Specsavers Recruitment Services – more
commonly known as SRS – has been providing
support to stores for over 20 years. The UK
team currently comprises 20 recruiters who
work with stores across the UK and Republic
of Ireland providing a range of services,
including:

professional staff at a heavily reduced
recruitment fee.

members and managers.

Hearcare and lab recruitment.

Growth spurt
‘Back in 2010, we placed around 190 staff into
stores. Last year we’d grown this to nearly
1,300 – over half of which were experienced
optical and hearcare professionals,’ says Rob
Mould, Head of SRS in the UK.

Says Rob: ‘Part of our role is to ensure that
if a member of the stores professional staff,
such as a DO or optom, wants to move stores
for whatever reason, be it career progression,
relocation etc, then SRS should be their first
point of contact.’
Hearcare and domiciliary
In the last couple of years, SRS has taken
a greater role in delivering recruitment
solutions to new areas of the business. In
2012, it took responsibility for Hearcare
recruitment, placing 40 Hearcare
professionals in 2013, and has already made
a number of pivotal placements across the
country in the domiciliary market following
last year’s acquisition of the Healthcall
business.

Retail recruitment
In 2013, SRS launched a totally new – and
totally free – service to stores which provides
full support for entry level retail staff, using
Specsavers’ own assessment tool ‘Talent
Screener.’ In the first 12 months, this service
resulted in the placement of more than 600
retailers in stores across the UK and Ireland,
and is set to grow in 2014.

Although SRS has been around for many years, it surprises many people to find out that the
UK office is still based in the same small market town of Launceston, Cornwall, in southwest England where it all began 20 years ago. ‘The majority of the work is telephone and
internet based, so Cornwall is as good a location to deliver this as any,’ explains Rob Mould.
As well as talking on the phone, however, there are regular opportunities to meet the
team throughout the year – for example at key events such as the Partners and Managers
Seminars, the Professional Advancement Committee and the Excel training programmes for
newly qualified professionals.

SRS is managing all recruitment and
advertising for the apprenticeship vacancies,
including the various competency and
behavioural assessments and an in-store
interview to enrol the most suitable applicants
to fill the 30 vacancies available each month
on a rolling basis.
Employer brand
As part of their role in supporting stores
find professionally qualified staff, SRS is
responsible for helping build the Specsavers
employer brand with our target audience.
In the UK this year, for example, the team
has represented Specsavers at the ABDO
annual conference and the industry trade
show Optrafair in London. On top of this,
they do a huge amount of advertising in the
external market and use social media to give
Specsavers the best chance of securing the
right people.

SRS in
Australia/NZ
SRS has been operating in Australia and New
Zealand for the past five years and, much like
the UK, was originally set up as a support
function to assist stores with their basic
recruitment needs. In the last 12 months,
however, it has undergone a radical shift in
the way it operates, transforming itself into an
end-to-end premium recruitment agency.
The team is based in Specsavers’ Melbourne
office and is made up of six recruiters – four
of whom focus on locum recruitment and two
on permanent recruitment. While the majority
of the work is telephone based, each team
member attends key business events in the
Specsavers calendar and all have taken part
in the Specsavers In-store experience.
Says Kellie Anastasiadis, Head of SRS ANZ:
‘Our success since we implemented the
changes becomes clear when looking at our
volumes of locum and permanent positions
filled. Our locum team has smashed all records
in the last 12 months, filling a total of 13,040
days – an increase of 33% on the previous
year; while the number of permanent positions
filled has grown by over 20% on the previous
year. Our goals for 2014 will see SRS deliver
14,000+ locum days and place just over 200
permanent people into stores.’
SRS in the
Netherlands
The Netherlands is the latest country to set
up a dedicated SRS agency – launched at the
end of last year to help support a growth
target of 15% in the Dutch market. Despite
the optics profession being unregulated in
the Netherlands, Specsavers’ recruitment
strategy focuses purely on employing
qualified opticians only – which makes for
a smaller pool of candidates. In spite of the
challenges, the SRS team of three are already
filling an average of 10 permanent optician
vacancies and 10 permanent retail positions
per month, plus over 800 locum days since
the start of the year – a great result with such
a small team. Areas of focus include online
advertising and social media, alongside the
more traditional industry magazines.
‘We set our entry levels higher than a lot of
our competitors, which can make it tough
to find the right calibre of candidates,’ says
Tim de Vries, Head of SRS Netherlands. ‘That
said, we are noticing more opticians choosing
Specsavers because they see we are the
country’s fastest growing optical company and
investing in our stores and our people.’
