De meeste Nederlanders kennen alleen het verhaal van

Momen[eel wordt gewerkt aan de oprichting van de
translating Dutch documents from the 17th century and
other times. which have survived the ravages of time
very well. Documents relating to the period have also
been found in The Netherlands. Interest in that history is
very great in the United States.
New Netherland Gompanions
and the New
Netherland Foundation.
Lack of familiarity leads to lack of appreciation. The
New Netherland Companions want to do somthing
about that. The New Netherland Companions is an
informal, friendly collaboration of people who bear a
warm heart towards New Netherland and are strongly
interested, personally and/or professionally, in the
Hudson, Robert Fulton and Samuel de Champlain.
Hudson, the Englishman sailing the river to the north in
the name of the Dutch East lndia Company. Fulton, the
American who in 18O7was the first to sail the Hudson
river from New York to Albany with a steamship on a
commercial basis. And Champlain, the Frenchman who
discovered the lake in the area of New Netherland that
got his name. lt's going to be a real American and
European festivity, in which it must not be forgotten that
The Netherlands represent many nations, because even
in that time, The Netherlands were a country that took
in many refugees, and many of them - Walloons,
Flemings, Germans, Danes, Swedes, etc., travelled to
distant regions via The Netherlands.

The Companions share a common interest and agree
to strive for the common goal of promoting and
supporting activities related to New Netherland. At the
moment, the New Netherland Foundation is being set
up; it will function as a bridge between all people,
foundations, and committees in the United States who
are involved in the celebration in 2OO9of Henry
Hudson's voyage to New Netherland 4OOyears earlier.
Additionallythe Foundation has the goal of building a
new replica of the "Half Moon", the ship with which
Henry Hudson completed his voyage. The replica, that
has to replace the existing replica. is intended to repeat
Hudson's voyage, after which the ship lvilflbe donated
to the New Netherland Foundation in the U.S.A.
Other ideas now being considered are the prese-.'ar:or^
of the so-called Dutch Bams in the former Nel"r
Netherland area, - old barns and houses in the HudsoValley; and constructing a 17th-century Dutch Village.

American Heritage Day on both sides of the ocean. But
also at historic moments, such as in 19O9 and 1959, the
discovery of the territory of New Netherland has been
celebrated. In 19O9,The Netherlands donated a replica
of the "Half Moon" and in 1959 our then Princess
Beatrix made a lengthy, festive visit to New Netherland
in the context of various festivities. In 2OO9it will be time
again. Then Henry Hudson's discovery of the area of
New Netherland will have been 4OOyears ago. 2009 is
still years ahead, but, nonetheless, if we want to
celebrate that jubilee well, with activities like the
examoles mentioned above. we need to come into
action gradually. lt's not just about the festivitiesin the
United States, which will be celebrated there in a big
way, but it also concerns our relation and connection
with the United States as that ought to be commemorated in The Netherlands.The celebrations will have a
European character, because they will be connected

This Dutch Barn Ín Selkirk. Aibany. New york. was about to collapse and
be
demolished for a housing project. Because of intervention by Hubert de
Leeuw, the barn is now being dismantled and moved to an estate several
miles further.

Een'Dutch Barn'bevat elementen uit de Nederiandse
schurenbouw die later ztln toegepast in Nieuw
Nederland. Heden ten dage s[aan er nog enkele
honderden in het gebied van de Hudson rivier in de

New Netherland Museum
The Netherlands really ought to have a New Netherland
Museum, in which all the information and objects
related to that history can be found.
This museum could probably be established at a wharf
where the replica of the "Half Moon" could be
constructed. The most appropriate place to establish
this would naturally be Lelystad, by the Batavia Wharf.
Then the history of the East India Company and the
West India Company would be combined. Aspects of
slavery and relations with the Indians of North America
during the Dutch period would have to be covered. This
is about education; and history is there for us to
c o n t i n u et o l e a r n . .
To establish the New Netherland Museum in a "Dutch
Barn" is a vital idea in the U.S. A "Dutch Barn" contains
elements of Netherlandish barn construction that were
applied later in New Netherland. Several hundred of
them still stand in the Hudson River area of the State of
Niêw York.
