Message to Visitors to Hakone
- regarding Volcanic Activity at Mt. Hakone Announcement Documentation Dated May 4th, 2015 at Hakone Town Press Conference
Since April 26th, 2015, the level of volcanic activity at Mt. Hakone has increased slightly
compared with usual. This kind of phenomena was observed several times in the past and
rather large scale earthquake swarms occurred in 2001, 2006, 2008-2009, 2011 and 2013,
and fortunately none of them developed into big disaster such as eruption.
We were informed that the volcanic activity would not immediately lead to an eruption;
however since we had received the information from the Japan Meteorological Agency that
there could be a possible small eruption, we have closed part of hiking trails in Owakudani
and nearby areas after we had discussed disaster measures with the members of Hakone
Town and Hakone Volcano Disaster Prevention Council.
The measures we have taken are to limit access only to a designated area close to the
point where steam is gushing from the ground at Owakudani volcanic valley, taking utmost
precaution for the safety of townsmen and tourists, based on the evacuation guidance
manual we have created in case of eruption at Mt. Hakone by learning a lesson from the
accident that occurred at Mt. Ontake; please note that this does not limit access to other
areas in Hakone. We hope that tourists enjoy sightseeing in Hakone while paying attention
to the information from the town and agencies concerned.

箱根を訪れる方々に対するメッセージ
～箱根山の活動に関して～
箱根町記者発表資料(平成27年5月4日)
箱根山では４月２６日から、やや活発な火山活動が観測されています。こうし
た現象は、箱根山ではこれまでにも何度か観測されており、2000年以降、2001
年、2006年、2008-2009年、2011年、2013年にも、やや規模の大きな群発地震活
動として観測されていますが、幸いにも、いずれの場合も噴火等の大きな災害
に発展したことはありません。今回の活動も、ただちに噴火につながるもので
はないと聞いていますが、大涌谷付近で規模の小さな噴出現象が突発的に発生
する可能性があるという気象庁の解説情報を受け、箱根町と箱根火山防災協議
会メンバー（気象庁、横浜地方気象台、神奈川県温泉地学研究所、県災害対策
課、県自然環境保全センター）により今後の防災対策について協議を行い、大
涌谷自然研究路及び大涌谷周辺のハイキングコースの一部を閉鎖しました。今
回の措置は、御嶽山の災害を教訓に、箱根山の噴火を想定して作成した避難誘
導マニュアルに沿って、住民や観光客の皆さんの安全を最優先に考え、大涌谷
の噴煙地に近い場所のごく一部への立ち入りを規制するためのもので、箱根の
他の地域まで規制が及ぶものではありません。観光客の皆さんにおかれまして
は、町や関係機関からの関連情報に十分留意していただきながら、箱根観光を
満喫していただきたいと思います。
