you'll reach the turn
off to the Sawpit Gully trail, and 3 mins on from this point, you will reach the Norman Smith foot
bridge where the trail joins the Macetown Road. You can either retrace your steps back to Arrowtown
or return to Arrowtown via the Macetown 4WD road (some river crossings may be necessary).

Milford Sound
Milford Sound is awe-inspiring and getting there is definitely part of the experience.
You can either take a coach from Te Anau or self drive on one of the finest alpine drives in the world.
Local Tip:
Try a Nature cruise in the morning. Milford Sound is stunning and generally calm in the morning, there are
less people around and it frees up your entire afternoon to do many of the scenic stops on your trip back
to Te Anau

1 MIRROR LAKES
From Te Anou head north 3o km on 5H 94
Across the plains to Te Anau Downs where
You can stop to the jetty to see the historic
55 Tarawera which carries trampers across
The lake to the start of the world-famous
Milford Track. The road continues north
along the Eglinton Valley for another 3t km
Through patches of beech forest to the Mirror
Lakes signposted on the left.
A 5-minute boardwalk leads through
moss-covered beech trees to viewing platforms at the Mirror Lakes where pictureperfect images of the surrounding snowcapped peaks are reflected in the still water.
2 CASCADE CREEK
Continue north on SH g+. Ahead Iies o
Stretch of road signposted as the avenue of
The disappearing mountain', which provides
The illusion that a peak ahead is sinking out
Of sight as you drive directly towards it. lt is
Ry km to Cascade Creek signposted on the
Left. An easy 3o-minute loop walk leading
from Cascade Creek circles through the forest
to Lake Gunn. The lake was known to Maori
as O Tapara and its shores were a resting
place for parties heading to Anita Bay on the
West Coast in search of greenstone. Paradise
Ducks and scup can often be seen on the
Takes while the surrounding red beech forest
is alive with forest birds, including tomtits,
fantails, bellbirds, parakeets, kereru and the
tiny rifleman. You may also catch sight of the
long-tailed bat, which, along with another
species of bat, are New Zealand's only native
tand mammals.
3 HOLLYFORD VALLEY
Continue north u km on 5H 94 and turn right
into Hollyford Road. Drive north-east t km
to the start of the Lake Morian Trock signposted on the left.
The best walk in the Hollyford Valley is the
first r5-minute section of the track to Lake
Marian. The track crosses a swing bridge over
the with waters of the Hollyford River then
leads through the forest to an exciting
boardwalk perched above a series of rapids
Pagina 41
Roadbook New Zealand
where the river rages down through the
forest.
4 HOMER TUNNEL
Return to SH 94, turn right and drive along
the upper reaches of the Hollyford River. The
road runs post a thundering waterfall on the
left, with rapids on the right as the valley
steepens on its winding path towards the
Homer Saddle. lt is 15 km driving north-west
to the Homer Tunnel which descends 1 km
through the mountain to emerge in the
Cleddau Valley.
Named after Harry Homer, who discovered
the saddle in 1889, the tunnel was begun in
1935 as a project for the unemployed and
took another 18 years to complete. The
rough-hewn rock walls of the Homer Tunnel,
dripping water and lit only by your headlights, present an eerie sight as you drive
downhill towards the western portal. Just
past the exit, a 15-minute nature walk climbs
from the right side of the road through the
forest beneath the towering rock face of the
Homer Saddle and surrounding valley walls.
0n a rainy day the mountain comes alive with
dozens of waterfalls cascading down the
sheer rock faces from the Homer Saddle.
5 THE CHASM
Continue north-west 5 km on SH 94 down
The winding road through the Cleddau Valley
to the Chasm, signposted to the left.
A 10-minute walking track leads from the
road to the impressive Chasm, a series of
falls where the water has spun small rounded
stones that have cut fluted channels into the
rock. The upper falls tumble 22 m through a
series of cascades under a natural rock
bridge to another waterfall.
6 TUTOKO VALLEY
Continue 9 km north-west down through the
forest-covered Cleddau Valley on SH 94 to
the Tutoko Bridge. The Tutoko Walking Track
is signposted on the right.
You can take a short walk into the forest on
the Tutoko track, but good views of
2746 m Mt Tutoko can be obtained from the
road bridge. The peak was first climbed by
Samuel Turner, an eccentric Englishman who
Pagina 42
Roadbook New Zealand
led several expeditions in the 1920’s,
modelled on the classical mountaineering
expeditions made in the Himalayas, complete
with guides, porters and carefully selected
companions.
He finally reached the peak of Fiordland's
highest mountain on his sixth attempt.
7 MILFORD SOUND
Continue west 4 km on SH 94 to Milford
Sound.
No photographs or travel reports can
adequately prepare the visitor for the first
glimpse of Mitford Sound, a scenic wonder
dominated by the distinctive form of Mitre
Peak. As the climate warmed at the end of
the ice ages, huge amounts of ice melted and
the sea level rose, flooding many of the
deeply cut glacial valleys to create the fiords
that now make up this magnificent stretch
of coastline.
8 BOWEN FALLS
The track to the Bowen Falls is clearly
signposted from the end of the road and
the ferry jetty.
You can walk to the 160 m Bowen Falls in
less than 10 minutes, the track rounding a
rocky bluff and skirting through a small patch
of forest onto the rocky fan below the falls
which explode in two tiers from a hanging
valley high above.
After heavy rain the falls are even more
dramatic. The volume of water increases and
a single vast curtain of water and spray
thunders into the sea.
From Milford Sound it is tzt km back to
Te Anau on SH 94.

Takitimu Heritage Trail
Welcome to the Takitimu Heritage Trail. The route is
dominated by spectacular Takitimu Mountains and
foothills. Twelve sites marked with Heritage Trail signs
are situated between Wreys Bush in the east and
Birchwood in the west. The 40 km route may be travelled
in either direction. The earliest European settlers in the
area sweated both above and below the ground. Above
ground farmers tamed the land from wilderness to its
present agricultural bounty. Beneath the surface
coalminers contributed much to the nation’s wealth
extracting millions of tonnes of high quality coal. Both
agriculture and mining produced a strong community
spirit that was, and remains, characteristic of the
district.Enjoy the journey and drive safely!
