Het Festival van Vlaanderen is twintig jaar actief in Leuven en TRANSIT bestaat vijftien jaar. Ik vergelijk TRANSIT wel eens met een kraamkliniek. Componisten en musici zijn de ouders, het publiek is de samenleving, het festival de plek waar het nieuwe artistieke product in ideale omstandigheden op de wereld wordt gezet. De ouders en de maatschappij zijn verantwoordelijk voor de groei en bloei: een materniteit of een creatiefestival kan nu eenmaal niet alles doen. Dit jaar verwacht TRANSIT zeventien nieuwe telgen en voorziet ook opvang voor de allerkleinsten (lees: werken van maximaal tien jaar oud). Het Spectra ensemble brengt zowat het beste uit componerend Vlaanderen samen. Nordic Affect, Bozzini Quartet en Elision presenteren spannende muziek uit alle hoeken van de wereld. Ze exporteren de creaties van Thomas Smetryns, Frederik Neyrinck en Serge Verstockt nadien ook wereldwijd. ChampdAction gedijt volop in de TRANSIT biotoop met de tegendraadse muziek van de jongere generatie. En Mauro Pawlowski wilde al lang iets samen doen met Zwerm. Neue Vocalsolisten, ensemble mosaik en videokunstenares Anne Quirijnen plaatsen het slotakkoord van de feesteditie 2014 en daarna barst het feestje los. U komt toch meevieren? artistiek directeur Mark Delaere artistic director TIME TO CELEBRAT E! The Flanders Festival has now been active in Leuven for twenty years, and TRANSIT is going to be fifteen. I often compare TRANSIT to a maternity ward. The composers and performers are the parents, the audience is society, and the festival the ideal place to bring the new artistic being into the world. The parents and society are responsible for helping the new baby to grow and flourish, since a maternity ward, or a single festival, simply can’t do the job alone. This year, TRANSIT is expecting seventeen new scions and is providing a crèche for the youngest ones (read: works ten years old or younger). The Spectra ensemble will more or less bring the best of Flanders’ compositional talent together. Nordic Affect, Bozzini Quartet and Elision will present exciting music from all the corners of the world, and afterwards they’ll export the premieres by Thomas Smetryns, Frederik Neyrinck and Serge Verstockt worldwide. ChampdAction thrives in the TRANSIT biotope, with the younger generation’s against-the-grain music. And Mauro Pawlowski, who has long wanted to do something with Zwerm, will now get his chance. Op tournee krijgt Van Parys lovende kritieken in de Amerikaanse pers. Cardhu staat op het programma in Zagreb, Amsterdam en op de Biënnale van Venetië. Ook het magistrale Feuillage du Cœur van Serge Verstockt trekt de aandacht: klarinet en coloratuursopraan versmelten in een virtuoze symbiose. Maar geen openingsconcert zonder creaties van eigen bodem. Filip Rathé zorgt voor twee liederen op tekst van zijn favoriete Spaanse dichter Federico Garcia Lorca. Daan Janssens experimenteert met de cimbalom, een Hongaars volksmuziekinstrument. As much as TRANSIT is a look into the future, this opening concert is also an opportunity for retrospection. TRANSIT 2008: Spectra ensemble premiered Cardhu by Luc Brewaeys, New York New Music Ensemble premiered Fragrances by Annelies Van Parys. Van Parys toured America and was acclaimed by the US press. Cardhu is on the programme in Zagreb, Amsterdam and the Venice Biennale. In Serge Verstockt’s masterful Feuillage du Cœur (after Maurice Maeterlinck), clarinet and coloratura soprano melt together in a virtuoso symbiosis. Elise Caluwaerts will take on the challenging score this time around. And it wouldn’t be an opening concert without ‘home-grown’ new works too. Filip Rathé will provide two songs, set to texts by his favourite Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Daan Janssens will experiment with the cimbalom, a Hungarian hammered dulcimer. Frederik Neyrinck en Rozalie Hirs gooien alvast al hun talent in de strijd voor hun nieuwste creatie door het Canadese Bozzini Quartet. Van Marc Sabat staat Euler Lattice Spirals Scenery op het Bozzini programma. Hij verwijst naar Pythagoras en de hedendaagse componisten Claude Vivier en Ben Johnston in een half uur durend monumentaal, maar nooit hoogdravend strijkkwartet. Deze compositie, met een duidelijk wiskundige insteek laat door haar radicaliteit een verpletterende indruk na op elk publiek. U weze gewaarschuwd. This time, Frederik Neyrinck and Rozalie Hirs will have a turn, with their latest premieres, played by Canadian Bozzini Quartet. TRANSIT gaf een opdracht voor een totaalproductie. Ze denken samen na over de symbiose van hun creaties, de ruimtelijke opstelling, het gebruik van video en de verhouding tussen virtualiteit en realiteit. De in Nederland gevestigde Hugo Morales experimenteert met gitaar, viool, percussie, electronics en video. Maarten Buyl vertaalt zijn fascinatie voor de innerlijke beweging van klank en verschillende (psycho-)akoestische modellen naar partituren. Ann Eysermans is een geboren performer en componiste met een voorliefde voor grafische partituren en ‘out-of-the-box’ denken. Zo’n trio in combinatie met ChampdAction is gelijk aan vuurwerk op het podium. Hugo Morales, Maarten Buyl and Ann Eysermans are fascinated by new sounds, experimentation and multimedia performances. TRANSIT has commissioned a total production from them. They think and work together on the symbiosis of their creations, the spatial setup, the use of video and the relationship between virtuality and reality. Netherlands resident Hugo Morales experiments with guitar, violin, percussion, electronics, and video. Maarten Buyl translates his fascination for the inner motion of sound and the use of psychoacoustic models into his scores. Ann Eysermans is a born performer and composer with a predilection for graphic scores and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking. De Weense componist en DJ Jorge Sánchez-Chiong bedenkt een nieuw werk voor orkest, draaitafels en video in interactie met het Weense collectief TE-R. Het kersverse Leuvense Trio Serendip voegt een avontuurlijke toef slagroom toe op de verjaardagstaart. The project ensemble, composed of non-professional musicians, will add a festive touch to this year's TRANSIT birthday celebrations. The Viennese composer and DJ Jorge Sánchez-Chiong has created a new work for orchestra, turntables and video in interaction with the Viennese collective TE-R. Lim creëert in Ehwaz een bijzonder huwelijk tussen trompet en slagwerk, twee instrumenten die weinig met elkaar gemeen hebben. Net deze bijzondere bezetting aangevuld met electric lap-steel gitaar is de basis voor twee gloednieuwe composities. Serge Verstockt brengt ook geluidsbuttons van poppen in het spel. Zoals in zijn recente opera Hold Your Horses zoekt Verstockt naar een zinvolle interactie tussen componist, uitvoerders en publiek. Richard Barrett is helemaal vergroeid met Elision. Zijn intieme kennis van het ensemble en grenzeloos vertrouwen vormen de basis voor zijn verkenning van het fragiele grensgebied tussen compositie en improvisatie, tussen akoestische en elektronische klanken. Elision Ensemble, the new-music ensemble in Australia, will bring music from compatriot Liza Lim. In Ehwaz, Lim creates a special marriage between trumpet and percussion, two instruments with little in common. Serge Verstockt and Richard Barrett add an electric lap-steel guitar and electronics to form the basis for two brand-new compositions. Verstockt will also put the sound buttons of dolls into the mix. As he did in his recent opera Hold Your Horses, Verstockt searches for a meaningful interaction between composer, performers and audience. Over the years, Barrett has become completely fused with the Elision Ensemble. His intimate knowledge of the ensemble and boundless trust make up the basis for the exploration of the fragile boundary area between composition and improvisation, and between acoustic and electronic sounds. In Interzone boetseert Poppe een veelkleurig universum waarin muziek, tekst en video een merkwaardige symbiose vormen. De Belgische videokunstenares Anne Quirijnen creëerde de videoinstallatie met vier schermen, waarvoor ze inspiratie vond in de verknipte teksten uit het boek Interzone van William Burroughs. U krijgt een gefragmenteerde, urbane wereld te zien als een kruispunt van vele culturen. Zowel in de beelden als in de muziek volgen verschillende stijlen en atmosferen elkaar soms snel op of worden ze op een vervreemdende manier met elkaar gecombineerd. Zoals een grootstad is de muziek energiek, met nu en dan een pakkend verstild moment. De vocale partijen zijn extreem virtuoos en dragen bij tot een overrompelende totaalervaring. Enno Poppe will be the focus of the final concert celebrating the Flanders Festival’s 20th year in Leuven. In Interzone, Poppe moulds a multicoloured universe in which music, text and video form a remarkable symbiosis. Belgian video artist Anne Quirijnen created the four-screen video installation, inspired by the bizarre texts from William Burroughs’s book Interzone. You’ll see a fragmented, urban world as an intersection of many cultures. In both images and music, diverse styles and moods will sometimes follow each other in quick succession and sometimes appear in combination, resulting in an alienating effect. Like a big city, the music is energetic, with an occasional moment of stillness. The vocal parts are extremely virtuoso and help create a total experience that will take you by surprise.
