Finnish Language and Culture studies • Finnish language and culture is taught at more than 100 universities in about 30 countries around the world. • CIMO’s Unit for the Finnish Language and Culture supports Finnish language and culture studies at universities outside Finland. Our support is available to universities, their teachers and students. • As an expert body acts Council for Finnish Studies at Universities abroad (abr. UKAN) UKAN has been supporting Finnish language studies outside Finland for 43 years. Finnish Language and Culture Support for universities outside Finland CIMO • supports Finnish Language and Culture studies at universities outside Finland by providing professional and material support: – sends native Finnish teachers – provides universities with Finnish literature, study materials and periodicals Finnish Language and Culture Support for universities outside Finland FLTA program 1/2 • in co-operation with Fulbright Center CIMO sends Finnish Language and Culture Teaching Assistants (FLTA) to 4-5 different universities in the United States yearly • The purpose of the FLTA program is to diversify the teaching of Finnish Language and Culture in the United States, to further strengthen the academic status of Finnish Studies at North-American universities, and to intensify the cooperation between Finnish and American scholars and universities. Finnish Language and Culture Support for universities outside Finland FLTA program 2/2 • The FLTAs study and/or pursue research at an American university while at the same time serve as Finnish language and culture teaching assistants on campus. • Program is funded by CIMO and the Fulbright Center • Program is administered by the Fulbright Center • 2011 - 2012 FLTAs are at the University of Seattle, Bloomington, Madison and UC Berkeley. Fulbright Center • The Fulbright Center http://www.fulbright.fi is a service organization that specializes in cultural exchange between Finland and North America. The services include grant programs for Finns and Americans, and advising and information services. Inquiries regarding the FLTA program as well as Fulbright grants for American students and scholars: [email protected] Finnish Language and Culture, CIMO’s support for students • summer courses in Finnish language and culture in Finland (held by Finnish universities) • courses in literary translation (Finnish Literature Information Centre FILI and CIMO) • Suomea Suomessa training program (in cooperation with Finnish employers or families) • scholarships for students and researchers to study at Finnish universities International summer courses • intended for students of Finnish at universities outside Finland • for advanced students • courses of four different levels • In 2012 held in Jyväskylä, Savonlinna,Tampere, Vaasa, Oulu • 330 applicants out of which 181 get accepted Finnish in Finland (Suomea Suomessa) • Training program for international university students • A trainee might work in customer service, as a summer camp director, teacher, translator, or perhaps an assistant on different kinds of projects. • The training period varies from 1 to 6 months • Mainly during summer months (June – August) • Trainees are paid either by the employer or through a CIMO grant. • 25 trainees took part in the program in 2011 - 2012 Family Placements (Finnish in Finland) • for students whose Finnish language skills are not yet adequate to the challenges of a work environment • Trainees are expected to share the family's daily tasks, such as looking after children and doing light house work. • The working time is maximum 5 hours a day or 25 hours a week • Room and board are provided by the host family. In addition to free room and board, the trainee will receive 40–70€ in pocket money per week during the training period. Scholarships for Advanced Studies of the Finnish Language at Finnish Universities • CIMO offers scholarships for MA degree students of Finnish language and literature at universities outside Finland. • Preference is given to applicants who are working on their Master's thesis. • The maximum period for which the scholarship can be applied for is one academic term, while the minimum scholarship period is 3 months. • The monthly allowance is 800 euros. No additional allowance for housing is paid. The scholarship holder is also responsible for expenses due to international travel to and from Finland. • http://www.studyinfinland.fi Scholarships for Post-Master's Studies and Research at Finnish Universities • Scholarships for post-Master's studies and research at Finnish universities are available for international postgraduate students and researchers of Finnish language and culture. • The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 1200 euros. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Travel expenses are not covered by CIMO. Short-term Scholarships for Post-graduates and Researchers of Finnish language and culture • CIMO awards (tentatively for one year) scholarships to foreign post-graduates and researchers of the Finnish language and culture for short-term visits, e. g. to archives, seminars, interviews or meetings with a tutor. • Attendance at a conference is no sufficient reason for a scholarship - the visit should also include other kind of work related to the applicant's research. • The grant can be awarded for 1-4 weeks. They are targeted at all academic fields, with the exception of the scholarships for advanced-level degree students of the Finnish language, which are specific to that particular field. • Note: CIMO does not have any scholarship programs or other financial assistance available for Bachelor’s or Master’s level degree studies in Finland.
