The mission of the WIP FIPP Board of Examination (BOE) is to protect and inform the public
by improving the quality and availability of interventional techniques in pain medicine. The BOE
certifies qualified physicians who voluntarily appear for examination and meet the goals for
certification as Fellows of Interventional Pain Practice. Since 2001, 825 physicians representing 51
countries have been certified FIPP. The objectives of the certification program are to establish the
knowledge and skills domain of the practice of pain medicine; assess the knowledge and application

of interventional techniques of pain medicine physicians in a psychometrically valid manner;
encourage professional growth in the practice of interventional techniques; formally recognize
individuals who meet the requirements set forth by the WIP FIPP Board of Examination; and serve
the public by encouraging quality patient care in the practice of pain medicine.
WIP is an international, nonprofit organization founded in 1993 that brings together renowned
experts in the field of pain medicine for the advancement and standardization of interventional pain
practice. WIP achieves its purposes and objectives through organizing physician-oriented educational
symposia, practical workshops, and World Congresses; certifying physicians as Fellow of
Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP); publishing the scholarly journal, Pain Practice; and establishing
liaisons with physicians and industry to promote the specialty of pain medicine.
