De opleiding Toegepaste Wiskunde, sinds 2002 gesplitst in bachelor Technische Wiskunde en Master Applied Mathematics, bestaat inmiddels 45 jaar en
dat willen we vieren met een gevarieerd symposium voor (oud)medewerkers,
studenten en alumni.

Vakantiecursus 2014 voor Wiskundeleraren
Datum/locatie: Eindhoven 22-23 augustus, TUE

Vakantiecursus Nieuwe Tijden. Voor leraren exacte vakken aan het havo, vwo
of hbo, voor leerlingen en voor andere belangstellenden organiseert het
Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN) in 2014 een vakantiecursus met als thema:
Nieuwe Tijden. De nieuwe examenprogramma’s voor wiskunde worden per 2015
ingevoerd op havo en vwo. Naast deze ‘nieuwe tijden’ in onderwijs zijn er
ook nieuwe tijden in wiskundig onderzoek, en de vakantiecursus van dit jaar
zal daarom ook om dit thema draaien. De focus zal liggen op onderwerpen
welke ook in de klas gebruikt kunnen worden. Big Data van de bonuskaart tot
gepersonaliseerde marketing, Logica in de rechtspraak, Meetkunde in de
architectuur, Analytische meetkunde in historisch perspectief en Priemtweelingen zijn de onderwerpen welke gepresenteerd zullen worden. Ook zal er
tijd zijn voor zelfwerkzaamheid; het afgelopen jaar is deze opnieuw geïntroduceerd in de vakantiecursus, en werd alom als zeer nuttig en fijn ervaren.
Dit jaar draait de zelfwerkzaamheid om het thema “Data Science”, ook wel “de
4e discipline” genoemd naast theorie, experiment en simulatie.
De cursus wordt gegeven in:

Eindhoven: op vrijdag 22 en zaterdag 23 augustus 2013 aan de TUE.
Amsterdam: op vrijdag 29 en zaterdag 30 augustus bij het CWI.

Summer School 'Analytic Convexity and Random Zeros'
Date/location: July 14-16 2014, Cologne, Germany
Organized by: The Cologne Graduate School "Global Structures in Geometry and
Analysis"
The purpose of the school is to introduce the participants to some fascinating facets of complex analysis. Analytic convexity is a cornerstone of complex analysis in several complex variables, and has strong ties to algebraic
topology, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry (through the theory of
Stein manifolds) and singularity theory. Distribution of zeros of random polynomials is a classical subject, pioneered by Pólya, Littlewood, Hammersley, Kac, Erdös, Turán. It is connected to holomorphic dynamics, pluripotential theory and number theory. Random polynomials provide a model for quantum chaos and the distribution of their zeros was intensively studied by
