Friendship agreement with Hakone, Genuine hospitality in Japan;
A Special Memorable Event that Took Place in Hakone
In November 2014, a delegation from St. Moritz in Switzerland signed a friendship
agreement with Hakone Town, a popular hot spring resort in Japan. The following is a
travelogue of the delegate members.

Trip to Japan
The initiative for a friendship agreement between St. Moritz and Hakone Town was taken
by the mayor of Hakone Town, which idea was developed from 20 years of the partnership
between the Hakone Tozan Railway and the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). On November 2, 2014,
St. Moritz and Hakone Town signed the friendship agreement in Hakone and we also
attended the ceremony for the introduction of a new train named Allegra by the Hakone
Tozan Railway. Since the mayor Sigi Asprion and the council president could not participate
in for some official reasons, I represented the delegate as a council vice-president, together
with Martin Berthod, CEO of St. Moritz Tourism Department, and we made the trip to Japan.
Six members from RhB joined the delegation and Stefan Engler as the president of RhB was

It was my first trip to Japan. For many years as a St. Moritz guide, I took care of numerous
Japanese guests and TV crews and maintained active contacts with Switzerland tourism
organization in Tokyo. Hakone is the recreation area of Tokyo associated with buses and
trains run by the Hakone Tozan Railway Company. Over 10 million passengers are
transported annually, who may possibly visit St. Moritz and the region.
Warm welcome
Throughout our trip, we were always surprised by the Japanese hospitality. At railway and
cable car stations, there were posters and photos of St. Moritz, the Bernina line and Glacier
Express, and the Engadine mountains. Adults and children waved at us with Swiss flag.
We were all warmly welcomed - almost as heads of state or movie stars. The Japanese are
kind and warm-hearted!
Thriving Resort
The Hakone region has much in common with St. Moritz, beautiful landscapes and lakes,
and a good tourist infrastructure. The tourism is thriving and the spa tourism (onsen) is living
and well taken care of. The Japanese during holidays or weekends let themselves go in the
warm water – from six o’clock in the morning until after the midnight!
The hosts showed us the whole region. We visited gardens, parks and shrines and took ride
on a cable car to the hot springs and on a pirate ship on Lake Ashi - a good weather with the
best view of Mount Fuji! We attended a tea ceremony in kimono dress. Also there was a
plenty of delicious Japanese food; even being a vegetarian myself, the hosts satisfied me
with extra dishes!

To my surprise at the official opening ceremony of the new train, the stationmaster came up
to me and said, “Susi-san, you were our guide in St. Moritz.” Later we met other people who
already knew me as St. Moritz Guide. What a small world it is! In the evening, various
events were held in honor of RhB and St. Moritz. Gifts were exchanged and we presented
Hakone with our flag and “St. Moritz Sun”.

In the afternoon on the last day, a large parade (a Daimyo’s procession) was held in
Hakone, comparable to the Sechseläutenplatz. We wanted to join in, of-course. All
participants were in traditional costumes, so were we! We were samurai and the attraction of
the event. The audience applauded and called us “St. Moritz, St. Moritz” and shook hands
and took photos with us!
RhB is planning to invite a delegation from Hakone in 2016 to introduce a new train in
Schweizeinzuladen! It would be a nice occasion to introduce the new station to you all.
Hakone accepts the friendship agreement with St. Moritz very seriously and I am honored
and would like to maintain the contact representing the community.
My concluding remarks: The Region Hakone was already filled with visitors in early
November. Autumn is a season of colors, nature, and the hot springs. We could do more on
the healthy tourism and the spa tradition. In St. Moritz, this began 3,500 years ago!
箱根町との友好都市提携
日本に生きるおもてなし
2014 年 11 月にサン・モリッツの代表者が日本の箱根との友好都市提携に署名
した。以下にその旅行記を記す。

友好都市提携は箱根町長のアイディアだった。このアイディアは箱根登山鉄
道とレーティッシュ鉄道との間に 20 年間のパートナーシップがあることから生
まれたものである。昨年 11 月 2 日、箱根で「アレグラ」という新車両の発表と
友好都市提携が行われた。
シギ・アスプリオン町長と議長が多忙により出席できなかったため、幸運に
も副議長の職にある私が、サン・モリッツ観光局長のマーティン・ベルトと共
にこの訪問に参加することとなった。この訪問には、レーティッシュ鉄道から
も 6 人が参加し、その中にはステファン・エングラー社長の姿もあった。
日本への旅行は初めてだが、私はサン・モリッツで数年間ガイドをしている
ので、たくさんの日本人観光客、テレビ取材チーム、東京にあるスイス政府観
光局とつながりがある。
箱根は東京の人々が安らぎを求めてやってくる場所だ。ここでは電車やバス
はすべて箱根登山鉄道が運営しているため利便性が高い。乗客は毎年 1000 万人
以上にもなる。
心からの歓迎
旅行中、日本のおもてなしにはいつも驚かされた。登山鉄道の駅には、サン・
モリッツ、ベルニナ線とグレッシャー・エクスプレス、エンガディナ山脈のポ
スターと写真パネルが展示されていた。大人や子どもがスイス国旗を振って迎
えてくれた。私たちは、まるで大統領か映画スターのような歓迎を受けた。日
本人の中には親切な心が生きている。
賑やかな観光地
箱根とサン・モリッツには多くの共通点がある：美しい景色、美しい湖、優
れた観光施設などである。箱根の観光は伸びている。中でも温泉観光が根付き、
洗練されている。日本人は休暇や週末に箱根を訪れ、朝 6 時から真夜中まで暖
かい湯につかって疲れを癒す。
私たちのホスト（招待主）が、箱根を案内してくれた。庭園や公園、神社を
見学し、登山電車で源泉（大涌谷）へ行き、芦ノ湖では海賊船に乗った。天候
に恵まれ、素晴らしい富士山の眺望を楽しむこともできた。また、茶道体験や、
着物も着させてもらった。美味しい和食も頂き、私はベジタリアンなのに、ホ
スト（招待主）は私を大変丁寧にもてなしてくれた。
また、大変驚かされた出来事があった。アレグラ号出発式の日、駅長が私に
近づいてきて、こう言ったのだ。
「スージーさん！サン・モリッツであなたが私
をガイドしてくれたんですよ！」そのあとも何人か、私をサン・モリッツのガ
イドとして知っている方に声をかけられた。世界は狭いものである。
その晩、レーティッシュ鉄道とサン・モリッツのために、さまざまな催しが
行われ、多くのプレゼント交換をした。ある晩には、私たちは箱根にサン・モ
リッツの旗と「サン・モリッツの太陽」を贈呈した。
大名行列とサン・モリッツの侍
最終日の午後に箱根大名行列が行われた。箱根の大名行列はスイスのセクセ
ロイテン行進のようだったので、私たちも絶対に参加したかった。参加者は伝
統的な衣装を身に着けた―私たちも。私たちは侍の衣装を身に着け観衆の興味
を引き付けた。観衆は手を叩いて、
「サン・モリッツ！サン・モリッツ！」と叫
び、私たちに握手を求め、写真を撮った。
レーティッシュ鉄道は 2016 年、スイスで新しい車両を発表する際に箱根の代
表者を招待するつもりだ。箱根の人たちに新しい駅を紹介すれば喜んでくれる
だろう。箱根町はこの友好都市提携をとても大事にしている。私も、このつな
がりを維持していくこと-を嬉しく思う。
観光地である箱根は 11 月の初旬にはすでに観光客でいっぱいだった。箱根の
秋は色彩の季節であり、自然の季節、温泉の季節であり、観光のトップシーズ
ンである。私たちもヘルスツーリズムと温泉の伝統をより大切にしていきたい。
サン・モリッツはこれらを既に 3500 年前から始めていたのだから。
