Conditions - New Material Award

Rules and Regulations
New Material Award 2014
Rule 1 General
The New Material Award, a collaboration between the DOEN Foundation, Het Nieuwe Instituut and the
Materiaalfonds voor Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving (hereinafter referred to as the Organization),
consists of a prize of € 15,000 for an end product, and a fellowship at Het Nieuwe Instituut for a
detailed idea that does not have to have been carried out and to which a research question is linked.
The award is open to artists, designers, fashion designers and architects working in Netherlands and
for students of Dutch art, fashion, design and architecture schools.
75% of the prize money of € 15,000 is to be spent on a continuation of the design with which the award
was won. A report hereof shall be provided by the winner within 12 months after 20 November 2014.
The New Material Fellow is rewarded by the jury on the basis of a research proposal and the winner
will be able to carry out (continued) research into material innovation thanks to the prize money of the
DOEN Foundation (at € 5,000) and the network and platform provided by Het Nieuwe Instituut. The
Fellow will perform his or her research independently and will share the (interim) results through the
various communication channels of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
The New Material Fellow’s research falls within the context of Het Nieuwe Instituut’s ‘Things and
Materials’ programme line. This programme will not only lead to classic topics such as the renewed
attention for handicraft and the revaluation of the object. Another topic of discussion will be the
current crossovers between nature, science and creativity, based on gene technology and motivated
by the current democratization of science, among other things. An interesting and important area of
research is characterized by the new relationship between biology and design.
Het Nieuwe Instituut will support the Fellow’s research for a period of up to six months, by allowing
use of its network and providing a platform. For this period, the New Material Fellow is committed
to carrying out his or her research within the context of the programme of Het Nieuwe Instituut. The
exact conditions of facilitation in the form of providing network and platform will be determined after
an interview that will take place after the award ceremony and before the end of the year in which the
award is presented.
